Parents of College Class of 2018 (A.K.A., "Is this the line to the poor house?")

We can add to the good news trend!

My daughter received a letter today from what has become her (surprise) #1 choice. She has been awarded one of their competitive scholarships in addition to the merit based ones. So they are now giving her almost 70% of tuition and dorm fees. And as long as she keeps a certain GPA, all of the scholarships are 100% renewable each year.

We are going back to visit on Monday just to make sure it's still what she remembered and is looking for but I'm pretty sure her mind is pretty much already made up.

Very exciting!!!

WHOOP!! Congrats to your son!! :yay: And the ROTC scholarship has to help! I can't remember, was he going into the Corps? At least you won't have to worry about housing if he is, since they have their own dorms. And good job on signing up for the NSC already! Classes get filled fast from what I understand, and the earlier NSC you register for, the better. Are y'all going to the big A&M Open House this Saturday?

No new news on our end... Friday we'll be at TAMUG all day for another Sea Aggie Preview. Really, we just want to measure the dorm room for storage and furniture purposes, and he wants to do the lunch-with-an-Engineering-professor thing. We're still waiting to hear back on the Terry Foundation scholarship finalists announcement, but that probably won't be for another month or so. He turns in his application on Friday for the other big scholarship he's applying for. Not full-ride like Terry, but still like $10K so we would take it!! Lol.

Congrats to all those with good news, and good luck to those waiting to hear back! Fingers crossed for you and your Seniors!

Yes, he will be joining the Corps. He is very excited and we won't have to worry about housing since it's guaranteed for the Corps. He has to live on campus for all four years, which is fine with us. He registered for a NSC at the beginning of June, so hopefully he will have no problem choosing a great schedule. We live out of state, so we won't be at the Open House.

I hope your son enjoys the lunch-with-an-Engineering-professor. That sounds like a lot of fun! My son spent the night with the cadets and he loved it. I think it's great when they can spend time with people who are in their field/area of interest.

Good luck with the scholarships!

That is awesome!:cool1: Congratulations.

Congratulations Everyone!!! So much good news.

We have been off auditioning every weekend so I have not checked in for awhile. DD has 3 auditions in two different states next week and then the auditions are done. YAY

SidSYM go luck with all the auditions, tell your DD to break a leg.

Again, Congratulations to everyone.

That has got to be very stressful doing all of those auditions in different states. Wow. It sounds exhausting. Good luck to your daughter! I hope everything goes her way. :goodvibes

So much good news coming in for everyone! Congrats to all of your hard-working kids!

I am shocked that the merit finalist doesn't have bigger rewards out here, that scholarship is huge bad gives the student a free ride for all 4 years, including housing and meals. It's still such an honor, so congrats!

DD had a good mail day. She received a letter awarding her with a presidential scholarship to our large local university which is her chosen school. This replaces the other scholarship she was offered in December. It's renewable for all 4 years and covers tuition, fees, and books. Only 120 incoming freshmen from across the state receive this scholarship, so it's quite an honor. Now we wait to hear on the BAMD program on April 1st (longshot) and some smaller scholarships to help with dorms and meals. Won't hear on those until late spring and into summer.

DD is hanging in there but this week has been hard with trying to keep up with school work, dance classes, and rehearsals. She has not had time to go to yoga which helps her mentally and physically...hopefully this weekend. I got sick on Monday. I was so tired. Next week will be crazy especially on Friday when she has an audition at 9:00 am in California and then has to be in Arizona by 4:30. We land at 4:05. Luckily my sister is picking her up and getting her to the school while DH and I gather the luggage etc and follow behind.

The worst part is the weekend before last we were half an hour for Disneyland and next week we will be within 15 miles but have no time to go.

So much good news coming in for everyone! Congrats to all of your hard-working kids!

Congrats to your daughter!! Quite an accomplishment. Sending good thoughts for the BAMD program. The waiting is the hard part.

no good comes from a letter that includes the phrase "we regret to inform you ..." (I held the letter up to the light & could see that much. LOL)

:worried:

oh, well. DS also did not get a call to interview for a big scholarship at one of the schools on his list. we knew it would be a stretch, at best, though. he was not NMSF or part of our state's Governor's Scholars Prorgam. Those are the students they're looking for, most of the time.

trying to remain positive about other applications we're still waiting on. today was a bit of a bummer.

 I'm sorry. Hope you get better news soon.

