Another former first grade teacher here. In the school district where I taught, homework was expected by parents but also hated. That was a fine line to walk. So I always tried to explain to parents that homework in first grade is more about responsibility and communication than more practice.
Even experts who are homework proponents do not advocate more than 10 minutes a night per grade level. So I told my parents that homework should only take that long and if it took longer, then we all knew that there needed to be more teaching on the subject.
