My little guy is 4 and has a really nasty cold....not as much head as chest and he is coughing so much he is throwing up..

What medicine do you use for your little ones?

Thanks!

Our pediatrician always recommended Triaminacol. There are different formulas for different symptoms.

My son is doing the same thing right now and he is miserable with all of the choking. :(

I took him to the dr. yesterday and he had me get some Robitussin Cough and Cold infant drops (he is only 9 months). They also have a pediatric version of the same stuff. It contains an expectorant that is supposed to loosen up the congestion in the chest so it is easier for them to get rid of it.

Whenever it goes to my kids' chests, I take them to the pediatrician. I don't mess around with chest congestion. If you have to wait before doing that, I know my sister gives her kids Robitussin. I can't take it because it gives me a violent stomachache, so I've never given it to my kids, but she swears by it.
I hope your poor little baby is on the mend soon. :(

If he is coughing that bad he really should go to the Dr, it could be pneumonia or bronchitis. A strong cough suppressant could make it worse by not helping break the stuff up. They'll also be able to tell you what would work best.

I hope your son starts feeling better really soon.

Thanks everyone! That was a quick response. I will try something suggested here and if not feeling better in a day or two will bring him to the doctor. We have so many people sick in our area that they have actually closed a few of the schools because so many kids are out sick.

My daughter (10) was coughing terribly last week. I mean really, really bad and the pediatrician absolutely insisted no cough meds during the day. He said it is better to let her cough! I explained how she was suffering (it actually hurt her to cough...it was horrible) and he said it was still better to go ahead and cough. Go figure!

He did give us a perscription cough medicine (with codeine) for use at night.

A week later, she's much better but the cough lingers.

The regular Robitussin DM has an expectorant which if you give that with a ton of water or juice will help thin out what is in there, and make it so they don't throw up from coughing so hard. Our DD was doing that too. It won't stop the coughing but makes it more productive (although it doesn't taste very good - we bribed with suckers). Also, good old Vicks Vapor Rub will help ease the coughing fits and helps break things up. That is how I've gotten my kids to sleep through this, by rubbing this on their chests and backs. Hope your little one feels better soon.

Delsym is the best cough medicine we have found. It works when prescription meds don't! You can get it over the counter at Walmart or Walgreens (cheaper at Walmart!) DD has gotten sick during a coughing spell too. Dr. said that if there is a lot of drainage going into their tummies that that can also make them sick.
Hope you all get relief soon and that he feels better quickly! :)

I am not one to rush my kids to the pediatritian at every sniffle. But if they are coughing so bad it makes them gag, if it is a "tight" cough that isn't productive or a deep "barking" cough I will take them in right away.

I hope your little guy starts feeling better soon.

My youngest DD is asthmatic and a bad cough is usually an indicator of other problems. It's worth the trip for me just to have the Dr listen to her chest and let me know if she's wheezing or there seem to be any other problems. The risk of complications for her are just not worth a wait and see.
