Parents - did anyone skip the infant car seat?

Here's another question that's come to mind: what do you do with your relatively newborn baby while grocery shopping? A PP mentioned putting the infant seat in the shopping cart. Do you have any room for groceries? :rotfl: I was planning on using a sling or structured carrier (like an Ergo) while grocery shopping, but I was wondering what other people

I'm planning on using a Sleepy Wrap when she's really little and then moving onto an Ergo (I got one for $60 off normal price on babysteals.com!). This blog has a good comparison of different types of carriers and which ones the blogger has had the best experiences with: http://slingexchange.blogspot.com/2010/03/babyweaing-overload.html

I have heard this too but really, have you ever seen anyones cart tip over from having an infant carseat on it? And like a PP said, I have a hard time believing that a 10 pound infant can tip a cart, but a 6 year old cannot.:confused3

As for the OP's question, I could never do without my kids infant carseats. They are so nice to have, and I loved beng able to transport the baby around without waking them. I found a Graco Sungride last year on sale for $45.00 at Target. They had it marked down because it was a pattern that was being discontinued. So you can fin them on sale.

Some of my friends think I am safety conscious to a ridiculous degree - sunscreen, five point harness seats for as long as possible, helmets every time they ride a scooter or bike - but honestly, I really fail to see how a shopping cart can tip from having an infant seat in it.

I agree, I can't imagine having a little baby and not having an infant carseat. OP - imagine this. You are at Target, and you have to pee really really bad. Where are you going to put your baby? On the floor??

You can hold a baby and pee at the same time. If your baby was in an infant carrier, where would you put the carrier while you peed? I wouldn't want my carrier on the floor of a public restroom either!

:lmao:This cracked me up for some reason. Just the mental picture alone....

I have to agree with this.. *nothing* but the bottoms of my shoes touch a public bathroom floor. Ick!

But yeah, I can't tell you how many times I've peed with a baby on my lap! :rotfl: Zillions, I think!

Yes!! Well, okay, the cart didn't tip, but the infant seat flew out of the grocery cart and onto the pavement in the parking lot. Not my kid, but when I was pregnant with my 3rd this summer I was grocery shopping and was talking to a mom and little baby (she was 5 months old) who were in front of me in line. She was wheeling her cart, with the baby in the carseat on top, through the parking lot when I came out and there was a small bump in the road and the seat literally flew out of the cart and landed face down.:sad1: That poor little baby and her mom were screaming hysterically. Her face was scratched and bleeding, but I don't know if she had any significant injuries as I left when the paramedics came. Either way, it reminded me of why I never felt comfortable placing my kids on top of the cart in their carseats. I always put them in the basket and do now with my 3rd as well. No, I can't fit as much as if the carseat weren't there, obviously, but I manage just fine.

Alternatively, if I need to buy a lot of stuff, I put her in a baby carrier and wear her through the store so I have the whole cart.

So anyway, I don't know if it is a danger of the cart tipping or the carseat coming out like that. There was also a similar story in Parents magazine in the fall, I think, where someone bumped the cart in the store and the carseat fell out or something like that.

But back to the OP, I would definitely get an infant seat. My first HATED her infant seat so we never used it as a carrier, but she was born in February so it was way nicer to get her in the seat in the house, cover her in blankets, then head to the car, rather than carry her bare little body in a blanket, or try to stuff her limbs into a snowsuit/coat.

We did buy a Britax convertible seat when she was a young infant (Marathon), but like others said, she simply didn't fit properly in that the strap slots were too high for her. She was 75th percentile in height from birth till now (she's 6yo) but still, she was too short for the lowest slots. She outgrew the infant seat height-wise around 10 months. She hit 26 inches (the max of the seat) by 6 months old, but her head was still way more than an inch below the seat so she was fine in it.

My 2nd one liked the infant seat (same one my 1st hated) so we did use his out of the car if we were shopping, in a restaurant, etc. He outgrew the seat around 7 months in height, and was close to the weight limit then as well. That seat went to 20lbs and 26in.

