Parents resist chemotherapy for son.

"State statutes require parents to provide necessary medical care for a child, Rodenberg wrote. The statutes say alternative and complementary health care methods aren't enough. "

Straight from the article. It isn't the parent's decision.

In a life/death situation, I do not agree with you. A parent is required to provide their child with the proper treatment. Herbs do not treat cancer, chemo does. It's child abuse. It's like a parent deciding not to feed their baby. The baby will die if it doesn't eat, and they aren't allowed to do that. They are sentencing their son to certain death.
I never said I agreed with the parent's choice, but it IS a parent's choice. Like I said before, someone could involve child protective services, and it may help.

Example, do you know how many kids go without vaccines? Those, IMO, are vital to a person. It's the parent's choice is they want to vaccine their child or not.

It is not a law to get chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer, therefore, it is not against the law to refuse it. Simple, end of story. Parent's choice.

I just saw the headline that the mother and the kid are on the run. Even though I disagree with the parents choice, its not up to the judge to decide how the kid should be treated.

I must say - it's a preference thing. However, the son should be the one to make that choice.

I mean... it's either undergo a long, exhausting procedure to possibly make it better or just live life while he can.

Like Jimmy Buffett says, "I'd rather die while I'm living than live while I'm dead."

I'm not encouraging this or even really taking a stance on it. I just believe it's your life - live it how you want.

The son has an extreme developmental delay. He can't even read yet. He might not be able to handle what's actually happening, and he probably doesn't know much about cancer - his parents obviously don't.

One less stupid fundie in the world, amirite?

no your not...

That's what I mean. By law, they are required to care for their child. If they don't, they'll be charged with child abuse/neglect. You're just not allowed to do it.

And this kid WILL die if he doesn't get chemo. 100%. If he gets chemo, he has a 90% chance of living. That is CHILD ABUSE to not let your son get chemo. I thought I read somewhere that the judge ruled that he had to get it, but maybe that was a different weirdo kid not wanting chemo.

It is not child abuse if the parents decide to heal their son by herbs...

Well, I'm going OT here, but the vaccines things depends on the person. For me, it is vital that I get the flu shot every fall - without it I get VERY sick. For someone else, they can probably do without it. There are some vaccines that are vital for everyone, but not others. For example, I haven't had the Guardasil vaccine yet because it's too new with not enough information about it yet.

LOL, sorry for going off topic.
I just saw the headline that the mother and the kid are on the run. Even though I disagree with the parents choice, its not up to the judge to decide how the kid should be treated.

The problem is, this has become a life or death matter. This child has a 5% chance of living up to 5 years without chemotherapy. With chemotherapy, he has a 90% chance of living to 5 years.
The mother is, essentially, endangering her child. He has been on the holistic remedies since January, and it has been proven with diagnostic testing that his tumor has grown back.

Problem? Mom doesn't want to treat him, therefore he can't come to terms that he is sick. It even says in one of the articles if anyone tried to give him chemo he "would kick, scream, punch".

is this the kid that has like the 90% chance of living with the chemo.
sorry i didn't open the article
but i think it's the same thing me and my friend
read about in history the other day when
we were looking up current events

Hodgkins Lymphoma is a very treatable cancer, that's what I can't get past! My uncle had this cancer and has now been cancer-free for quite a few years -- in almost perfect health!

Exactly. I only know one person who's had it, he's a senior from my school and he's still undergoing treatment, but from what I understand it's very treatable.

Maybe she's like that whackadoodle mom from Wisconsin who refused to call 911 for her diabetic daughter, who did in fact die from whatever she needed the 911 call for. The mother believed that all diseases were because of sins (like when her son was chucking, he was 'ridding himself of the devil inside him') and that God would cure her daughter. :rotfl2:

It's one of the most treatable forms of cancer. It's so sad that he'll die because of this. :(

I do believe that the family has a right to try other forms of treatment.

But, since they did try that and it didn't work, he should be getting the chemo.

The kid is only 13 and can't read. Chances are he doesn't know how serious this is for him.

His mom was being very irresponsible by running away with him

The parents need to accept that their child has cancer and he could die from this. Organic and natural things just don't work with this sorta stuff. They are brainwashing their son that cancer is not a big deal but it is. You can't run away from cancer. It just doesn't work out that way. I can't beileve that there doctors are not putting their foot down and say No! your way is not going to work chemo is best and only option to cure this. The tumor is growing again, and now they are back at step 1 just like they were in Januray. Its just sad and it makes me so mad!

Yes! Thank you! My dad had non hodgkins, which there is a slightly different percentage rate of survival, but its still super treatable and often likely to stay in remission much like hodgkins lymphoma. Thats why I'm baffeled and I don't want to start a huge debate, but its such a treatable cancer why didn't they just give him the chemo and by now he'd probably be cancer free (lord willing obviously), but his chances with hodgkins are AMAZING. I was told thats a "good cancer" to have if your going to have cancer. Which obviously there is no good cancer, but someone was trying to make me feel better about my father. He has been in remission and continues to be. All by the grace of God and modern medicine! :thumbsup2:goodvibes

This subject makes me so mad. He has a curable form of cancer to top it all off. If he does the chemo, there's a VERY high chance he will be completely cured and live a long and healthy life. If he doesn;t do the chemo, he WILL die. His mom deserves to get hurt.

D: The boy needs to suck it up, stand up to cancer, and get treatment. Cancer doesn't wash away with water; he needs real help.
