Who said, "Ahh...I love the smell of napalm in the morning...."?? Wait, that's not a formal question for the thread cuz it doesn't have to do with WDW.
It's so wonderful to see everyone discussing what ails the PG Thread, although I had hoped to see some more name-calling and personal attacks. I mean, c'mon, not one of you said anything about the other's mother!
I do have to hand it to Madonna for being the first to vocalize what some of us have been feeling lately. And kudos to everyone else for voicing their opinion as well. Everyone had valid points to make. And while some of the points have been argued heatedly, everyone should understand that this is NOT necessarily directed at anyone specifically, so no one should go away thinking, "Gee, I screwed up the longest lasting thread on the DIS, everyone hates me." or "What a bunch of snobs, I'm only trying to have fun and be a part of the kewlest people on this board" (the latter remark being so true, of course) or "Who the H-E-double hockey sticks do they think they are trying to tell me what to do! I've been around just as long!" I think it's being directed at the thread itself...at how it's evolved. Dave was right, it is what the players make of it. So this latest interruption of the game is meant to address that. To adjust what we make of it.
Yes, the PG thread has truly evolved from the way it was on the original thread. And evolution can be a good thing because I do believe that many of the changes have been good ones. But evolution isn't always great. Ask an emu if it likes how evolution f-ed up it's wings. Stupid bird can't fly for sh-- now. No wonder they can get caught so easily and served up in WDW by the thousands.
Speaking as an original player, actually the earliest player besides wdw4us2(Lisa) who is still around, I'd like to add my comments as to what is and isn't working here. You expected otherwise? Of course I may be wrong...but then I've already used up the whole 0.1% of my wrongness alottment this year, so it's probably in the other 99.9%. Hey no one's perfect.
There seems to be two areas of contention here. One is the so-called fluff. I for one enjoy a degree of fluff. Most of you know how I like pushing the envelope with the mods and striving for the limits of good taste. The point is, this had always been a minor part of the game. An accessory if you will. For some time now it seems the game often takes a back seat to the fluff. Case in point, every morning there's like 3 pages of good morning's, dole whips, breakfast and tri-mountain wakeup calls to wade through. While it's nice that everyone is enjoying the social aspects of the thread there are some drawbacks to too much of this.
First, it prohibits the casual or shy viewer/lurker from posting at all. It can come across as too clique-ish. I personally know of two cases where people have wanted to play the game but felt like they didn't know people well enough to participate in the banter and left. This is not to say that everyone hasn't been welcoming to newbies, they have! But like ocean stated...it comes across as being an integral part of the game. As if you really aren't playing the game if you don't request a dole whip every five posts or don't get some of the "in" jokes. While some newbies will ask for explanations, as someone recently did, many more will take a look and leave. I give a nod to Kim for trying to address this problem with her fact sheet. The thing is...can you see how this has probably gone a bit too far when a dictionary is required to play and enjoy this simple game?
Second, having to wade through pages and pages of posts makes it nearly impossible to play for people who want to participate but just can't dedicate the amount of time to this as some can. It's very hard just to pop in, see the current question and post an answer if you know it. One used to be able to take a peek and scroll back no more than one or two pages to participate. But 10 or 15?? Ever wonder why the "put the question in bold" rule evolved? Cuz it's hard to find the questions amidst all the other stuff! I know I've joked about the Snake thread, but you know, anyone can play it anytime. All you have to do is read the previous post. There's something to be said for such an uncumbersome game.
I can only think that Kath (nativetxn) has taken a bite of Maleficent's apple and is fast asleep for letting it get this far. Take a look back at the original thread. We got warnings for the fluff after one or two posts that didn't specifically ask or answer a question. (and really, I was the culprit the majority of the time). But too much of a good thing is....well...too much of a good thing. Again, this is not to say that all non-game banter should be stopped. Frankly the game would suck without it. So I wouldn't want people to go the other extreme and think or say sarcastically "Ooooh I better not say hello or I'll be ruining OT's thread!" That would be dumb. I'm talking about keeping things in check. Might I also suggest that someone start a CC thread on the CB? Then we could goof off to our hearts content. Or use the WDWWDS thread more often....just about everyone is in there anyway and no one's EVER been refused membership.
The other point of contention is the WAY the game is being played when it's actually being played. I suppose this is more my sticking point than the fluff. No offense to the person who invented the AAQ because it started out as a good idea with good intentions. But what's with the handing out AAQ cards as frequently as Samuel L Jackson makes movies? Getting one for seconding and thirding answers?? All that results in is total mayhem. I mean this isn't the Olympics! There's no such thing as two gold medals here. It doesn't matter if you agree with a correct answer or not. It doesn't matter if you come up with the answer 5 minutes after someone else! Part of the old game was trying to get an answer right so you could ask the one you've been thinking of.
