Palo.....Jackets Required OR Requested???

I walked in on the 12/14 cruise with no jacket and no problems.

No funny looks either. Requested would be a better term.

I agree with Horace. If Disney requests something (like a jacket at Palo, or no shorts or jeans in the dining room) it should be honored.

My husband always wears a jacket simply because that is what is requested so he feels much more comfortable complying with the request. That being said, there are plenty of people there without them and not properly dressed. We were there on the formal night on our cruise in January and I couldn't believe what the couple next to us had on. He was wearing really casual pants with a loud short sleeve button down Hawaiian shirt and she had on casual pants and a polyester polo type shirt. Can you say tacky when everyone else was really dressed up?!!!!

We cruised on the 7 day Eastern Magic Cruise 2 years ago and dressed to impress. Gowns, cocktail dresses etc. Hubby wore a suit for formal night but I was told that the 4 Night cruise has more casual dressers and my hubby is not a "dress up" kind of guy and it's his vacation and I want him to feel comfortable. We certainly wouldn't show up to Palo dressed disrespectfully but I don't think that anyone would think DH was tacky by showing up in slacks and a nice dress shirt and tie if jackets are not mandatory. As for me I'll be wearing my fave Semi Formal "little black cocktail dress" at Palo and maybe at Tritons. The rest of the cruise will be an array of my favorite sundresses while he will wear dockers with a polo and that will just have to be good enough.

The Palo dress question is back on the DIS Board!

I just read a 1/7/04 Magic Navigator (from Barb's website) that reads for Palo:

Suggested Dress: Jacket recommended. No shorts or jeans, please. The key word is suggested and not requested.

We're going on our 4th DCL cruise this fall and we eat at Palo as often as we can. I've noticed that a majority of the men wear a sport coat (with or without a tie) or suit. A few men are seen in tuxes. As for us ladies, I've seen dressy gowns, dresses, and slacks.

No one seems out of place.

What surprised me, though, was to see people at brunch in shorts and flip flops. A no-no in my book!

Whatever you decide to wear to Palo will be appropriate.

Enjoy the best restaurant in the Caribbean!

ITA, the key word is "suggested", not "requested"

On our Magic cruises DH brought along his suit/tie and wore them for "formal" nights and to Palo on our second cruise.

On our recent 4-night Wonder we left the formal clothes at home (did not eat at Palo) and he felt totally comfortable in khaki slacks and a nice polo shirt in the restaurants, even Triton's. MOST men were dressed similarly, a FEW wore jackets but not many.

I am continually amazed by the people who get so bent out of shape over someone not dressing for dinner the way "they" think the people should be dressed. It's VACATION for goodness sake!! Lighten up, people!!! When I am on a Disney cruise I am there to RELAX and ENJOY, not stress over what someone else is wearing to dinner, or not wearing.

Besides, I'd like to "suggest" that Disney lower their cruise prices, but I doubt they will do that any more than EVERY MAN will wear a suit to dinner!! ;)

Actually, I really disagree. Brunch is traditionally a less formal event than dinner, especially on vacation. I think you can choose shorts and a tank top, (eg. Khaki shorts and a dressy black tank) even with flip flops which these days also do not have to look like you bought them to shower in at a campground and look appropriate at brunch. (Can you guess what I wore?) :p

I saw a guy come into Palo wearing a tank top. He was turned away.

Chattyholic -

I don't think it's a matter of people getting 'bent out of shape' over what someone wears to dinner. I think what the issue is, is people getting bent out of shape over some cruisers out there wanting to disregard suggested attire because they CAN and that Disney is not going to say anything.

Yes it is vacation and people are supposed to relax, and I think no one wants that more than DCL.

However her question was if it's requested or required.

Ohhhh, noooooo. This attire would never be appropriate in Palo in my opinion. Not for Champagne Brunch, High Tea, or at any other time.

Palo is way too nice for this regardless of the meal being served!

I always wear a nice pair of Khaki slacks and a button down dress shirt or polo for Champagne Brunch. It makes the champagne taste better, ya know! :teeth:

My DH was hoping to rent a tux from cruiselineformals.com for our 3 day Wonder cruise. We will be celebrating our 5th anniversary at Palo. When I called today to rent a tux, we were informed that they only rent on the 7 night cruises. I must say that we were very disappointed. We hate to rent a tux from home and have to carry it around for a week just to wear 1 night. So I guess he will wear a sport coat and Dockers. I would say as long as you look clean and presentable no one should care!!!

Just have to check where the moon is at this point in time...
Hmmmm yep just about time for another jacket/no jacket/formal/shorts/tank top/khaki slacks slagfest :)

Cheers,
Grumbo

wdwmom, you might want to check out Ebay. My hubby just wears a suit so we don't have personal experience, but I've seen other people post about getting great deals there.

Barb,

I'll check it out. Thanks for the info.

Since you are relatively new here, you will find many, many people add their own opinions to original topics. That is why this is a public board. I answered her question, and gave my opinion. You gave yours also. Same thing.

I totally agree on this one. I can see "brunch" in a hotel, or something like that, but Palo is the equivalent of a $50 a head minimum restaurant and it's nice to have that atmosphere somewhere on the ship, especially as it's a choice to go there.

I will say that I found I couldn't care less as to what others were wearing once on board, other than the "teens and tweens" that were dressed in a Britney fashion at dinner, which I would never have allowed my daughter to dress like - but heck, that turned into a lesson with my DD, so whatever. I'm sure I got looked at funny on Palo night as I walked through the ship in a very formal full length gown (almost TOO full length, as I tripped up the stairs! *grin* So much for classy!!) on a non-formal night...but I felt great wearing it, and it added to my night. And when that couple came in to Palos with matching VERY LOUD HAWAIIAN SHIRTS, I just smiled and enjoyed my night.

Sidenote - I swear that on one of the Navigators I have at home, it says "Jackets REQUIRED" - but on others it says recommended...I'm going to check when I get home. I remember pointing it out and laughing and saying "No wonder people get confused, even they can't figure it out!"
