Parents of College Class of 2018 (A.K.A., "Is this the line to the poor house?")

My poor DS has 6 classes this first semester......Guess that is what happens to the engineering kids.....He is thinking about taking a summer class or two to lighten his load during the semester....

That's a tough schedule for an engineering student! I think it's smart for him to lighten his load with summer courses. A coworker of mine has a son who is an engineering student and it really helped to take some courses each summer.

One of the things I am encouraging DS to do is to take a few CLEP tests during Senior Year. If he can knock 6-9 hours of basic core courses out that way, that should lighten the load a bit.
(Back in the old days I managed to knock out nearly a year's worth of classes with CLEP; these days not many schools will let you CLEP that much credit, but 9 or so is often very doable at a state school.)

That's a great idea. Every bit helps.

It's interesting that you posted this question/topic because DD called me yesterday after a meeting she had with her adviser to discuss her classes for next spring. She is majoring in Biology with a pre-med focus, so she has to take certain classes in order to apply for med school. This semester she took a required chemistry class which was a pre-req for the first biology class she needs, and also for the next chemistry class she needs. DD discussed her tentative list of classes with a pre-med adviser which included a biology class plus lab and a chemistry class plus lab. The adviser cautioned her against taking two lab science classes in the same semester! He got DD worried about this. He told her her grades could suffer and that getting into med school was very competitive and that she didn't want to lower her GPA, something DD is well aware of. But after looking at the bio and chem requirements and pre requisites, there is really no way around taking two lab classes in one semester. Taking one lab class a semester at a time would throw DD way off the 4 year timeline to graduate due to the pre-requisites.

Her scholarship also requires her to take 15 hours. If she drops below 15, she loses her scholarship. She has 16 hours this semester, and next semester she'd have 17 hours with the two labs. Taking one of these classes in the summer would mean 4 hours a day of class, plus several hours a week for the lab and several hours a night of studying and lab write-ups due to the summer sessions being shorter than a regular semester. She planned on working this summer to have spending money for next year and she wanted to start getting volunteer hours. She was also interested in a program where pre-med students go to Honduras for 2 weeks to volunteer in a health clinic. She can't do those things if she is in summer school.

So now this pre-med adviser put this fear in her about taking two lab science classes. She knows it will be very challenging because she'll also have a second semester of calculus, plus two other classes, one of which will be an honors class. Now she doesn't know what to do! Either way though, she has to take a minimum of 15 hours per semester. She is not working right now. School is her job. I suggested she go back to her biology adviser that she she talked to last summer, but she doesn't want to make another appointment because she already had to also see an adviser from the honor's college. She feels like she's getting too much information from too many people and it's making her head spin.

On a lighter note, we are all on fall break here for a four day weekend. DD will be home later today until Sunday. Tomorrow we are getting up at 4am to go to the International Balloon Fiesta for the special shapes rodeo day, weather permitting. We went last year and while the balloons all inflated, they did not take flight due to high winds. There are approx 540 hot air balloons in the Fiesta this year and over 130 of those are special shapes. If the balloons go up, I'll post some pics tomorrow. The weather for tomorrow is iffy.

Wow. I don't even know what to say. She certainly has her hands full! I don't blame her for being confused when she hears different advice from too many people.

The balloon festival sounds like a blast. I hope you can post a picture!

who is it that's sending the fun care packages? can we get a post with just that info? please and thanks! :)

We made it out early this morning to see the balloons. The sky was cloudy, so not the best lighting for photos, but here are some pics from our 'staycation" for DD's fall break. Tomorrow we are going hiking at a national monument called "Tent Rocks" which are cone-shaped rocks that are the result of volcanic eruptions 6 to 7 million years ago.

I am so enjoying fall break with DD! I hope everyone else is enjoying some lovely fall weather and fall break with their kids over the next few weeks!

Awesome balloon photos. I want to go now.

DD was home this weekend and it was wonderful. I decided that her coming home is my preference. She's in a cool college town with lots to do and we enjoyed parent's weekend but having her here was more relaxing and gave us a lot more time to just hang out and talk.

She came home with a shopping list and a massive amount of dirty laundry. I enjoyed shopping with her and happily did the laundry while she caught up with friends. We went to the ballet twice and she went out with ballet friends after Friday's performance and to a frat party after Saturday's with some friends who are attending the local University. I fixed two of her favorite dinners, we attended a family birthday party, she had brunch with a friend who's headed to Russia and the Bolshoi ballet in a couple of weeks on Saturday, and brunch with family on Sunday morning before she headed back. She DH and I also went shopping Saturday afternoon and she got a new dress for the ballet since we decided to go again Saturday night and she found her Halloween costume.

Honestly it sounds like a packed weekend when I think back and realize that she got home around 2:00 Friday afternoon and headed back right after brunch on Sunday but it really felt more relaxing than when we went there. She made the 4 hour drive alone just fine.

I woke up feeling a bit said Sunday morning. She brings such positive energy into the house but it was a delight to see her so happy, full of stories, and so excited to go back. I'm so glad that she certainly seems to have chosen the perfect school for her.