With my 3rd, we had to buy a new infant seat as the old one expired a month before she was born. We got the Britax Chaperone, which was very pricey, but I liked the side impact head protection and the anti-rebound bar. As our 3rd kid, the infant seat is invaulable as we are in and out of the car a lot and she would be constantly disturbed if I had to take her in and out. She is not a fan of being buckled so this would result in much crying. ;)

Like someone else said, the seat holds much larger babies than the seats made a few years ago. Ours goes up to 30lbs and 32in. Neither of my kids exceeded that size at a year so I assume that our newest won't either.

But since I know she is my last baby, I didn't want to buy a 2nd base for my husband's car. We tried using one of our Britax Marathons for her, but she was way too tiny (8.1lbs and 20.7in at birth, so decent size). So we just belt the infant carrier in with the seatbelt when we use my husband's car.

Also, this one was born in January, so we bought a "Cozy Cover" and that eliminated the need for a coat. We did put a blanket under the cover when it was frigid, but otherwise the cover will do. Plus no worries about her getting wet when it rains cause I can put the cover on.

Regarding the angle being incorrect when not in the base (or properly installed without the base), that is true, but it is such that the baby is more reclined than should be, not more upright. So their head can't flop forward onto their necks, it just lays straight back. Not sure that is any better really, but they can't asphyxiate in the way they can if their head flops onto their chest.

I would rather that than juggle the baby while I am on the toilet. We only put our carrier on the floor in our house, so no different than our shoes. We dont' wear shoes in the house routinely, but occasionally we have to run back in for something and leave them on, so same thing as the carrier. Now I guess if you put the carrier on your kitchen table or something, that's a different story.

But having peed while holding a baby and peed with the baby in the carrier, well, just no comparison for ease!

I have two kids (18 and 26) and infant car seats weren't around as much as they are now. We used a convertible seat for both of them. I can remember putting one of those little terry cloth things around them because of how little they were. I never had a problem with them. I guess if you don't know what you are missing, you don't miss it. We were just used to taking them in and out of the car seat while it was in the car and carrying them in our arms or putting them in a stroller. We just couldn't justify buying something we wouldn't use for very long.

It can be very convenient to be able to take the sleeping baby out of the car without having to disturb them, however, in the case of my DD, she had outgrown the infant carrier by 4 months. I have to say, also, that while it was nice not to have to disturb her, I never found the carrier all that convenient to carry with me. I see women all the time with the carrier in one hand or over one arm like it was a purse or a tote bag, but I found it to be the most awkward thing to walk around with for any length of time. When she was 4 months we switched to a Britax Marathon (a wonderful seat!!!) and she remained in that until last summer when she was already 5.

Some babies don't like the transfer--so the infant seat is handy.

I found though that as my babies got bigger--boy was that sucker a pain to lug around.

With my son--who was born at 10lbs 14oz...well, he started off bigger and whew!

At 5 months he exceeded the capacity of his infant seat and we had to go convertible. (His shoulders went past teh highest shoulder strap position--not to mention he was heavy and the appeal of the infant seat was gone!)

So with my son--I really ddin't have much of a choice, but it wasn't all that bad. Transferring while they are sleeping--long learning curve to that to keep the baby asleep. But I think you would be fine without the infant seat.

The other thing about the infant seat--a second base means you can easily transfer baby from one car to the other....with a convertible, you'd have to fully uninstall and then reinstall to do that. Not a big deal though if one vehicle is planned to be used pretty much all of the time.

Good luck!

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I went to the store to look at infant seats. I picked up an empty infant seat and tried carrying the empty seat around the store...I am short (5'1") and when I tried to carry it with a bent elbow, it hurt my arm (and there was no baby in it) and when I tried to carry it with a straight arm, it hit the floor and bounced against my leg akwardly...it was just so uncomfortable, that I said "forget it! I can't carry it empty, I cant imagine carrying it with 15 pounds of baby in it too"

And so I never used one.

Then when my son was born, I was still dealing with an unruly daughter (who wasn't even so little by that point), I couldn't figure how I'd carry an infant and deal with her, so I DID get an infant seat, but never carried the baby in the seat, I popped it in the stroller which I always used.

