When I asked this question in the past, someone on the board told me about iconparking.com. You can print out coupons and find the best place and the rates.

Find street parking. It may sound crazy, but we were able to do it in July 2008 when we were in NYC (or I should say, DH was able to). We had a rental minivan, and the quote for parking was something like $60/nite, so DH circled around for about 20 min and got a spot 3 blocks from the hotel. We had to be very careful that followed instructions, etc., for street parking limits, but I think the total cost of feeding the meter was around $5 for the 2 days.

(DH is from Chicago, and is very good with street parking in the city, which helps).

If you choose to use street parking, some areas don't have muni-meters...that would be ideal. But the streets that do have muni-meters, read the signs...all streets are different. Some are 1 hr parking, others are 3 hours. It is usually between $2-$4 an hour with the muni-meters. I actually prefer parking decks/lots...if you get in early enough, you can get the 'early bird' special for $20/day. HTH!

A couple of ideas to add to the suggestions above--the farther off the beaten track you get, the easier it is to find street parking, and the parking lots are cheaper too. In Midtown if you go as far west as 10th Ave. it's not that difficult to find street parking. But be very careful to read the signs and restrictions, especially for alternate side parking days & times.
