This is the third trip for DH & I and the first trip for my parents & brother

8/5 – MGM

DH & I managed to wake up at 7am and enjoy a peaceful breakfast on the balcony, watching the animals and talking about which rides we were excited to go on. The plan was to be at the bus stop around 8am so we were at MGM by 9am for the rope drop. The phone rang at 7:30am. It was my Dad – he couldn’t get my brother out of bed because he was too tired. I told my Dad we were going without him and he could catch up with us later. But of course, my parents were not ready on time and we didn’t get to the bus stop until around 8:45am. We were at the bus stop about 5 minutes before it happened. My Dad starts, “It’s so hot. You walk out the door and start sweating.” He turns and looks at me and says “This is ridiculous” . Inwardly I want to scream, but I say, very calmly, “Dad, it’s August and you are in FL. I told you it would be hot and humid. Deal with it.”
To which I got a muttered “I need a bottle of water.” A bus finally showed up around 9:00am. Of course now I’m upset. I’m calculating in my head how long the lines for ToT and RnR will be by the time we get in the park. DH is practically ready to explode, he’s tapping his foot and fidgeting. He’s now had to sit and wait an extra hour and if it were up to him, we would get off the bus and race to ToT. However my parents still haven’t put on sunscreen. Dad has already downed his first bottle of water and is looking for another. We finally get to the ticket machines. DH & I wiz through. I look back. They have NO idea where they put their tickets. After I said on the bus “Get your ticket out.” A 10 minute search of all pockets, backpacks, wallets and camera cases ensues. Finally both tickets are located and we are into the park. I didn’t think anything could get worse than the “It’s Hot” conversation, but it happened.

Mom: Look the street, it’s neat
Dad: Yeah, neat
Mom: That’s a big hat
Dad: Why is there a big hat?
Mom: I don’t know but it looks neat
Dad: Oh look, we are walking on a fake street
Mom: This is so neat

This went on all the way down to ToT/RnR. ToT had a 20 minute wait so we headed up there. My Dad was sort of shaken up after ride and didn’t like how many drops we had. We decided to head on over to RnR and wait in the 25 minute line. The line went relatively quick and we got on in about 15 minutes. After the ride we went to check our photos. I about fell on the floor laughing. My Dad had crossed his arms, mummy style, over the shoulder restraints. “Dad, WHAT are you doing?” I asked. He claims the restraints didn’t feel tight enough so he clamped his arms over the restraints until it clicked again at which point he says he felt like he couldn’t breathe.

After wandering through the gift shop a bathroom break was ordered. This would become a common theme through the rest of the week. My Dad would spend every walking minute drinking from his Brita bottle or a PowerAde, and then need a rest room. We spent more time taking rest room breaks than a family with little kids.

We headed over to the Great Movie Ride that had a deceiving line. I didn’t remember it snaking around so much inside – it was about a 30 minute wait before we got on. I thought my mom would really love this ride – all the old movie scenes, etc. I looked over about 5 minutes after the ride started. She was out cold and slept through the entire ride! We exited and as we waited for my Dad to get back from the rest room my mother decided that it was just too hot for her and it was making her sleepy so she was going back to the hotel to take a nap. So, for those keeping count, now my mom and my brother are sleeping away day two of WDW. DH, my Dad and I got a quick bite to eat at the ABC Commissary, then headed over to get a FP for the 1:30 Indiana Jones. While waiting we hit Muppet 3D, Star Tours and checked out the NY street set. By then it was time for our FP for Indy. We got good seats and DH decided to tape the show. About 15 minutes in I lean over to ask Dad if he likes it. Dad has been waiting to see Indiana Jones. He’s been talking about Indiana Jones since we planned the trip. Dad is asleep. I poke him – “Dad you are sleeping!” “No I’m not, I’m not, and this part is just boring I’m resting my eyes.” He replies. He snoozed on and off through the rest of the show then proclaimed “That was great, I’m glad I got to see that” as he zoomed off to the bathroom.

DH wanders off to get a frozen banana as Dad reappears. “Well, I’m beat, it’s hot and I’m going back to the hotel for a nap.” He tells me. He takes off, ignoring my warnings that we have a 4:20 AR for Brown Derby and that he really doesn’t have that much time since it’s around 2:20pm.

DH and I managed to hit One Mans Dream walk through, then the Backlot Tour. While in line for the tram, it started pouring, thundering and lighting. This was the straw that broke the camels back for me. I had spent hours planning everything and was completely upset that my family was more interested in sleeping and whining about the heat than enjoying WDW. Now it was storming and threatening to cancel Fantasmic, my favorite show. I’m standing outside the Backlot Tour in tears and can’t even really explain to DH why! I don’t think he knew what to do with me.

