Parents of the High School Class of 2017/College 2021

I just don't believe that something taught in a high school classroom is a good replacement for something taught in a college classroom.

I agree with this 100%. I'm sure there are some amazing AP teachers out there who are really preparing these kids well, we just don't have any at our school. He needs to retake all his AP courses in college, even the ones he did well in.

My son did have an excellent chemistry teacher in high school. He got an A in the class and a 5 on the AP exam. But because that's his major he decided to lay a good foundation and start with Chemistry 1 in college. (He was really thankful for that credit though when he was able to opt out of a very time consuming lab his freshman year). When it was over he said he had made the right decision. He did the same thing with Physics that said he could have easily taken that credit and skipped Physics 1. You almost need a crystal ball to figure this stuff out.

He was more than happy to opt out of some other classes outside his major though.

That's too bad. I guess we'll see how well AP prepares one for college level classes. Next year my daughter is taking calc II which is a program designed by Syracuse university and taught at her high school. She'll actually receive credit from Syracuse at the end of the course.

Do any of your kids participate in the PLTW (Project Lead The Way) stem program? Mine does, loves his classes, got all A's in his engineering and computer science courses and did very well on the exit exams. I'm just curious to know how these courses are approached at your schools. At his school, they count as AP courses. At his friend's school, they do not. What gives?

In the end, our personal approach is that we don't put that much importance on any of the specific AP or dual credit courses in high school. I tend to look at them as preparation for taking them in college instead. I just don't believe that something taught in a high school classroom is a good replacement for something taught in a college classroom.
I think it depends on the class. I think there are a lot of garbage Freshman classes taught in college (like Language Comp) that are just "fillers" and you might as well get them done in HS.

Totally agree with that. As an engineering major, my son was thrilled to use his AP English credit to get out of Freshman English.

Something else to consider though is that if they take all the "fluff" out of their freshman schedule with AP and dual credit, they are going to be left with a much harder course load as they are just settling in at school.

I dropped my daughter off at Brown today- we set up her dorm room and had a parent orientation before we left- Its so quiet here without her!!

Funny you should ask - this email came to my DD on Thursday July 7th from College Board - 9 days notice. Every kid who took the SAT on May 7th at this test center has 9 days notice to retake. My DD is furious. Several of her friends who are affected are out of town and cannot make the make up date. Also, the make up location is over an hours drive from our area. DD will have to take an day off her summer job at short notice in order to accommodate this make up date.

Below is the email we received from College Board.......

Dear Test-Taker:

We regret to inform you that we have not yet received the entire shipment containing SAT® and SAT Subject Test answer sheets from your Saturday, May 7, 2016 test center, XXXXX HIGH SCHOOL, at our processing center. Unfortunately, the shipment is still unaccounted for, despite exhaustive search efforts. Although we will continue to make every effort to find the missing answer sheets, experience has shown that if materials have not arrived by this point, they are unlikely to be located. For this reason, we have made arrangements for you to take a makeup test on Saturday, July 16, 2016.

Makeup Information:

To take the makeup test, please report by 7:45 a.m. on Saturday, July 16, 2016 to the test center noted below. You will be issued an updated Admission Ticket by mail, or you can print it through your online account at collegeboard.org/mysat. On test day, be sure to bring your updated Admission Ticket along with your acceptable photo identification with you to the test center — you will not be admitted without them. Check your Admission Ticket for what else to bring on test day. If you are registered for the SAT or SAT with Essay, you may opt in or out of the Essay at check-in as long as sufficient materials, space, and staff are available to accommodate the change. However, you will not be permitted to change your test type from the SAT (with or without the optional Essay) to Subject Tests, or the reverse, on test day. A complete list of test-day guidelines can be found online at sat.org/test-day and in the Student Registration Guide.

Your scores from this makeup test will be reported as Saturday, May 7, 2016 test scores. Scores are usually available about seven weeks after a makeup administration. If you have concerns about the timing of your score report delivery to colleges and scholarship programs, please contact SAT Customer Service at the number below. Note: please remember that there is a fee for sending score reports, starting ten days after your original test date.