I am so sorry! These letters are so hard. Your son will end up where he is meant to be. Good luck with the other two schools you are waiting to hear from. pixiedust:

:confused3 On Monday, DD received an interesting email from one of the schools she applied to. It said, you have been academically accepted to the school (congratulations) however, you have not signed up for a dance audition, if you do not pass the audition you will be rejected by the University. We were so surprised all the other schools if you do not make it into the dance program and you are admitted academically you roll over to your second choice major provided it is available. The email said that they had 56,000 applications for 7000 spots. DD called the admissions department to see if she could switch her major on her application and they said no. So she filled out the arts/audition app and she is squeezing in the audition next week after deciding she really liked the school.

thanks! He took it better than I did. LOL ... while it was disappointing, he knew both scholarships were a long shot. He's still got a very attractive offer from his safety school, so it looks like we may be making a visit there for a more thorough look at things. Never a dull moment. ;)

That's great! I am sure it feels good knowing the bulk of her college will be covered.

I don't know where you and your daughter find the energy to do all of this. You two need to have a girls day out and have some fun after all of this is over. Auditions sound very stressful, not to mention all of the traveling you have had to do. Good luck to her! It's the home stretch.

I am sorry to hear about the disappointment. It sure is difficult playing the waiting game and hoping for the best. Hang in there! Six months from now our kids will be attending college and all of this stuff will be behind us.

I just have to share this, I thought it so strange. Dd and I were watching the Jeopardy College tournament this week, and one of the questions was what scholarship the PSAT was testing you for. And not ONE of them knew the answer!!! One of them even went to Princeton. How can none of them know that??:lmao:

LOL! We saw that and thought the same exact thing.....:rotfl2:

Mostly a lurker but wanted to share. When this thread started my ds was going to go to the community college for at least 1 if not 2 years. Instead, right before the school year, he decided to take all his classes at the community college for dual enrollment credit. Then we realized that with his intended major of music, he really needed to be at a 4 year school next fall since he'll already have 1 year of college behind him.

He applied to his #1 school, Belmont Univ in Nashville, and took the ACT in December. His audition was yesterday. Last summer we visited there and he fell in love with the program.

But wait, at the end of January we thought he should look at more schools, more local. (We are in Ohio). So he applied to 3 schools within a 4 hour drive.

While at Belmont yesterday for the audition, he/we decided this was not the best place for him. Then he auditioned, he did fine but was glad to have one audition done.

Next weekend we travel 4 hours for another audition, followed by 2 more in March. It's been a whirlwind around here as he is finishing essays, talking to the counselor to get transcripts sent, etc.

Right now, we are waiting to see if he gets into any of these schools, let alone the music schools.

It is exciting to read of all the acceptances here. I hope DS gets one too but the wait will be awhile...

:offtopic:Sorry for the hijack, but I was wondering if you could tell me more about what made him think Belmont may not be for him? I have a DD - Class of 2016 - and we are working on a list of schools to start visiting this summer and Belmont is at the top so far. Also, what are the schools within 4 hours he's looking at? (We are in IL, so maybe those should be on our list, too!!) She is considering a degree in music, but not completely sure yet.

Thanks:)

Sorry to hijack your hijack but just wanted to say that I know two students currently at Belmont who love it! They have had tremendous opportunities.

It is hard, Last Monday we were so tired. I got sick and she got cranky. DH was about to ship us both out the door because we were just a mess. By the middle of the week we had our act back together. DD has a dance competition tomorrow morning so she is at the studio today. She did find some time to go out last night, relax and enjoy herself which is important. Today she is at the dance studio and I think she is getting her nails done. Then meeting some other dancers from other studios for dinner and going to yoga. She has a short dance competition tomorrow from 9-1. Then hopefully she can pack and work on her last arts app and video that she needs to take with her. Monday is pretty booked with filming, physics tutor and studio time. Luckily we do not leave until late Tuesday night. I am sure I will be very tired by the time we get home next week.

\Six months from now our kids will be attending college and all of this stuff will be behind us.

It is getting a bit too real!!!!

Totally off topic from the usual College plans talk but has anyone thought of graduation gifts. I would love to get DD something meaningful but have no idea what. She turns 18 the same week as graduation which makes it harder as I feel like I need two awesome gifts the same week.

We've considered a new laptop but feel like it would be better to wait until after she's into the first semester since she's going into design and might need something specialized.

Anyone have ideas?
