We are going on a cruise out of New York. We would like to go a day early to see a few sites. We will be driving from Chicago. Right now, our plans are to stay in the Springhill Suites near Newark airport. Pick up my MIL from Newark that night. The next day tour the city. Then around dinner time head over to Laguardia to pick up my sister and mother who are flying in. Then stay in the Fairfield Inn that night near Laguardia.

I thought it would be cheaper/as cheap to park someone in the city for our day of sightseeing rather than try and take the subway back and forth into Manhattan since there will be 6 of us the first day. Plus it eliminates the need to go back to Newark area to pick up the van then drive over to Laguardia.

Any recommendations for places to park in Manhattan? I think we will stroll around Central Park and the Theater District and have lunch somewhere in the area.

I live in Chicago, so I know about the cost of parking in the city!!

We always use the Best parking link above. We can usually park for the day for about $35.

If you have an iPhone, or smart phone, I use the Best Parking Ap to find a garage near my destination. (usually a hospital or doctor's office in my case)

Thanks! I just downloaded the Best Parking app!

Thanks for all the suggestions. The Port Authority bus terminal looks like a good location for us.

I always go to icon's website and print coupons for the area I will be in. Usually it's park all day for around $15.

We did a Disney cruise last year that sailed from Pier 91 or 92 I think. Anyway it was right next to the Intrepid and they had cruise parking right there. Check with your cruise line and I'm sure they have parking available and can tell you how much. Before that Icon is a good one to use and they are all over as has been mention and sometimes have coupons and deals available.

Are you going to have the luggage in the car? Be careful about leaving valuables in the car as the garages are not liable.

Check to make sure the parking garage is open (sometimes it is shut down for construction projects) and get there early, as it does fill to capacity.

Another option would be to stay somewhere in Secaucus area and take the bus in. Many of the hotels there will gladly let you park for the day and also store your luggage for you. The buses run pretty frequently and it's a quick trip into the city. New Jersey Transit has great kid fares. Most of the time the drivers don't even make me pay for the kids.

ETA: it's a quick trip from Newark to Secaucus.

Coming out of the lincoln tunnel drive straight up to 42nd. the is a parking garage right there in front of you. 485 West 42nd Street. It's a self park garage that if you get there before 9 am parking is only $15. Use this garage all the time when we go with the fam. It's about a 10 min walk from times square area. There is also another garage on 44th between 8th and 9th that charges $21 enter before 10am. that one I don't have the address to

I think she said she is driving a van. If it is a full sized van you may have to do a little more research. Parking a regular car is usually no problem but the price goes up for suv's and vans, plus not all lots may be able to accommodate a van.

artesian-can the garage you mention near Lincoln tunnel accommodate a minivan??