Other Testing Options:

If you are unable to attend the makeup, you are entitled to a free transfer to a published test date. To transfer, please call SAT Customer Service (see the number below). As you consider your options, please keep in mind that some tests may only be offered once or twice a year (for example, certain SAT Subject Tests) and that the makeup might be your only opportunity to take the test for which you registered. Please visit sat.org/register for a schedule of available SAT test dates. You may also want to check directly with the colleges and scholarship programs to which you are applying to make certain of their deadlines for receipt of test scores. Check sat.org/scores for detailed score availability information.

For the SAT only: if you ordered the SAT Question-and-Answer Service for your original test date, it is not offered for the makeup test, and any fees will be refunded automatically. The Student Answer Service is still available for the makeup test.

We apologize for the inconvenience this situation has caused you, and we assure you that every effort is being made to locate the shipment of answer sheets. If the shipment is located before the makeup test is administered, we will notify you immediately, cancel the makeup, and expedite the scoring of your answer sheet.

I'd be mad too. And confused - I thought it was a computerized test? How can they lose the answer sheets? I'd be asking questions.

Oh, I thought they were all done on a computer now. Which is more common - paper or computer? What is the procedure for sending the results to College Board?
I have not heard of a computer version. The SAT and ACT tests my son took were pencil and paper. Curious what other experiences were. We are in Massachusetts if it makes a difference. I was responsible for turning in my materials to the site coordinator. Not sure what she was required to do with them. I did have to sign the materials in and out with the tracking numbers.

It's a paper based test. Much of it can be computer scored. Short answers, essays are hand scored by certified test scorers.

The tests have to be returned to a scoring center. I don't know if they're regional. In any event material would be handled by a courier like fed ex.

Unfortunately, shipments get lost sometimes. It really is terrible. I would have been mad if it were my kid. I'm sure there's been an investigation and it will continue but college board has to do something in the meantime. If the retest accommodations aren't to your satisfaction call them. They really will try to do what they can to make retesting work for your needs.

Fortunately other than having to arrange a day off of her summer job and having to test again its not super inconvenient for DD. Same cannot be said for several of her friends who are cutting vacations short and flying home.

The kids and parents know stuff happens. They are annoyed that College Board waited 7 weeks to notify and then only presented one makeup option which came with such notice.

I've started the asking questions wheels. They have a pretty huge obligation to ensure the safe keeping of the score sheets and when their system fails IMO they have an even bigger obligation to bend over backwards to offer makeup options and expedite scoring.

I know the whole thing stinks. I'm sure the college board isn't too happy (they don't score the test). However they didn't just give one make-up option. You can transfer to a regularly scheduled administration like October. I know it won't make it better but there are 1.6 million SAT exams administered each year. Unfortunately with that volume getting sent to scoring centers errors will happen. Wherever your daughter took the test is responsible for packaging the score sheets and sending them to the scoring center.

What is your daughter doing at Brown? I'm trying to get my daughter to look at Brown for college. If you can will you post how she likes it?

IMO I paid College Board, they are responsible regardless of the system or the location. The location was designated by the folks who I wrote the check too.
The October was our back up depending on the May score. One of our kids has to take a Chem subject exam over, October is not an option for her. She spent 4 monthss studying and then 7 weeks go by and now she has 8 days to prepare and is out of state on vacation.

I get it, things happen but when things happen then make it right as quickly and painlessly as possible for everyone affected. We started contacting College Board at the 4 week mark. They stalled for an additional 3 weeks.

She is doing a summer pre college program there- doesn't help them actually get into brown for "real" college but there was a program she was interested in there and she got the deans scholarship that covered the whole cost of the class, I just paid room and board so it was do-able. She had her first day of class yesterday and she face timed me last night saying she liked it so far. She made some friends on her floor, one girl from New Hampshire, one from Boston and the other from Guam. Her dorm room is SO big compared to other colleges we looked at! She really loves the area, she can walk to all kinds of places, that is her one big deal with picking a college is location, she will not go to one like Fredonia which is in the middle of no where, se wants a major metropolitan area around here like NYC,Boston, San Francisco etc. The Summer@Brown program she is taking is 3 weeks long and is about cancer biology, it includes a lot of lab time which she likes.

Sounds like a great program. I hope she continues to have a great time. I know my daughter got a few things for summer college programs but none that interested her enough to pay the price. She's good at science but it isn't what she wants to do.

My daughter also wants an urban school. She wants to be at a school where she can she regular people doing regular things (as she puts it). Her top choice cities are DC, Pittsburgh, Boston and NY.

Is anyone else considering a gap year?
