Parking - Most unusual situation

Last week DW and I decided to head on over to DLR. It was a Sunday evening and we wanted to see Christmas at night. We'd already been earlier during daylight hours. We arrived just around dusk and entered the parking structure. Just like normal we showed our pass and got our ticket and was directed up the ramp. We were sent to Daisy.

This is where things turn strange. When we got to the top of the ramp we noticed a whole line of cars merging with those entering the level. A parking attendant was there just watching. As we made our way through, every aisle was open. Usually they have them coned off when the aisle is full and they direct you to open spots. We knew that by being sent to Daisy we were going to be expected to "fill in" those spots left open by those who left earlier. What we didn't expect is that it was a free-for-all. No attendants were even attempting to direct cars, much like the Christmas parking rush at your local mall.

Unlike the local mall, all the rows in the parking structure are one way. Once you pick your row, you can't turn and head back up the next row. If you pick your row and there are no spaces, you end up back in line to go all the way back around again. This is why there was this long line wating to merge with all the cars entering the structure for the first time. We didn't realize what was going on the first pass through and we went by several empty spaces waiting for the attendant to "guide us" to where they wanted us to go. No dice.

We passed a couple of attendants and finally stopped and asked one. He just shrugged his shoulders and pointed to a general area and said ... "people seem to be finding parking spaces over there somewhere. Good Luck".

That was it. I was left to wonder what would have happened if they had sent too many cars up to the Daisy level. The exit doesn't allow you to re-enter or go to another level. You are sent back out on the street, looking for a way back to the parking structure.

Unbelievable.

Well, we went back around and grabbed one of the first spaces we saw ... way in the back. We saw people heading the wrong way down the aisle, people backing up down the aisle and general chaos in the area. I have never seen this. Ever.

As we headed into the park we could see that many people were leaving. Trams were full and there were more full trams taking people out of the park than those coming in. The park was crowded, but not that bad ... I've definately seen far worse.

I've only seen it like that when the park is within a few hours of closing. It is indeed a mess, we usually park in a farther away space just to avoid having to go all the way around again because there wasn't a close spot.

It's always like that at night. They only direct you in the morning/afternoon, after that park where you find a spot. We've actually done the backing down an aisle to get a spot but only if we saw it from the opposite side and only if no one was already driving up the aisle. We've also left the structure and came back to park on a higher level because the level we were on was either too full or people being stupid.

Ugh that doesn't sound fun. This is why I always park at the Toy Story lots. They are never as crazy and even when I've come around 5 pm they still have people directing you.

We have come at night several times and that is the first time we experienced this. Didn't know it happened that often. Good to know. We'll be more prepared next time.

May have to consider the Toy Story lot next time. Haven't tried it. Technically speaking, the AP parking is only good for the Mickey and Friends parking structure, but I've heard they don't turn you away.

Nope, the parking is good for all three parking locations (M&F, Toy Story, and Pumba). I hate the M&F structure and always park at toy story and never once have heard it isn't valid there.

Does anyone know if this is true for AAA tickets as well? I've never had a need to use them but I was wondering, in case we ever do have to drive in from a farther hotel...

It's not unusual for no CM's to help with parking after noon or so. We head up frequently for afternoon/evening trips and we usually have no help but it's not normally a big deal. Could just be due to more people with the holday season. My youngest and I did head up yesterday and got there around 12:30 and we did have someone direct us on Daisy, which was a surprise but very helpful.

We are SoCal residents/AP holders and go nearly every weekend to DLR. If you have parking on your AP it is valid at all of the lots. When Toy Story first opened we didn't use it because I was stubborn, I liked the tram and the structure and thought the lot with bus would be stupid. Now, we only park at Toy Story. I gave in because I'm currently pregnant and my husband insisted that Toy Story was a shorter walk from the car to bus than from car to tram and that the bus ride is shorter than the tram wait. HE WAS RIGHT! Now we only park at Toy Story and it is SO MUCH BETTER than the parking structure. LOL, taking the bus also makes us feel like we're at Disney World :thumbsup2

Anyway - the "free for all" at night during busy season has been a normal occurrence that we've encountered. Your AP parking pass will work at Toy Story, and if you're willing, I HIGHLY recommend trying the Toy Story lot next time you go.

Have fun trips and try not to let it stress you out. :)

That's so strange, both times I've been to Disneyland and M&F parking structure at night. I was guided both times, Tuesday nite in Daisy level, and Sunday on Minnie. Normally if we go at night and no one guides us to park is usually during the off season, or no holidays.

The craziest parking experience we've ever had was the first year they had the Halloween fireworks. One time it was so crazy they had us parking right in entrance part of M&F. The part before you pay to enter the parking structure.

I experienced this "joy" on Friday night around 9pm at the Mickey & Friends lot. I had never noticed the one way aisles before because they I was going to the Park during the day. Friday I was going to the Trader Sams to drink and didn't want to brave the 9th Ring of Hell that was the DTD parking lots. After once complete circle we just grabbed a spot in back, sucked it up and walked. I can't even imagine the frustration if there were two lines of merging traffic with cars circling like sharks. ARGH!

Thinking back on this I know I've come to the park before and not had parking attendants. It was the fact that there were SO MANY CARS and no parking attendants that shocked me and made this experience so frustrating ... and strange.

We go in and out of the structure at all times of the day, we've experienced this quite a bit. Both on and off peak times it happens. We aren't "regulars" either, we are 6 hours away. You can park in any lot with your AP parking, the free parking is good at all 3 lots.

AAA tickets are also acceptable at the TS lot, we used ours in April (before we upgraded to APs) to park there with absolutely zero issue. :)
