For the PPH you have to put down a first nights deposit when you book the room right?

I WANT to make a reservation for 2 nights in december before it books up but I really dont have the money to put down money for one night right now....$280:eek:

But, i dont want to get stuck staying across harbor blvd b/c its just me and my friend and i feel better if we stay at one of teh disney hotels rather than across the street.

Also, what is teh cancellation policy for the hotels?

I know for WDW its 5 days for hotel only and if you cancel after that you have to pay the first night rate but im not sure about DL

PPH is a further walk than most of the hotels right across Harbor.

Yes you pay the 1st night at booking.

Okay, let me see if I can address some of your questions/points (I've stayed at PPH many times, as well as stayed at the other 2 DLR hotels).

First of all, I don't think you have to worry about anything at the PPH booking up this early. If you do not have the $$$ to book now and hold a room, then I would start looking into making a reservation in September, or maybe even as late as early October. I wouldn't wait much longer than early October, though. So this will give you time to set aside money for one night's deposit.

Second, if you do not have an Annual Pass (you can get cheaper rooms - and sometimes really great rates - with an AP discount), then do you have AAA? I believe you can get a 10% discount on the hotels with AAA, though I could be wrong on that.

Third - the cancellation policy is that if you make a reservation through Room-Only Reservations (meaning do not order a package with tickets included, because packages have different policies often times), you have to put one night's deposit plus 15% tax down up front, BUT just like at WDW, you have all the way up until 5 days prior to your arrival to cancel without penalty. This means if you have a change of plans 5 or more days out from your trip, you can cancel and get a full refund. Again, this only works with Room-Only Reservations and not packages.

Fourth - if you are only choosing to stay at PPH because it appears closer in distance than the Harbor hotels, many folks on DIS will clarify for you that a few of the off-property hotels are actually closer in distance, but you walk in a totally different direction to get to and from the gates. Now, I, personally, always stay onsite at one of the 3 DLR hotels because, for me, it completes the overall Disney experience. But it is not cheap. In fact, as an AP holder, even though great rates are available often times, you have to jump on them and snap them up while they are available, and I have missed out on some good rates here and there by not acting quickly enough.

The PPH is right across the street from the main hub of activity that interconnects DTD, the GCH, the DLH and the entrances to the 2 parks. PPH almost seems like it is on its own little island, but it is not far at all. I think people make a bigger deal out of the walk across the street than is necessary. It seems far at first but then you get used to it. It really IS right across the street (Disneyland Drive). Lots of folks go to the PPH because that is where the Lilo and Stitch breakfast is. What you do is, from the PPH, go out the front entrance, veer to the left, cross the street and cut through the lovely lobby of the GCH and out onto DTD, onward to the parks. That is called "the short cut." It is really a quite pleasant walk that keeps you engaged and in the Disney 'mode' the whole time. If you follow the signs from the PPH to the parks, it will seem like you are walking forever. So use the short cut and it is a piece of cake.

So it boils down to what you want from your DLR experience - if you want to save money and book now, then you may want to just book Hojo's or something else off-property. Tropicana is directly across Harbor from DLR. If you really want to stay at PPH and get the perks that come with being a hotel guest and stay immersed in that Disney feeling, then you can probably get away with waiting until late September/early October to reserve your room before anything books up.

By the way, three out of my last four visits to DLR in the last 2 years have included a stay at PPH (and I have stayed there in past years as well), so in my Trip Report (link below in signature), I share my experiences from last year's October stay (not good) and last year's December stay (very good), which includes photos of the room. Check it out if you can!

When I booked my room at Paradise Pier for my September trip they did not just charge the first night's rate. I'm assuming they changed their policy since they charged the entire three nights (my total stay) to my credit card all at once.

Did you do the 5 nights for the price of 3 deal? If so, I think that may have a different policy. But if it is just the plain old regular Room Only reservations made through Central Reservations for 3 nights only with no tickets or anything else included, I think the policy is still the same. It may have changed, but it seems like someone else on the DIS was just talking about putting down a one-night's deposit, but it was not for any special offer like the 5 nights for 3 deal and it was not for a package.

l'amore bella,

I just called DLR Reservations to find out if they had changed their policy, and the CM I got on the phone, Julie, confirmed what I thought - the straight, Room-Only reservations that are not part of a package and have no tickets attached to them and no '5 nights for the price of 3' deal involved still hold the same policy. You can still put just one night's deposit down and still cancel 5 days in advance for a full refund. Once it becomes a package or a 'special offer' like the 5 for 3, or a "package without tickets" (whatever that is), or has anything else added to it, the policy changes. But if the OP is still interested in getting just a room for a couple/few nights at PPH, and only a room, then one night's deposit is all that is required up front.

Incidentally,a bit OT for a second - Julie the CM told me that they have not received any word yet of any AP rates or special offers extending into October. I know a lot of folks are hoping that special AP rates will come out for October, and she said that they may still come out later, but usually by this time of the year they would have heard of any upcoming AP October rates/offers, and so far they haven't heard anything. So if it does happen and October AP rates are released, it does not appear to be a planned thing as of yet.

Thanks everyone. yeah i know that PPH is farther than a lot of the hotels on harbor with my parents (i've stayed at tropicana, HOJO and fairfield inn) and we stayed at PPH 2 years ago
It's more, we (and our parents), would feel better if we were staying at one of the disney hotels rather than one of the hotels on harbor

We're really hoping to be ablet o stay at DLH but unless her parents agree to that being part of her christmas present adn my parents agree for that to be part of my hanukkah present, i dont think we can manage that

Sherry E--
yes i do have AAA....i am actually planning on calling some time this week to see if they have any rooms with that rate for when we want to go

Hijacking the thread with another question about Paradise Pier. If you make reservations now for in April, 2010, for the room only, will they bill me for a day, and if rates come out that are much cheaper, would I be able to get that rate without being charged a change fee?

Thanks,
Linda

If you make a Room-Only Reservation now through Room-Only Reservations, you will be charged what their computer system currently shows the April 2010 rate to be, and they will ask for one night's deposit (room rate plus 15% tax) at the time of booking. Then you are under no obligation to pay the rest of the amount due in advance unless you want to. You can pay the balance upon arrival. If cheaper rates come out between now and 4/10 (which is highly possible), you can call DLR as soon as you see the cheaper rate and have them switch the reservation to the cheaper rate. As long as this is all done through Room-Only and it is not part of a package or special offer like the 5 for 3 deal, they should be able to make any changes to the reservation with no penalty fee of any kind.

Last year, I made so many changes to my existing DLR holiday reservation - I changed from one rate to another, better, AP rate, I changed hotels from the GCH to the PPH, and I changed my booked weekend dates to one week earlier, all with no charge or penalty. Unless they change their policies between now and 2010, that should be how it works for you!:goodvibes
