Park Entry Security Tips

In June they were making everyone with cargo shorts turn out the pockets and almost all of them went through the metal detector so it really wasn't much faster.

Agreed. My husband wears shorts with long pockets but they don't qualify as cargo shorts and he always carries a day bag. On our last trip, he had to go through the metal detectors 70% of the times we entered a park. He really was ticked when we parked at Epcot to go to the Studios so we walked through Epcot and then to the Studios. He had to go through the detector at Epcot and then not a half hour later again at the Studios. The next day, detector for him again at Animal Kingdom and then again at the entrance to Epcot since we drove over there after Animal Kingdom. I was with him all of the times and had a small cross over body bag and regular shorts and I was not directed to the detectors one time.

I actually had one open my wallet and fan thru my credit cards. I felt that was unnecessary to touch each of my credit cards and my health insurance card. You want to open the wallet fine, it was a small zipper squared wallet, but to touch each of my cards was not looking for what he was supposed to. I always have everything opened and ready. I didn't have walket opened because my change would fall out, as well as cards. I was tempted to log a complaint on him but didn't waste my time. I did and have watched my credit cards though. It never happened before nor again

What exactly constitutes a "bag" Does a fanny pack, or small cross-body purse count as a bag that would need to be inspected?

As others have said, both are classified as bags. You will also likely need to remove them from your body. Security is not able to check any bags attached to the body. I even saw them send one woman who had a rain poncho that folded to a wearable pouch sent back through the bag line. Even though she told them what it was, she still had to take it off the belt it was attached to, and open it up. She was not happy.

So no matter how large or small the bag is, have all compartments open/unzipped, and any smaller bags inside also open/unzipped and you should be ok.

This happened once to me during our recent 9 day trip. I was not happy either, thankfully it was only once. I didn't mind all the other digging through my bag (I do have a pretty big backpack), but the wallet search was a bit too much.

Another tip: On our most recent trip in May, two security people asked me to open my hard eyeglass case so I did it for the rest of our trip. It was in my crossbody bag and I do open all zippers and compartments. Also, if you have a light jacket or wrap stuffed in there like I do, take it out before they check, it makes it easier for them.

I can't tell you how many people I saw who tried to go through with bags and coolers in the bottom of their strollers.

It surprises me how people will try to disregard the rules. In Epcot, hubby went through bagless and when we met up with him near Spaceship Earth, security people suddenly showed up and stopped a woman who went through bagless with a bag and took her back to bag check. She happened to be walking near hubby through the bagless entry and was close to us when we met up.
