Parents of the High School Class of 2017/College 2021

Sorry I dropped out for a while. It sounds like there are some very exciting things going on. Congrats to all of those!
And to those who things are not the outcome hoped for, I am so sorry. Even though DS2 has great opportunities ahead of him, he is still carrying around the disappointment of his rejection. While I know it hurts, I feel he needs to give it up and be grateful for what he has. We are now faced with the decision of how to complete school. He is having surgery on May 1st. The minimum time he has to miss school is 2 weeks, after that he will be able to attend part-time. If he does this, the absences are just excused and he will have to attend Saturday school as well as take finals. If he goes homebound, he will have to miss all the senior "fun stuff." But he is the one who wanted the surgery as soon as possible, after tennis season is over, and did not want to wait until the summer. :sad2:

Good luck to those still waiting on decisions.

That's tough timing :( Wishing your DS a speedy recovery!!

Good luck to everyone waiting for decisions today!

Yes. She's meeting with her college counselor tomorrow to discuss the waitlist(s).
Let us know what the counselor says. I'll suggest the same to my DD after we hear from UMN. Just when I think she's passed on UMN she goes and wears her UMN Goldie (Golden Gopher) tee to school .

Whew-its been a long year but it is all over tonight after 6pm- we will FINALLY know where she is going to go and I can finalize it! I am pretty sure its northeastern unless by some miracle she is accepted at one of her reach schools and they give a lot of money LOL
Northeastern is a great school. Keep us posted!

We paid DD's deposit to Virginia Tech last night and bought our first piece of VT gear! It's getting real!!!!

Good luck to all the kids getting news today! Hold on Dis Mamas, you are almost at the finish line.

Whoop! Whoop! That's so cool :).

Duke - Denied.

This was expected but still disappointing for him. He has worked hard and and no one could ask any more of him.

My DD had ACL surgery in early May her freshman year and was out for two weeks and then only part time for most of the rest of the semester. We didn't wait until summer so she could be recovered enough to swim and compete in high school by August. She was on pain meds and used an ice machine a full week and her PT didn't even start until she healed for 2 weeks (her surgeon liked to wait while most started PT right away). Most of her teachers worked with her. They sent work home for her and she was able to do make up most of it. We did make one mistake that really bit her in the butt. I *thought* she had a quiz in Geometry and I sent her in to take it and get out of the way while slightly high on pain meds so it was one less thing to do when she came back. I was wrong. It was a unit test and she got a "D" on it :headache: which brought her whole grade semester down. Three years later and I'm still kicking myself over that one, lol.

Frankly, I don't think this semester counts nearly as much as other semesters do. The kids have been accepted and they have received their scholarships. I think that, for the most part, colleges understand senioritis and as long as kids pass they will be fine. From what I've read only a "D" or an "F" will make a difference. I do know that sometimes offers are withdrawn ... I know a boy who was accepted to Brown and had his offered rescinded due to poor grades. Here is a thread about when colleges rescind over on CC: https://talk.collegeconfidential.co...n-do-colleges-rescind-acceptances.html#latest . I guess what I'm trying to say is that he probably doesn't have to bust his hump to get A's and B's while recovering from surgery.

IIRC, your son was accepted to two auto-admit state schools, right? Texas and A&M? You may want to reach out to the admissions department because the auto-admit might work differently.

Good luck to him on his surgery and I hope he has a quick recovery!

ETA: SHOOT! I just realized that we forgot to put her ACL surgery under "special circumstances" to help explain her freshman 2nd semester GPA (her lowest of all). Oh well.

I know every school is different but we were at northeastern accepted student day this weekend and someone asked about 2nd semester transcripts. The answer was no D's, F's, or convictions. The last one was pretty funny. My daughter calculated that she could literally not turn in any work the 4th marking period an still not get lower than a C.

Exactly. I think that last semester high school grades are like a new car: they both lose their value as soon as you drive off the lot. I'm not saying that kids shouldn't continue to try their best .. of course they should if only for the pride of doing a good job. But, extenuating circumstances aside, if my child were in the same situation as @v.t. 's son I would not be stressing about getting straight A's with all the physical and mental things to overcome due to surgery. It would not be worth the stress for something that is not even taken into account.

Well, that sucks. It's especially tough when they gave it all they could and they are still denied. How many more are you waiting for today?

Ack, I think dd's 1st choice is releasing decisions today. Feeling very nervous, more about $ than acceptance.
I need to play the dang lottery :)

We too will be committing following the results today from Berkeley. I told my DD this morning...... 14K Yes and 70K No's - This odds are not good, especially for OOS

Sorry I dropped out for a while. It sounds like there are some very exciting things going on. Congrats to all of those!

I'm sorry, even though "expected" it still stings.

This type of planning is something my DS was famous for!:rolleyes2
DD is having a dismal semester in IB HL Physics. She actually emailed her admissions counselor at her #1 who basically said "all merit/scholarships are carved in stone once offered" she breathed a big sigh of relief although "dismal" in an IB/HL (Higher level) class is so heavily weighted that its not all that tragic but she was still stressing a bit.

Wait a second... Do both your boys play tennis? I just watched a set of twins play some amazing doubles matches over the last two days at districts...

I have three that carry around hurt for quite a while. And if I'm honest, I know exactly where they get it from. Mine is still stewing over the rejection from a couple of scholarships. He can still go to the school of his choice, but he's still feeling the rejection. I'm sure that your son is grateful underneath the hurt. He will come around. I know the feeling of "get over it already!" so I feel for you, too.

Good luck with all the logistics of finishing his senior year on a good note!

@J'aime Paris Wondering if your DD decided between Madison and Marquette yet?
Did you visit Marquette more than once...did your DD do a shadow visit or anything?

Thanks for checking in sksjasams:)
No official decision yet........DD says she's made up her mind and wants to plan a "reveal" for the family. I sure hope it's soon, as she has no idea how many grey hairs I'm accumulating!!

We've visited Marquette several times, as we only live about a half hour away. She didn't shadow anyone at Marquette, but we know quite a few Marquette alums. And we did a couple of tours. One for the dorms, one general tour, and a Health Sciences tour.
She has shadowed several dentists, since that is her intended career.

We've attended a couple of basketball games too. They are a great time!!

We only officially toured UWMadison once. But DD's best friend has a brother at Madison. So the girls have spent time on campus when visiting the brother. BFF wants my DD commit to Madison with her. I think that has been the hold up....DD has been torn about separating from friend or not.

Thank you for your follow up! I have to say, it would drive me crazy knowing she knows but isn't telling yet. I can appreciate her flair, and she is definitely building the excitement for you :)

I would really like DS to see Marquette one more time to help him decide - we are only a little more than an hour away. Since he was waitlisted at Madison, Marquette and Iowa State are now his top two choices. We visited ISU last weekend, but that is too far to go again.

Please post after your DD's big reveal!!

DS has dubbed today 'rejection day.' He's probably right. But, at least he won't always wonder. As his friend who got into MIT said before sending in his application, "Someone has to win the lottery." I hope it's someone on the DIS!

For us its "waitlist day" so far- So far waitlisted at tufts and NYU today- waiting on 2 more after 5pm

I hate waitlists, but I hate rejections even more. I'm sorry your kids are getting frustrating news so far today.
