Pandemic?

I guess we're lucky then. I not only got an e-mail from the district, I received and e-mail from my daughter's band director, information in a school e-letter and a letter in the mail all concerning precautions we should take and how seriously the district is taking this flu.

I have recieved 3 calls so far from the Schools Superintenent about what they are doing and a special district # set up for Q&A, updated info. and to notify if your child has been tested positive.

Well, two new cases confirmed in Indiana. In my city.
Two children and they are closing both of their schools for the next week. They haven't mentioned (that I've seen) how they got it.

So my DS comes home from school today and the information that was supposed to be sent home Thursday is still missing, but this could be my DS's fault. Then about 10 minutes ago we get a voice message from the school referring to the packet sent home and what to do if your child is sick. Glad they are finally doing something!

AHHHH those never ending bottomless backpacks will do it all the time....they go in but from there it becomes like cyberspace. Things just disappear:lmao:

Our district is on a phone and e-mail system. Same as the school. If I need volunteers for a important school event I have the front office send out a volunteer phone call to all the parents. If it is just a 6th , 7th, or 8th grade event I phone with the data base I have.

Works great for things like this. Or anything like if they need to notify us of a lock down it comes by both e-mail and phone message. :thumbsup2

I also got a phone message today that if we want to order year books we best get to it because the deadline is in 2 weeks.

Check the school website. Ours has a link on it with updated info. We also got phone calls from the school superintendent keeping us updated.
I have to disagree with this just a little but not much...

The elderly like the young are much more prone to pneumonia which with the flu tends to cause most of the flu related hospitaliations and death and dont recover as easy from it. The flu is a upper respiratory virus. Inhibiting their breathing. They dehydrate much easier from fever and the elderly for the most part do not drink many fluids.

As for immunity to the seasonal flu...there are many many many different flu's each season that go around at the same time. The flu shot covers only what is thought will be the worse virus not all of them. So you can still get a seasonal flu.

The flu shot also does not mean that you will not get the flu that it is meant to keep away..you can still get it but the severity of it will be less and shortened.

many also confuse the flu with the stomach bug known as viral gastroenteritis. The seasonal flu is not in your stomach it is respiratory. Coughing, fever, sneezing, wheezing, aches pains, coughing up junk. It can have nausea from it but that is caused for the most part from the thick mucous being swallowed and not spit up and out. The Swine flu is also a respiratory bug.

The Swine bug has 3 components within it. One of which is human. Yes it sounds alien because it is....but they have aid that their could be some immunity to it due to the human component but they are still not sure. But they are sure that there is no immunity to the other 2 components.

I find it to be an interesting bug. But that's the nurse in me...the mom in me wants it to just go away.....
I must not have stated mine very well, because I don't disagree with any of your points!:) Mainly I was just trying to say you can't put 36,000 deaths on failure to vaccinate.

I find all this very interesting as well, but agree and also want it to just go away!

thank you!:)

Our district is asking anyone traveling to/from Mexico to stay home for a week after their return.

Our district is asking anyone traveling to/from Mexico to stay home for a week after their return.
Interesting request considering that the borders are wide open and people go back and forth regularly. I doubt that most will miss work for a week.

We're not on the border, but many of our students are the children of parents who travel back and forth to Mexico frequently because the companies they work for send them there on business. A lot of those are Mexican nationals and they often take the kids with them so they can visit family. Then there is a decent percentage that moved here from Mexico simply to escape certain things like the kidnapping situation. They moved here, usually set up businesses and are doing that whole "invest enough money and you get on the citizenship track" thing, but they have kept their businesses in Mexico as well. They fly back and forth regularly to monitor their businesses in Mexico and visit family. To be honest, since Mexico City is virtually shut down right now, it doesn't seem as if there would be much to go home to check on.....

