You are correct, but there are some excellent discussions on the budget board about other discounts. I just priced out our week of tickets at http://floridaorlandotickets.net/ and for 4-day park hoppers, 2-day Universal and tickets to Disney Quest, I am saving a considerable amount over the Disney Club pricing and it doesn't even come close to the length of stay pricing.
I can tell you first hand that I have ordered 7 day hopper plus tickets from http://www.floridaorlandotickets.com and they came fast via Priority Mail and I had them checked at the turnstiles my first day using them and the CM confirmed that there were 7 prks days and 4 plus options on the tix. These are legitimate vendors. They are registered with BBB (I checked) and they have a secure website for ordering. If you want to pick up your tickets at their Kissimmee office, there is no delivery charge. They will ship via Priorioty Mail or deliver the tix to your resort for a fee. The prices are better than you can get with Disney Club.
Does anyone know if you can you buy a seven day hopper plus from the online discount sales mentioned above then "trade up" for a AP or PAP when you get to WDW?
Just an fyi-- I just ordered 5 - 5 day park hoppers, 3 adult and 2 children from FloridaOrlandoTickets.com and with shipping via priority mail, they beat the Disney price by $56. They beat the Ticketmania.com price by $15. Gotta save those pennies when you can!!
I was just about to order two tickets from the floridaorlandotickets web site, however I was under the impression that if the site was secure, the url would start with https. This one did not, so I am hesitant to put my credit card number in. Does anyone know anything about their security? I wanted to order before the price goes up on Tues.

Yes, you can upgrade, but it won't save you any $$. The price paid is encoded in the magnetic strip on the back of the ticket You won't get the "gate price" of the hopper applied to the upgrade. Rather, Disney will apply the amount you paid as a credit to the price of the AP/PAP.
