Do we get free parking at the Grand Californian if we are staying on points? We need a car at the end of our trip. Trying to decide if it's cheaper to rent and park for five days than to get a town car/shuttle for a group of eight.

Yes, you get free parking at GCv when staying on points.
The free lot is "across the street" but it's not farther from the villas than parking at VWL.

(Of course there's no point in driving to the parks, the Grand's lot is closer to DL and DCA than any of the park's lots.)

The "self parking" is free. And as mentioned the lot is across the street, but do pull up to the lobby with your car to unload and check-in first. That way the rest of your party doesn't need to come to the lot when you park the car and you don't have to carry bags as far. (Of course if you have a Porter take your bags from lobby area you don't have to carry your bags at all.)

(I've always been told you get 2 free self-parked cars with DVC reservation. On most recent trip they mentioned "1 free parked car" on phone when I called in so I had the lady double check and she said that we get two free parked cars since we had a larger (2-bedroom) villa. Not sure if that means on studios and maybe 1 bedrooms they are only allowing 1 free car or if this individual was confused.)