She did look a bit different. She's now a redhead with a pierced lip. All who saw her this weekend loved the hair color. The lip got mixed reactions. The grandparents and 91 year old great grandpa found it a bit difficult to understand and were surprised that DH and I were just "whatever" about it.

Those balloon pics are amazing!!!

My dd is at home right now, sound asleep in her own bed, while I am at work. She came home Friday before dinner. I was freaking all afternoon about her making the 3 hour drive, she has never driven farther than 20 miles before, without me in the car. But she made it. She and her roomate both got out of the car with huge bags of laundry. She said you could tell who was going home for break, by the numbers of people carrying laundry into the parking lot :rotfl:.

We have watched 3 movies, 1 episode of Supernatural, The Walking Dead and the Talking Dead, saw Dirty Dancing the Musical and went boot shopping (sucessfully!). It has been glorius!!!

Tonight her friends that are still in high school are coming over, so I won't get any quality time, but I will be glad to see them too. Tomorrow she has an appt at 10, then I will take her to lunch, and I'm guessing that will be goodbye, until Halloween. I don't want her waiting until evening to make the long drive back up.
It stinks because it's been so wonderful, just like the way it used to be, and it's going to be very hard when she leaves again. I know she will be back again in 3 weeks, but still, I can't help it.

She brought home a brochure about the Eurspring program they offer for upperclassmen, to study in Europe. It's only $11800, not including tuition for the semester, super cheap right? UGH!

I guess you mean me :wave2: but I'm not sure what info you were wanting specifically?

I'm heading to mail the stuffed pumpkins this afternoon. Still feeling skeptical and worried

I'm heading to mail the stuffed pumpkins this afternoon. Still feeling skeptical and worried about how much it's going to cost. I'll report back

My pumpkin weighed right about 3lbs and cost $5.95 for 1-day Priority mail with tracking. Not as bad as I thought it would be! :)

Thank you for posting those balloon pictures. They were amazing! I had no idea there were going to be balloons in so many shapes and sizes.

I envy those you who are able to have your kids home for weekends. That must be wonderful. Every time I pull up to our driveway, I miss my son's vehicle that used to be parked there.

My husband and I visited our son this past weekend. We went to his brigade BBQ and then watched our son march in with the other cadets. Wow. What a sight to see. We were so proud of all those young men and women. Although my son isn't in the band, we enjoyed watching the band members at half time. They were absolutely incredible with their formations.

The football games wasn't so great (his school lost), but it was a lot of fun watching the game.

We are flying back this coming weekend for Family Weekend. Unfortunately, between the cadet stuff the ROTC stuff, we won't get to spend every minute with him. We will take what we can get.

My pumpkins both weighed right at 3 pounds. The one staying in state cost $7.50 and the one leaving the state was $8. I was told that I couldn't mail them priority unless they were in the flat rate priority mailers. Still not too bad for fun packages. I'm tracking them to see how long delivery takes.

We won't see DD until Thanksgiving which will be the longest stretch.

DD mentioned last weekend that she and her friends are discussing the possibility of getting an apartment next year. Anyone else have a kid already thinking like this.

DH was at first negative to this idea but when DD pointed out the ridiculous amount we're paying for a "cell" and "crappy" food he started to come around a little. She says that she buys so much of her own food anyway that if we could cover the rent with the current room and board budget then she could buy her own groceries.

My dd said a bunch of the film students want to rent a house next year, for 8 of them. I told her I didn't know if anyone would let that many kids rent a house. I kinda prefer she would live in a campus apartment next year, to still be close and secure, but we shall see.

my DS has a housing scholarship. no move to an apartment for him, unless he comes up with the difference. I don't think he minds dorm life ... and upperclassmen have suites that are new-ish and they have the option of only buying flex dollars (as opposed to the full blown meal plan) there, so I'm pretty sure that's the route DS will go.

Wonderful balloon photos!

I finally heard from my son that he got the emissions done on the car he has. There is only one place in the town so he had to make an appointment.
I've ordered his car tag and told him to go grocery shopping this weekend because he won't be able to drive the car after Oct. 24th until he receives the new tag.

He says he's fine with that - he's barely leaving campus except for grocery shopping. I asked him to look into the address for me to fedx the tags to him but he never responded to that.
Maybe next year he'll do the emissions in Sept. like I suggested so it isn't cut so close.

He also said he's doing ok in grades at school which knowing him just means he's passing his classes - I'm sure there are no straight A's but I'm just glad he's passing. LOL

He hasn't decided if he's coming home for Thanksgiving week or not. The dorms are open that week. He did say he misses my cooking so hopefully he'll decide to come home.

I'll be sending out his Halloween goodies in a couple of days. We are still having mail issues so it's taking a long time for him to get his mail so I'm sending it way early so he'll hopefully have it by Halloween.

My DD has a tuition scholarship so we are paying 100% of room and board so that won't be an issue. I honestly haven't seen any truly "nice" dorms on her campus. It's really shocking how much we pay for such run down housing. They do have some upper classmen efficiency apt. But the cost goes up even more. If she does this, I will want her to get one of the secure, single lease apartments just off campus.

Yep! My DS will be moving off campus into a house with a group of guys from his performance group. It is still within the perimeter of the campus patrol in the city. Leases are going to be available this week or next already! Yikes! Talk about planning ahead.....