And then there's the no-expiration date on these things. I know Disney tickets used to never expire, but the parks could handle people showing up to the gate with a ten year old pass. The PG Thread can't. Lately I've seen 3 or four questions posted in a row starting with..."I'm cashing in my AAQ from two months ago.." When AAQ's were invented, they were to help out on a short term basis. I don't think they were meant to be banked indefinitely. What's next...selling AAQ's on eBay??
There has been talk about too many ongoing questions at once. On this I wholeheartedly agree. The game used to be about collectively trying to answer a specific question, not coming up with the most questions. In the old days it WAS one question at a time. Someone would ask and someone would answer. Whoever answered first asked another. If they couldn't within a reasonable time, someone else politely stepped in. More than one question was deleted because it was posted at the same time. If the asker wasn't around to verify an answer, people waited...again for a reasonable time before asking another. A pretty simple formula that worked well. There were no stepping on each others toes in a mad rush to post a question. Occasionally there would be two questions outstanding, but that was the exception more than the rule. I think the reason that this changed is because the focus of the game changed. Now it often seems to be a quest for who can be on the top of the Number of Posts leaderboard. Somehow having the most posts to this thread has translated into being the most valuable to the thread. Somewhere along the way too much attention was placed on how many posts the thread contained...how many pages were added in a day. In my opinion, who give a flying fluck how many times someone has posted! That's as valuable as an expired Fast Pass. Anyone can crank up their post stats. We used to pride ourselves on how long we kept the game going and how long we kept people actively playing and having fun....NOT how fast we could swamp the board so that we had to get shut down every couple months. How is THAT fun?
I think part of the problem is due to another quest of sorts. The quest for a Shacky. Perhaps the reason some of the questions have become unanswerable, thus prompting a flood of additional questions is that too much credit is placed on getting a Shacky. While it was a good idea at first...a way to recognize a classic question like the Love Shack itself, the original thread was NOT about getting recognized for asking a question that no one could answer. Consider this, most people don't even know who asked the original Love Shack question. Why? Because what was revered was the question itself not the individual who asked it. What made it great was how obvious it was...how it caused us all to replay walking through the park. It didn't catapult A-Dad to God status (he did that on his own). It was about the game....not the players. Now that's been reversed. No one really cares about the question or if it was really a "good" one that was fun. Just that the person came up with something no one else could answer and somehow that makes him or her rise in stature. Again, anyone can look up some obscure fact that no one really cares about and ask it. This is not to say that some of the Shackys that have been given out haven't been worthy of them. I would say most of them have been. And of course you'll never catch me complaining about MrsA's nice pair, no siree, not me. ( I'm talking about Shacky's here...) But the game is NOT about getting a Shacky or having the most posts.
I have often heard the explanation, "Simultaneous active questions keep the thread moving." Can I ask, moving where? Moving to chaos maybe. What, is it going to evaporate if there isn't a constant barrage of posts? What are the mods going to do, close it down because they think no ones posting to it anymore? Afraid that regular players are going to lose interest and jump to the Snake Thread? So what if it slows down while we try answering a question? Is it polite to think, "Well I can't answer that question or I'm not interested so screw it, I'll ask another...maybe I'll get my Shacky this time." What's the rush? The next time I play chess, I'll have to remember to move twice in my turn to keep the game moving. Huh???
The last topic that was mentioned that I'll comment on is where the questions and answers come from. Originally the majority if not all the questions came from a person's personal knowledge. Part of the fun was thinking them up....coming up with new ways to turn a softball into a fun question. Thinking of ways to cause the players to delve deep into their memories of the parks. And, for the most part, people at least attempted to answer them from their own personal knowledge as well. Again, I refer to the original Love Shack question. That question did not come from the Web, nor did the answer. Sure various sources on the net have been relied upon from time to time, but it wasn't a contest of who could find the answer the quickest online or who knew where the trivia sites were so they could snag a question from there verbatim. Oh there have been some really good creative questions in here lately, asked by regulars and newbies alike! Quite a few actually. But there's also been a lot of questions that clearly have been pulled from an entry in some stat book or found on some obscure website, that no one could ever answer unless they had that same book or bookmarked that site. While there's nothing wrong with this kind of question or relying on "sources" to play the game, too much of this results in a contest of who has the best search engine, who has the most books or who can dedicate the most time scouring the internet. There's nothing wrong with tough questions, but there's nothing wrong with softball questions either. Part of what keeps this thread on the Park board is that it partially gives other DIS members a place to find some interesting things to look for when visiting the park. I seriously doubt that anyone really cares about knowing the exact date and time when The Polynesian Resort's room 2233 had it's original carpet installed and by whom. There is no leaderboard for anything here.
Now for goodness sakes will someone call someone else some names? Throw in a swear or two. How about physical threats? Give Kath something to work with here.
