Panoramas

More correctly called panograms as I was told, here are two of mine. Does anyone else do these?

I am using Photoshop to merge the individual images (five each in these panoramas) because it is what I am familiar with. Most imaging software should work for this, the difficult part is matching the edges since most lenses have a fair amount of distortion there. By only using the center 1/2 of the images the job is a lot easier.

looking at cameras to buy and some have "stitch assist" for panoramic shots ...do you use that or are you familiar with it? wondering how it works. I really love the panoramic resort shot...really adds something special

Mind my criticism here. The stitching on the first photo isn't great. I could see the seams. The second photograph looks much better.

I seldom do panos. The below is a pano of Vancouver, BC.

Arcsoft has a program Panorama maker that is very easy to use. It does a wonderful job and you can't see where the pictures are joined together.

It is as simple as draggin the images down to a film strip and hitting next.

When you are taking the pictures be sure to allow plenty of overlap.

You missed a spot!
There is some double imaging by the poles on the basketball game (lower right). I certainly don't mind constructive criticism and appreciate the comments of others when it can help me to improve my photography!
The Vancouver image is good, really good! Now I want to go there, so much for my travel budget...


On the earlier Boardwalk scene I was not as aware as I am now about leaving plenty of overlap, and it was very difficult to align things. The 24-85 lens has a lot of distortion at the edges (most do) making it more important to use only the center of each individual image.

The Candlelight Processional scene was taken in December 2005, hopefully I am getting better at this.

I have not found the 'canned' panorama programs to be very good, the few I have tried required more cleanup than by doing it myself. Things may have changed and I would like to see some panoramas that have been done with various software.

sorry to be so ignorant but( since that's never stopped me before ) when you say leave over lap...the camera i think i am going to buy is canon s2 IS which has something they call "stitch assistance"...best i can figure out it basically leaves a kind of ghost image so you can line the next image up...is that not enough to leave or are you doing this "assistant-less"?

i too would like to see more panoramics...and i guess i see the places it is double but the program saftey mom is talking about fixes that? i also need to get a photoshop type program but right now photoshop seems kind of overwhelming to me, ( guess i need to spend more time with it)

also how do you print these? is there any size they need to be or do they fit on regular photo papers? i have a bunch of 4x8 photo cards i got at staples ( $2.50 for ink, 40 papers and envelopes,they were closing out from a package deal for holiday cards ...what a bargain hehe) would they work for that?

My old camera had a panorama assist but never used it. When I am taking the photos I overlap about half so when I am stitching there is plenty for it to match.

this seems hard but maybe cause i am thinking "35mm slr".... i guess it would be easier since you could review the last pic ( unlike normal film cameras)

You can use a tripod and special ball heads designed to take pano shots, but they are very ex*****ve, $200 and up just for the ballhead.
One important thing to remember when doing a pano is to make sure you use the same settings in all the pictures you take, (shutter speed and aperture) and to over lap your pictures.

You can download a program called Panorama Factory free for 30 days. It does a great job and easy to use. I have a program called Stitch Assist that came with my Canon camera.
I made this panorama of Pop Century without the benefit of a tripod.

Start from your far LEFT or far RIGHT and start your paning.

MANUAL settings (ie. shutter, aperature, exposure, white balance and focus). Watch your metering! Otherwise, you will get issues when stitching (like seen in this thread)

DH got a thing called a panoramic mount, some guy designed it and has a machine shop make them. I'm not the camera person, but I think it changes the point of rotation to be the center of the lens, instead of the center of the body of the camera? anyway.. might be something to look into if you are serious about wanting to take lots panoramic photos. I can't get at any of his photos right now, but I'll be sure to show him this thread

on a dSLR, the mount is always at the centre of the lens.

If you want a cheap program that's very easy to use: Canon Photo Stitch. You can find them on eBay.

True, DSLRs do have the tripod mount on the center of the optical axis of the lens but when you try to make panoramas without any paralax error you need to shift the panning axis further up the optical path to the lens' nodal point and away from the film plane. This requires a special panoramic tripod mount.

I've tried them a few times. I took this one of the Grand Floridian from the ferry! I forget what program I used and there's a few minor flaws in it I know but I don't think it's all that bad for not using a tripod and from a moving boat!