It had occurred to me that this might be aimed at people who are just now getting back from visiting Mexico....People who were there when this thing hit and had no idea about it when they left to go to Mexico. But now that they're coming back, the district wants them to keep their kids home for a week just to be safe. I'd be willing to bet the traffic from our district to Mexico significantly declines for a while until everyone gets a better grasp of this. And school is over in just a month.

I am curious as to how many districts in TX and other border states are making this request. Is it a district by district thing or is it a statewide stance? I mean, if it's a border city, 90% of the kids in the US school may be coming from Mexico daily to attend class in the US. In essence, you'd be asking them to miss the rest of the school year.

We're in the north part of Texas and I haven't heard a thing about people coming from Mexico. People I know in Houston don't seem to have heard anything either.

I don't know if the border areas are making any such requests but I have heard that no one is paying much attention at the borders themselves. It's apparently just business as usual except I did hear something about some guards wearing masks.

:thumbsup2 your info was fine just wanted to add a little to it:goodvibes

Every morning that I wake up I turn on the news to see how much more have been confirmed. It seems as time goes on more people are realizing that it is just a Flu and not a third eye that they will get from it.

My boys at school have even told their friends to chill out a little. Some kids parents are scarring the ba-gee-bees out of them.

Thanks for this Dawn. I'm trying to decide if I'm better off getting it now or later, not that I really want it at all, but I want it in the least innocuous way...

I never said not to patronize restaurants. I was venting. I said MY MOM wouldn't let me out of the house. I have an overprotective mother who has a child who is battling with a rare disease and a compromised immune system. If I had my choice I'd be out doing stuff. There's only so much TV you can watch before you go nuts. Even if it is shows you like....

You do have a rare condition and you can't blame your mom for feeling the way she does. It doesn't have to be rational because she is a "mom"! ;):thumbsup2

So there are perfectly healthy people with absolutely nothing to worry about worrying? Now that speaks volumes to me about the lack of information being provided... and it's a shame.

I've been saying all along that the high risk groups should be differentiated because if we were dealt with separately, then the general population would have one set of protocols and others, like us, would have a different set. The way it is now, a shot gun approach of info is coming out and issues that may not apply to the general population are worrying people who don't need to worry. On the other hand you have high risk groups that may be negligent because they are taking the generalized directions to mean they are safer than they really are. WHAT A MESS.

We live in a border town, and no, they're not making that request. However, schools are closing, sporting events are cancelled,. And our newspapers are showing pictures of stores and resturants with virtually no patrons.

If the government does not issue guidelines people are left to make up their own.

Generally speaking, when the masses make up their own rules things tend to go wrong.... as in what seems to be going on in border towns.

Like others have said, it's a mess isn't it.

Media are now reporting:

"The swine flu strain is a H1N1 virus, the same type as seasonal flu which circulates throughout the world every year, and kills roughly 0.1% of those infected or higher in an epidemic year."

Flu hits every year, yet people don't seem to get so worked up do they? Everyone is being worked up into a frenzy and need to calm down a bit.

Our news channels finally started airing some new stories yesterday...granted they weren't all that great (murders, standoffs, etc.) but it's nice to see something else in topic. That said my DH told me that the ER has slowed down too. They are still seeing people coming in thinking they have H1N1, but nothing like Wednesday night when he and another RN triaged 160 people in 8hrs. For our tiny hospital that is quite a LOT!

That sounds unrealistic to be honest.

Here's one source. There are many out there. I'm sick in bed today, so maybe I can dig through microbiology studies in professional publications and find more citations. Lengths of time vary, but are definitely long enough to raise concern.

Research* has shown that flu viruses can survive up to 48 hours on hard, nonporous surfaces and up to 12 hours on cloth, paper, and tissues. Measurable quantities of influenza A viruses can be transferred from stainless steel surfaces to hands for up to 24 hours and from tissues to hands for up to 15 minutes. Virus can survive on hands for up to 5 minutes after transfer from environmental surfaces.

How many cases are we up to in the USA?

The link I was checking doesn't show stats anymore. :confused3
