papering a locker at school

this morning my dd went to school early in order to decorate a friend's locker. it seems the current middle school custom requires that whenever someone has a birthday her friends have to decorate her locker with wrapping paper, ribbons, etc.


we didn't do this when I was a kid.

Lot's of the kids at my daughter's middle school do this also (dd included).

When I was in junior high, the custom was to bring bows for your friends to wear in school on their birthday. But these bows were worn on your clothes not put on the lockers. Sometimes we would attach candy and gum to the ribbons hanging from the bows, so kids would be walking around with goodies all day, lol.

We did it. As long as it was easily removable it was ok.

We did every year, and all of our friends bought helium balloons and tied them to our backpacks. It soon became a popularity thing of "who had the most balloons on their birthday, who liked them the best" sort of thing. Our school had a limit of 5 balloons or something and cut the rest off after awhile. The balloons stayed in the office until the end of the day.

We also would make a letter of their first inital out of cardboard and cover it in aluminum foil. We'd decorate it with candy so that they could eat it throughout the day.

Come to think of it, I wish I were still in middle school, it was fun!

I can remember "wrapping" lockers and putting birthday balloons in them...and I'm a LONG time out of school!

I have to wonder, though, if there isn't some "secret plot" here.








our big school fundraiser is the wrapping paper sale.

Yes, it is done here at the middle school I work at..

Yes, it was popular when I was in high shcool as well.

Was done at my school, too. Many would also wrap their lockers with Christmas paper during the holidays.

We did it back in my High School and that was in the 70's! Senior year my friends even pasted pictures from Playgirl inside. Needless to say I I had to be careful cleaning that locker out at the end of the year (we would have an inspection by our Dean's at the end of the year). Made sure I scraped that off before my inspection
