Parents of College Class of 2018 (A.K.A., "Is this the line to the poor house?")

So my dd goes to school in MN and one of her best friends in ND. We picked her friend up at her school and went to dinner Saturday night. Sunday night when we came back home here there was a news story that they were looking for a missing ND freshman ( no one we knew). Sad enough he was missing and our girls are the age in the same area (the two universities are only a few miles apart). Tuesday they found him a couple of miles from my dd school. Today they announced it was murder. Now I am sure my dd is just as safe as before but to say it freaks me out a bit, would be a fair statement! I wish they would release some more details so we know if it was random or something. This on top of ds telling us a girl was raped on campus already this school year. Can I put her back in her bubble please?

Oh my gosh! How scary! I would be freaked out too. A murder and a rape.

on a slightly lighter note ... and I use the term light loosely :lmao:

parent weekend is this weekend. I've made cookies & snacks. I fear "I" am the one who's going to gain the freshman 15! ACK!

:lmao: That was my thought last week when we visited. Not from baking, but 2 dinners, 2 lunches and 2 breakfasts out!

I've noticed that our grocery deal is way down and my grocery shopping time is cut in half.

I hadn't thought about the time but I'm definitely cutting time as well. Honestly more time for myself is a perk. My DH has already joined a Christmas Choral at the local University that meets once a week and tonight I will be the DD for the inaugural meeting of The Whiskey Sippers.

I need to come up with some hobbies other than working too much, missing DD, and shopping for care packages.

Frightening! I've shared the recent stories in the news with DD. Prayers for safety are said daily.

Glad to hear everyone seems to be doing pretty well. We're still holding our breath but our daughter is doing pretty well, especially given that she has a pretty tough slate of neurological issues. She's only an hour away but is staying on campus even on the weekend. We've settled into a nice routine of driving over on Thursday after her last class and taking her out for dinner then taking her back. We go back again early on Sunday and take her out for a leisurely breakfast and then usually a Target/Publix run. That seems like a lot but it seems to refuel her coping meter and she's chosen that schedule. It's also honestly good for us to lay eyes on her and make sure in person that things are okay.

But overall, I'm beyond proud. Her grades are good, she's participating in activities (especially with the honors program), and she's doing all the little things that can be hard for her at times.

No fall break for us but we're getting a condo on the beach next weekend with some family members and it's close enough to her college that she'll be able to join us. She's excited for the time away to regroup and so are we.

disneymom1 - I am so glad to hear that your dd is doing well and your schedule sounds like it is really working to help keep her on the right path.

Another vote for mom gaining the freshman 15!!! Between meals out when we visit and eating away the sadness at home I hope the scale doesn't start going up.

DS is doing great. DH went down yesterday to take him to an ENT. He has been having daily nosebleeds since he got to school. He had to have cauterization but it should stop them. Turns out his anatomy is to blame, lots of little vessels close to the surface. He was not happy after the procedure but did thank his dad for driving 2+ hours to take him.

He has pledged a frat and is making lots of great relationships that way. The frat he chose has a big emphasis on community service and academics and no emphasis on partying, which ds is thrilled about. He wants to have fun w/o the pressure of drugs and alcohol and so far that is what this particular frat is about. They have the highest GPA on campus if that counts. :) Frats were in the news this week around here and when I talked to ds he assured me he would quit if there was any hazing/partying that he was forced to do. And knowing him, he would quit!

I still miss him like crazy but oddly enough I am getting used to the quiet and our little family of 4. We haven't taken his chair away from the table yet though. lol He'll be home for fall break in a few weeks. I can't wait to have him all to ourselves for a few days.

I am glad that your daughter is adjusting well. It must be very nice to see her so often. I wish I could visit my son that often.

I'll bet that will be appreciated! I should make a batch of banana bread when I visit my son. I would have to carry it on a plane though. I don't know if that would be a good idea or a bad one.

That's exciting about the frat. It sounds like a good one. I hope that goes well for him.

My son is driving to Dallas tonight. I think the entire Corps of Cadets is going out there this weekend. It sounds like a lot of fun.

My DD had nosebleeds daily for years beginning when she was a toddler. At one point she was getting several bleeds a day, head over the sink with blood gushing out. What did the trick was a teeny tiny bit of Vaseline in her nose each night and in the morning ( using her pinky finger). The amount was extremely small because if inhaled into the lungs, the Vaseline would get stuck in the lungs. She did this for years and still uses Vaseline in the dry windy spring we have here. She tried KY Jelly first, but that didn't work. Her pediatrician said the Vaseline was safe to use as long as she used a tiny bit.

I got a text this week from DD of a picture of the cover page from a recent calculus exam she took with a 99% grade and "wow" written on it. DH texted her back asking why she didn't get a 100%! He was joking, of course! She's been busting her bootie to make good grades.

I killed our thread! No posts since mine on the 27th. :lmao:

DS came home this weekend, first time since Labor Day. It was a quick trip but so nice to have him home. He told me he really enjoyed taking a shower with no shoes. LOL He'll be home again in 2 weeks for fall break.

How is everybody?

My daughter was home for this weekend. She had an event here on Thursday and another today, so she decided to just stay here. I think it was not to visit us, but because she went to her friends house for about 6 hours on Friday. ;)

It was nice to have her here, but we didn't actually see her that much. She ate, she did laundry, went to her events, went to her friends, and beyond that she mostly stayed in her room and slept.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

She told me that she felt like she was missing too much by being here instead of at school, and that I should expect her home again overnight until Thanksgiving.

We are flying out to see our son next weekend. There's a football game and a BBQ. Then the next day our son said is a father-son event going on. I think they are chopping wood for the bonfires or something. We have the entire week off, so we are visiting other family members during the week and then will be there the following weekend with our son again for family weekend.

We are so excited. Every time we talk to our son he sounds tired though. He's got a lot going on and chooses to do things on his days off.

I hope everyone's kids are adjusting well by now.

Things have been really stressful around here. DH had a positive 6 month checkup at MDA and on the same day my grandpa got a terminal diagnosis. :sad2::sad2::sad2:

DD will come home next weekend for her first visit since August. We are looking forward to a great week end.

Ds was home again this weekend to get his car  (his friends from home went and picked him up) and when he got back to school he realized he had forgotten his student ID. :confused3 Now he's probably going to have to pay $20 for a new one. But I sure didn't feel like driving out there to "rescue" him....even though his school is only 1 1/2 hrs away. He will be coming home next weekend as we have 2 family birthday parties. But I did take him shopping (food and clothing). He says his roommates/suitemates share food and supplies (except for one kid) so it makes me feel good to send him back with a bunch of stuff. He says he loves his one roomie and 2 of his suitemates (his 3rd roomie isn't an athlete like the rest of them are, so he seems to feel awkward around them, and one of the suitemates is kindof stuckup but tolerable). He also said when he goes to work out, he gets stared at alot. (Well, it's not because you're 6'5/6'6, blond, blue eyed with a chisled body, ya think? :rotfl2:). He is also playing club baseball as opposed to Varsity this year as he wants to acclimate to college and club ball is not as demanding. I am looking forward to his first game in a couple of weeks. He says he is doing very well at practice, and really likes the coach. He also got a 94 on a paper...so proud of him!

I'm so sorry. Will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. :grouphug:

So sorry sk!mom - hugs to you.

And how are all of the parents doing? It is still very weird to not have DS here and then when he is home, that's weird too. Still adjusting....