So yeah, you can skip the infant seat, its not 'necessary'. However, it is extremely convenient when the baby falls asleep in the car

Sarah_Rose, if we can manage another baby while DH works at the Seattle-HQ customer service centric company, we'll get a Britax too.

And depending on the length of the baby (assuming baby is 5+ lbs), I wouldn't hesitate to put baby in a convertible from the start. DS outgrew his bucket inside of 4 months by height, so that Graco cost was just a waste.

We HATED using the bucket outside the car; I don't know how people do it. It's incredibly unergonomic and we would have gotten bruises on our legs from it banging on us if we'd slogged it along more than once each.

The bigger issue with infant carriers on top of shopping carts is that the carrier does not *properly* attach to the shopping cart and thus you run the risk of the infant carrier sliding off. The seat was never intended to be suspended 4 feet in the air balancing on a piece of steel 1/8 inch thick.

I found it very easy to put the babies into a sling or soft sided carrier while shopping. That being said, I liked the infant carrier for getting the babies buckled in the nice warm/dry house rather than stand outside in the elements while trying to buckle in babe.

Car seat!?!?! Just get velcro seats and other-side-of-velcro baby clothes and be done with it. :goodvibes

Hey everyone! Sorry for *poofing* last night - I left work to go coach and then came home and was asleep at 7:30. :lmao: Apparently my second trimester is ending...

Thanks for all the opinions - it was so interesting reading through the thread and discovering all the things that you can/cannot/shouldn't do with an infant seat, even if opinion differs a lot on some of those thing. :goodvibes To the PP who said that she is 5'1" and couldn't see carrying an infant carrier around, I think you might have swayed me the most. I'm 5'2" and have no upper body strength to speak of (I'm a runner - what do I need arms for? :rotfl:) so I think I'd have trouble carrying the seat around.

But also thanks to everyone who pointed out that the Britax might be just too big for a newborn. I didn't really consider the fact that a seat that is recommended for 5 lbs+ could be too "tall" for a young baby. :confused3 So I think I'm going to hold off on the infant seat for now, with the full knowledge that DH might be making a quick trip to buy a SnugRide after baby is born.

Bumbershoot - that free carseat promotion that this Seattle-based company has is great! I'll be honest, I don't quite understand it - what is the point of having a nurse from the insurance company calling my house every few weeks to ask about my weight gain and pregnancy symptoms, when they clearly have access to my insurance records (because they are the insurance company) and know every time I see my doctor, and every time a test is done? :confused3 Oh well, I'll put up with it for a free car seat. I just refer to my nurse as my "stalker grandma" and DH and I have a good laugh every time she calls. She called my cell phone last week while I was in the process of ordering a Bacon Baconburger at Jack in the Box, so I had to lie and say that it was so noisy because I was coaching at the moment, so could she call back later? I didn't want to 'fess up to where I was! :lmao:

I am 5'3" with little upper body strength as well, but I can carry my kids in the infant seat just fine. I would never carry it around the mall or something, but in/out of the house, grocery store, etc. it is not an issue. I did have a travel system with my 1st kid, and still had it with the 2nd and now, but it's not my preferred stroller.

When my 2nd kid was 6 months old we bought a Peg Perego Centro Completo (probably closest to the Pliko and Uno combined if that makes sense). It came with a strap to buckle any infant seat into it and I just put our Britax infant seat in there and buckle it up for any sort of long outing.

I also take along our sling/Bjorn/Moby Wrap (my current favorite) and use that when my daughter wakes up, but if she's asleep in the car, she stays in the seat.

One thing that would make or break the infant seat for me that I didn't think of earlier is that my youngest child *needs* to nap. If she doesn't nap a solid 2-3 consecutive stretch then she is hostile and grouchy all day and sleeps poorly that night. She wakes up nearly everytime I move transfer her so the infant seat is critical to her (and my!) well being.

This wasn't so necessary with my older 2 kids, but with this one it is so the infant seat has been a lifesaver!
