We have a 6:30 am flight out of PHL on Wed., 3/2/2006 and we'll be needing a hotel room for 3/1. Anyone have experience with nearby hotels that also offer a shuttle and free/cheap parking? The onsite hotel is a bit pricey for our tastes and $18 a day parking is not going to happen. Thanks for any info offered.

Hi Bill,

I would suggest that you not use the Airport Ramada. Although the long term parking is safe and convenient (I park there when I fly out of PHL), the hotel itself is digusting, rundown and very very dirty.

Hi Bill from PA.

We always stay over when we take a early flight. We have stayed at the Ramada, Holiday Inn, and Comfort Inn. They are all in Essington, which is about 2 miles up the rode from the airport (5 minute shuttle ride). They all offer free parking for up to two weeks and the airport shuttle. They are right across the street from each other.

Holiday Inn was the best out of the three. The rooms were clean and neat and the parking area is well lit and close to the building. We have stayed here twice with no problems. The shuttles are first come, first served but run fairly frequently. Stayed here twice, both times left car for one week.

Comfort Inn. This is right next door to the Holiday Inn. The rooms were nice and neat. The parking was ok, but not as well lit as the Holiday Inn. They make you sign up for shuttles when you check in, but it is still first come first served, so I am not sure what that is all about. We have had rather long waits on the return to the hotel from the airport both times we stayed there.
Stayed here twice. Left car for 1 week first time and 2 weeks when we went on our honeymoon.

Ramada. This is across the street from the Holiday and Comfort Inns. It is generally cheaper than the other two. Parking is ample and fairly well lit. The rooms are HORRIBLE. Dirty, gross, very dated. I would not stay here again if you paid me. Stayed here once, left car for 6 days.

Feel free to PM me if you need any further information.

We have stayed at the Embassy Suites at the airport. I'm not sure how much you want to pay, but I usually got it for $119.00 - $129.00 a night. That includes free parking, shuttle, and continental breakfast. They also offer a manager's reception at night (just a few different snack foods). The rooms we had were clean and we didn't have any complaints.

I work right along the airport corridor and know the area well. Please do not wander too far afield looking for a hotel in order to save money because some of the outlying areas can be a little dicey with regards to safety (Chester). I haven't stayed in any of the hotels, but have been to a few for luncheons and meetings. The Ramada is the farthest in distance from the airport, but the worst choice by far. And their food is not great, either. :sad2:
Many airline pilots/attendants stay at the Holiday Inn. It is not a bad choice and probably the best one. One of the closest hotels to the airport besides the Airport Marriott (which is pricey) is the Renaissance. However, pricing there probably would tend to the high end. I've attached a partial list of hotels in the area - there are a half-dozen more - Hilton, Sheraton Suites, Four Pointes.

Bill from PA,

We flew from PHL in January (there were six of us) and rather than take two cars and worry about parking we rented a mini van from Budget at AVP just for the drive down and also reserved one for the drive back......ended up being less expensive than parking at PHL. We just drove up to curbside checkin and got rid of the luggage and five of us waited at security checkpoint while DH went to drop off car at Budget and shuttle back....took about 30 minutes total. We're doing the same thing this Saturday......only this time it's just DH and I.......got a car at AVP for $32.00 total and $35.00 from PHL on return next week. I think the prices I got for parking were between $60.00 and $75.00 and that was economy lot. So it's basically even
and our car stays home in the driveway for the week. Of course I live right below AVP on the other side of 81 so it's a piece of cake to pick the car up and return it. I know you're in the WB area so it would be a little further.

beccasmom mentioned the Renaissance. I called them directly and was given a AAA rate of $79.00 to stay the night before our flight and leave our car there for the week. Got the same rate on our return since we are arriving in PHL late so we will wait until the next morning to drive home. This was less than the Holiday Inn rate (stayed there last year). We're not going until the end of June, so I can't tell you much about it. Looks OK on their website.

Thanks for all the helpful info, I got some new ideas from this thread. I never would've thought the Ramada would get bad reviews, but with 2 thumbs down here it's off my list. I did consider 2 one-way rentals from my neck of the PA woods to PHL but with a 6:30 am flight, I want to wake up and go. I'll be sure to stay close to the airport to keep the shuttle ride short and I was looking at Four Points because I have Starwood points from the last two stays at Swan and Dolphin so maybe I can get that free. I didn't think of checking AAA, now I'll give Renaissance a look. I'd be happy with something in the low 100's so it looks like we're going to do OK, my only concern being the length of the parking at 12 days. Thanks again!

I work right across the street from the Renaissance and have been there for many meetings. The hotel itself is fine, although I cannot speak to the quality of the rooms. I know many of our vendors use it because of the proximity to our office and the airport. It is less than a mile from the airport.

Absolutely agree with the Ramada being a run-down dump. Their parking security is great as are their shuttle drivers and rate per day (6.95 a day if I remember right) However, I think your best bet is the Embassy Suites. Clean rooms, free breakfast and free parking.

Just be careful and make sure you ask if parking is included in the cost. I know quite a few charged for parking when I was searching the first time. I can usually get the Holiday Inn and Comfort Inn for about $80 a night. They also include free breakfast, but we usually have to leave too early to take advantage of that (most places don't get b-fast out until 6 am.).

One word of advice - don't stay at the Comfort Inn. We're from central NJ and had an early flight out of Philadelphia last summer. We thought it would be a good idea to stay over the night before, park and take the shuttle to the airport. Well when we checked in we were told that the shuttle for the next morning was already full. The hotel was ok - not a dump but not something I'd consider even mediocre. In the morning DH had to drive me, the kids and all the luggage to the airport, drop us off, take a taxi back and do the same thing in reverse upon landing. This year we're going to take an early morning limo.

Bill, DH and I stayed at the Hilton on Island Ave. last week 4/29 flew out on 4/30 left our car at the hotel. It was fine. They have parking up to 14 days. Not sure how much the rooms are we stayed on Hilton points. They do have park and fly packages. It is a nice hotel and there is a Sports Bar (sandwiches and things like that) and "The Landing" a nice restaurant. We parked near the front entrance so that there is a lot of activity and more secure. The shuttle go out every 20 minutes starting at 4am. When you get back to the airport you pick up the curtousy phone at baggage claim and tell them you need a pick up. Go to zone 3 and await for the hilton shuttle. NO PROBLEMS.

The holiday inn, mentioned in a previous post can be booked online at the Park and Fly rate at http://www.park-and-fly-hotels.com . It says their rate includes up to 14 days parking. This can vary from hotel to hotel. Some only allow 7 days, some 10, some 14. They will charge you for extra days above the allotted limit, so be sure to inquire before booking :-)
