Pandemic?

Those who don't like the way the news is broadcasting the flu have a choice, change the channel.
If reading posts about the flu bothers you, again you have a choice, don't read. We are discussing an illness that may or may not become a pandemic. No one here is panicking. Some are more concerned than others, why would that bother anyone? Seems to me like thou dost protest too much???

I have to admit that I'm concerned :scared:. We are going up to Great Wolf Lodge in Mason, OH and there has been a confirmed case of swine flu in Columbus, OH . I told dh we should cancel our trip, but, he thinks it will be fine :confused3.
What do you think DawnCT1?

Got back. Nothing interesting going on. No panic buying. People still in every store. Restaurants busy.

I think you will be fine. :thumbsup2

It's been my experience that wishing, all by itself, accomplishes absolutely nothing, and pretending an elephant isn't in a room doesn't make it go away, it just makes it far more likely you'll get trampled.
---------------------------------
I agree - wishing can never replace facts.. And as long as those facts are coming from a reliable source, it's wise to pay attention to them.. I don't think anyone is disputing that.. I think the problem lies in how and where people are getting those facts - and how they interpret them.. Kind of like the half full/half empty glass scenario..

I can't agree with the elephant scenario though.. So far I have seen no evidence - or read any facts from a reliable source - that indicate there is "an elephant in the room" right at this very moment.. I think most of us are keeping our eyes open though.. Yes - the swine flu is here - but it doesn't appear that we're even close to being "trampled"' yet..;)

As long as you have a "plan" in place, what else is there to worry about? Is there anything else you can do - other than worry? If so - do it..:thumbsup2

:lmao::lmao:

And to Got Disney, about closing the border with Mexico, some in the worldwide medical community believe this may have actually begun in the US, and been brought to Mexico during Spring Break.

Anyway, 2 days ago was waaaay too late to close the borders. The Americans who caught it while vacationing in Mexico (people in Ohio, NY, WI to name a few) had already been home, and had already exposed everyone on their planes, the airports for each layover, their schoolmates, families, store clerks, etc.

I have not heard anything about them thinking it originated here in the US but anything is possible. And if it started from the spring breakers than we would have had the outbreaks here already prior to the 1600 in Mexico. The spring breakers did not get sick till they returned.

Also they said that in the other countries also that the ill were in contact from travelers from Mexico..not the US.

Never to late to close the borders. If they stop talking about containing it than I'm all for keeping them open. But the CDC should not say we need to contain it and close our schools from 1 outbreak and tell us that if one family memeber gets ill that we all need to stay home within the house....yet keep the boarders open.:confused3

DW is definitely "non-essential", so in my opinion, they shouldn't be allowing anyone in until this we have a better grasp on this thing.

I am no more worried about this flu than regular flu. Maybe if a lot of people are worried, the crowds will be smaller when we go to Disney this summer. Wahoo!:cool1:

The thing is, until the deaths in Mexico City, no one was looking for it. It is very possible that this strain has been passing around the US for weeks or months, causing the very same kinds of mild-to-moderate cases of flu that it is causing now in developed countries. No one would have been looking at the genetic markers to know whether it came from humans or swine or little green men; it would just have been attributed to influenza A, treated as flu, and forgotten. I have read some theories that it started here, but they're conjecture based on reports of flu exhibiting the same symptom pattern and duration prior to the Mexico City outbreak.

experts - virologists, etc - were looking for it. Laurie Garrett stated on Charlie Rose that they had a H1N1 case in Texas in Sept and two in Cal in March and that then they knew they were looking at something going on. She also stated at the same time an H1N1 strain that is not sensitive to Tamiflu also developed. These people were fully tested and there is no conjecture to that. Did local authorities make this mistake, sure. However the experts have been following it.

I think your point though is to say there is no sense in closing the border - and the experts seem to be in agreement with that!:)

not one thing you say here is a correct interpretation of the points i was making. point 1. the media increases our anxiety. point 2. people tend to feed off of each others fears. point 3. worrying about future events cannot have an impact on them. point 4. as they say, this to shall pass. i never said anyone here is panicking. i never said reading the posts bothers me. as far as the statement about protesting to much, that buzz phrase is used when someone complains to cover up the fact that they really like the thing they are complaining about. that would suggest that in your opinion i really like the flu.:lovestruc

There is one point though the media have been hyping this pandemic through the roof. the daily mail has got it that 40% of people in the uk will catch it, when the avian flu first came out the media was blasting that millions of people in the uk would die of it and nothing came of it. If we are not careful there will come a time when a really nasty bug will cause a really nasty amount of death and because of all the panic caused in the past people will ignore advice and it will spread faster than it would need to. Less panic and more facts please.

Amen!

I'm watching one of those National News channels. As predicted...the thoughts are the Mexico numbers are WAY under reported. Basically the people in Mexico who are getting tested are the ones who were sick enough to go to the hospital. The thoughts are the mortality rate is probably closer to what we see with the regular seasonal influenza. That is actually good news. It means most cases in Mexico were probably mild too. We will see deaths here in the US. That is the nature of the beast.

I still want to know more about the drug resistant strain that was mentioned in the Charlie Rose interview.

I haven't read all the latest posts, but maybe it's something to do with plane travel which is lessening the flu's effect on those returning home? Any medicos in the house? :)

Maybe this has already been covered, I did not see it on the pages I read. But, are the "victims" and their families all receiving Tamiflu to stop the spread? It would seem like all the children with the "symptoms" in NYC and everyone in their household should take tamilfu. Are they doing this?

You can get quick swab that would show it was A (I think it would show as A?), and that should warrant the Tamiflu prescription. They can find out if it is swine later. If too late for the patient, then the family should all take it.

We all got the flu shot, DD got a B strain that was not in the shot, and Tamiflu prevented the 3 of us from getting it. Are they doing this??

My thoughts and prayers are with the family that lost their toddler:guilty:

I can't even imagine their pain:angel:

Wondering if the 23-month old from Texas had been to Mexico or if picked it up from someone in the US?

Sad. :sad1:

Not thrilled that DH will be flying on business next week. :rolleyes1 Airports, planes, hotel, convention....oh my.

Also, how long for test results to come back? I'm watching the news and some states are waiting on test results for more cases to be confirmed. Seems like they've been saying that for a couple of days.