We put our ponchos on and just sort of wandered around for a bit. I texted my Dad to ask if they were up and moving toward getting on a bus back to MGM for dinner since it was getting close to 4:00pm. I got a message back saying they were on their way, which I took to mean that they were already on a bus to MGM. DH & I went to check in at the Brown Derby and were told there was a bit of a wait, but ended up getting seated pretty fast and told the waitress we were waiting for three more and that they were on their way. After sitting for close to 20 minutes and getting more upset and hungry I texted them again “WHERE ARE YOU”. I got back “Heading to the bus stop now”. Heading to the bus stop now? I almost screamed in the middle of Brown Derby. It could take them another 45 minutes to get here depending on the buses! We informed the waitress of the situation and she suggested that we go ahead and order and we did. We both got the filet mignon and it was fantastic. When we were almost done with entrée, they all showed up. Dinner took over two hours by the time everyone was done. However, they were all in a good mood because it was raining and not as humid and sunny.

By this time it was 7pm. Not much time to do anything since I wanted to head for Fantasmic at 8pm. We decided to look around in the shops. Now this was something my family could handle – shopping in the AC. We dawdled around for the next hour, and then headed over to the reserved seating entrance. We got DH & I’s favorite seats – the bench right in front that is separated from the rest of the bleachers. By this time the thundering and lighting had stopped. It was barely drizzling and I was confident that the show would go on. I was content to just sit and relax. Brother wasn’t. He was hungry. Event though he had just eaten an appetizer, entrée and dessert at Brown Derby. He went off in search of food. Dad went to the restroom. At this point the cast member selling light up stuff decided to park herself right next to me. We had a steady stream of parents and kids banging into us right up until showtime. Andy showed back up with cotton candy, drinks and I think a hot dog. The guy is a bottomless pit, I swear. Fantasmic was great and everyone really seemed to enjoy it. Andy still hadn’t been on RnR so we decided to try and get out of the theater and get in line before leaving the park. We headed over and zoomed through line and preshow in about 15 minutes. We were next to ride and RnR broke down! Since it was close to park closing they just cleared everyone out.

We headed to the bus stop and lucked out with a bus waiting to go back to AKL. We made plans to leave at 8am for MK the next morning and said goodnight. As we were heading into our separate rooms I heard my mom say “I hope it’s not hot tomorrow.”

Next: 8/6 – Magic Kingdom

nice reports so far
cant wait to read more
godbless you and your dh patience i would have killed my paretns i have no patience

I'm amazed you didn't text back something non disney...still sounds like you are getting some unexcepted time with DH which can't be bad

I have no patience either - it was all DH. He just kept telling me not to get upset, that it was THEM missing vacation not us. It helped, but believe me, there were a few times I almost exploded. And offwego, it was nice to spend time along w/ DH and move at our pace.

I am enjoying your reports so far -- however - I think I should print out a copy of them (at least day 1 and 2) and hang on to it for reference if I ever decide to bring my family with me and my husband to WDW -- while the thought has crossed my mind - your trip reports remind me that it would probably be a terrible idea (my parents and inlaws) sound just like your parents!!

Hope YOU had a good trip though despite them!!

Great report - looking forward to more.

laughing myself silly here reading your report. :rotfl2: So sorry that it doesn't seem to be working out to be the vacation you dreamed of but you and dh seem to have had some quality time together.

Can't wait for the remainder of the trip.

Arg! I know the frustration you must have been feeling...I'm practically feeling it myself and it has nothing to do with me!! Can't wait for the next part!

OHMIGOD is this so true. I will never invite my in-laws again! I made the mistake a year ago and got lots of,"my knees are bothering me, I need to sit down." and "I don't remember it being so hot here." I rolled my eyes at DH so much I thought I'd get dizzy!

I am enjoying your report, but you have me a little worried. Our next trip will include my Mom and my In-Laws. We are going in Feb. so I don't think I have to worry about it being too hot! DH and I have decided to rent our Mom's ECV's so we don't have to worry about wearing them out with all the walking. The FIL will do ANYTHING just to be with his son. (It sounds nice but it is a little annoying at times!) ::yes:: So we don't expect him to be a problem...

Keep the days coming, I'm anxious to see how it ends.

Your TR is hilarious !!!! I travel "light" now with only one or two of my daughters who can keep up with me.........

Jo Ann

You are a godsend with your parents. I, on the other hand, would not be quite so patient. Which is why I just go with DH!

I went on a girls' trip with my mom and sister. I swear, between the two of them (ages 34 and 54 at the time), we were making more bathroom breaks than seeing attractions. It got pretty frustrating, but what can you say? They gotta go.

I am REALLY enjoying your reports. Most amusing. :teeth:

OK, the image you created of your dad on RNRC is too much! I busted out laughing!

Aren't DH's wonderful when it comes to calming hysterical daughters down when thier parents bring out the worst? Been there, done than, NOT going back!

I'm glad Fantasmic wasn't cancelled on you! Keep the reports coming!

Great trip report!! I'm looking forward to the next part......betting that you don't get out of the hotel until 9am again.....and that it will be hot.. :)

Great report! You definately have some patience. I would have flipped at my family by this point. Keep the reports coming!

My DH is always suggesting we go to WDW with various family members and something exactly like your first two days reports are what always play through my mind before I have to say NO WAY!
