Parents of College Class of 2018 (A.K.A., "Is this the line to the poor house?")

My DD is procrastinating about her essays & it's driving me crazy. I am trying to remain calm but the deadline for the early action for her top school is October 15th. She did her brag sheet & requested transcripts but not the essays. I am going to pull my hair out...She is calm as a cucumber & keeps saying she has too much to do with her regular classwork & that she will do it on the weekend but the weekends are coming & going...ugh. :headache:

Ok vent over.

By the way, I had to take my 2 younger kids (12 & 14) with us on 2 college visits & they actually got a lot out of it. :thumbsup2 It got them thinking early.

I am in the same boat. DD has one essay done, it just has to get from her backpack to the computer and she can submit one app. I had hoped she would submit it a month ago. It is due for EA on Oct. 1. The other EA school she is applying to needs 4 essays and only one is done. Just wanted you to now you are not alone!!!!

I think every senior in this town is taking the ACT tomorrow .... :lmao:

Thank you for that! :goodvibes

My dd is going to an 18th bday slumber party tonight, but only a few girls are actually sleeping over because the rest are taking/retaking their ACT tomorrow. So glad we don't have to deal with that!

I just got an email from the senior class sponsor that next week is no fee application week for most Indiana private schools. I know what DD is doing this week-end! I love her senior class sponsor, that woman loves the kids so much! She has to be one of the most helpful people we have run into since my kids have been in school!

I guess the official name is College Go Week. Not sure if its only Indiana or not.

DS score from March is good enough. for 90% of what he's applying for ... it's good enough. but, one more point would be great, and two more would be awesome :teacher:

We are very happy our DS was named a National Merit Scholar Semifinalist, but the application includes another essay to write.......Ugh! Like they don't have enough essays to write already.......

My DD is also doing her shots downtown, old town, and the botanical gardens too! She did not want to do the Bosque because so many of her friends do, now that you mention the bugs, I am really glad we are not going there on Sunday. We are excited. They have the little head shot done at school with the school designated photographer, then each senior gets their own yearbook page and we provide the photos and the layout.

The bugs there were awful! Thousands of tiny gnats everywhere. DD got bit about 10 times by various bugs in the 10 minutes we were there. We are not used to dealing with flying, biting bug. We are too spoiled with the usual dry air. I hope all goes well and that the weather cooperates for your DD. It poured outside an hour before we met the photographer, but after that cloudburst passed, it was all good.

why, why, WHY do I read at College Confidential?! According to that site .... my son shouldn't even bother to apply anywhere.

we don't have weighted GPA. we have extremely limited AP class choice. and for goodness sake, he barely made it over a 30 on his ACT.
:headache:

I know, right? My DD's ACT score sounds similar to your DS's score. She was real happy with her score until she read some posts on College Confidential about other's scores as they were being posted the day the scores came out. Looked like she failed compared to those on CC whining about their score of a 35 and wanting to test again!

DD just got her first two academic acceptances in today. She still has to audition, but she's super excited to know that someone will take her!

Yay! Congrats to your DD. How long did it take from the time she completed the application?

Applied on September 12th (app and SAT scores). Counselor sent transcripts on the 15th, received acceptance in mail on 23rd.

They were two schools that sent the "Select applicant, no fee, quick decision" invite. Since they were already on DDs list, she jumped on it!

Congrats on the NMSF!! :yay:

Congrats to your DD! I'm sure she is super excited!! :hyper:

No news here... TAMUG says they're still "waiting on something that goes in the acceptance packets" so they say it'll probably be next month before they start sending out acceptance notices. Ugh. A bunch of DS's friends already have their acceptances for A&M, but the main College Station campus. The Galveston campus seems to run a little behind, I've noticed. But it'll come eventually. :)

DS is just enjoying his Senior year. His AP Physics and AP Calculus classes are as challenging as expected, but the rest of his classes are non-AP this time around. I think it was a good choice -- he has had so many AP classes already, and he has a ton of calculus homework every night as it is. And AP English or Economics isn't going to be necessary for his major. He did decide to not take Latin this year -- the teacher moved and I'm not sure it's even offered this year -- and he really, really wanted to take Auto Tech instead of that and one other elective. (AT takes up 2 class periods.) He is *loving* it! He has never been a gearhead type of guy, really, but I think he has surprised himself by liking it this much.

I have to admit, I wasn't a big fan when he first told me he wanted to register for it... was afraid it would "look bad" on his transcript or something stupid like that. Just a kneejerk reaction. But now, I see that it's a really good foil for the super hard classes he's taking. It gives him a chance to give his brain a rest, comparatively, and just work with his hands which he does love. I think he made a really good choice. Anyone else's kids taking an elective you weren't so sure about at first?

First marching band competition is next weekend, and then our free time will again be erased -- but I can't wait. I so love to watch the band, and can't wait for this year's competitions! Just really sad that it's the last marching season. :-(

we need more of those. I just paid the $50 fee :faint: to a safety school. and it's a rival school, which makes it even worse!!!! LOLOL

the way the higher level learners are scheduled at DS school is 4 challenging (honors/AP level) classes, one class where they're a teacher's aid, and then a not so rigorous elective. DS is taking multimedia publishing. He wanted to get into Journalism (which surprised the heck out of me!) and it was full. It's a pretty good balance. Last year he took PE2. Now that was the one I wasn't so sure about. LOLOL

Yay for the Honor, boo for more essays!

Congrats on everyone's acceptances, merit scholarships, etc. Sounds like the train has left the station and the ride is about to commence!

Such an exciting, flustering, anxious time for all of us and our kids. And it's nice to have a place to share the ups and downs. Thanks everyone!

CONGRATULATIONS to your DD!!! Very exciting, tell her to break a leg at her auditions!!!! :cool1:

DD just submitted her second application last night!!! :yay:I have not mastered noviance so I can not tell if her transcripts have been sent. I know she submitted the form to her CC but I can't tell if they went out. I think he sends a letter with each transcript though I imagine it is the same letter for each school. :confused3
