Recap of places and players:

Me and DH for impromptu anniversary trip, didn't bring kids...

We stayed at OKW on 2/14 and 2/15,
then AKL concierge on 2/16 for our anniversary,
then back to OKW for 2/17 and 2/18
(it was a little jumping around, but we couldn't get 2/16 at OKW, but I was GLAD because AKL was GREAT!)

I will use my standard rating scale:

10- everything perfect...food, service, atmosphere (very rare)
9- excellent, almost perfect
7-8- very good, overall great experience
5-6- mediocre, might not return
3-4- bad, not returning
1-2- should close this place down!!!

2/16/03-
Checked out of OKW and made it to early opening at MK. Rode space mountain approx. 3x plus Big Thunder, Dumbo, and TTA. Early Entry is totally worth it. By 11:00am the place was packed.

2/15 brunch, Main Street Bakery:

Wanted to eat at Plaza Restaurant, but we didn't feel like waiting for them to open (I think it was 10am and they open at 11am). We grabbed a bite at Main Street Bakery. The line was very long but there are menus along the queque. We both decided on the mini quiche, but after a LONG wait found out they didn't have any more!!! We really didn't want pastry so we got a sandwich, DH a veggie wrap with portabella and hummus and I had ham and cheese bagette. Both were fresh and good. Also had coffee, just ok.

Overall rating 6: everything was fine, but nothing special IMO. We've also had pastry here and to tell the truth I don't think it's nearly as good as BoardWalk Bakery.

2/15 pm snack and dinner appetizer, Concierge Lounge AKL:

Checked into AKL around 1:30pm and got our room right away. DH had surprised me by upgrading us to concierge. The CM, Jesus, who helped us was so gracious and friendly!!!! We LOVED the lodge, and are excited to come back with the kids in July...they will love it too.

We arrived at "snack" time in the lounge. They had assorted nuts and seeds out along with cinnamon/sugar pita chips, whole fruit, fruit smoothie (called African smooth with mango and yogurt...YUM), iced tea and lemonade. They also had an incredible coffee-capuccino-latte-espresso machine. We had a quick bite and then enjoyed our view of the savannah...ahhhhh. We decided NOT to go to any of the parks that night. We wanted to make the most of our stay. Before our dinner at Jiko, we went to the lounge to have an appetizer. They had such wonderful choices. I am only giving a partial list as I didn't write it all down. What I remember is hummus with pita chips, spicey fall-off-the-bone ribs, bourbon chicken skewers, grilled shrimp skewers, black-eyed pea salad, PB & J sandwiches and chicken nuggets with various mustards. YUM!

Overall rating of Concierge at AKL: 9, the coffee machine is a 10!! This includes dessert and then breakfast which I will review shortly. Can't wait for the kids to experience this.

2/16, dinner, Jiko and our anniversary!!!!

I think our waitress was disappointed we didn't order appetizers or anything...but we had a lot at the lounge...
I ordered the chermoula chicken with mashed potatoes which was very nicely spiced and juicy. DH had the braised lamb shank which he said was good but like the couscous almost better!! For dessert we split a chocolate sampler that was very nice, it had white chocolate mousse, chocolate creme brulee, and chocolate purses with honey dipping sauce (my favorite of the three). They also gave us an anniversary card and the staff signed it in different languages, signed their name and country they were from. VERY NICE!!

Overall rating: 8, very good, would like to try some appetizers next time, but with such good food in the lounge it was hard!!

DH and I explored the Lodge like a couple of kids, and went back up to the lounge to see what they had to offer (like we were starving or something!!!). They had a variety of desserts including the famous zebra domes, mini lemon tarts; white, milk, and dark chocolate truffles (full of booze!!); sugar, chocolate chip, and oatmeal cookies, and about a dozen kinds of after dinner drinks (I had two servings of frangelico, yum).:p

2/17/03 For breakfast, along with a frothy latte, I had yogurt and granola and fresh fruit (melon, pineapple, and strawberries). There was also bagels, donuts and pastries, hot oatmeal with cinamon, cereal and juice. I read the paper they left outside our door and watched the weather report, feeling ALMOST sorry for my friends and family back in CT.

Stay tuned...next report will be Flame Tree BBQ and Artist Point!!!

Sounds like Jiko's went well--but a "disappointed" waitress can spoil an otherwise great dinner. They must know by now that many folks don't order an appetizer, or drinks.
Anyway, the card was a nice touch!!
Look forwrd to AP review..

What a great post. Thank you so much for the wonderful information. We are going to stay there in December so I shared your information with my family. Sounded like you had a ball!

Enjoyed your reviews. Anyone noticing a trend with service at Jiko?

Thanks for the reviews!

I, too, notice a trend with the sevice at Jiko. I had a delicious dinner there, but a lousy waitress, in December. I have read quite a few negative reviews about the service at Jiko as well. (Do you think we all had the same waitress? ;) ) I think some changes need to be made!

It wasn't that she was bad, just nothing special...I've had better service at Citricos and Calif. Grille and this trip at Artist Point which I'll review soon.

We thought AKL was just wonderful too! Glad you had a nice time exploring. Thanks for your reviews.
