Even though we're focused on our trip to WDW next month, it's time to start researching DL for next year. We'll be in Palm Springs over the Fourth of July, and are looking to add a few more days to the trip. We were last there about ten years ago, had a good time in DL, but didn't go to DCA at all.

Would it be reasonable to drive to Anaheim for a day, focus on DCA, and then drive back? No kids, no need to do everything, just the headliners. If so, would it make more sense to do it before or after the holiday weekend? How much could we count on seeing? Or would the commute time make it too long a day with too little accomplished?

It's doable. You'd want to get a very early start. Since I often like to stay in the parks late, I'd rather stay the night somewhere close than drive for a couple hours, but you may feel differently about that. I'm not sure if you're better off going before or after the holiday.

I would go before the holiday and stay the night like Cruisehopeful suggested. It is a 2 hour drive with no traffic. Problem is, the least busy parts of just about any day at the parks is going to be right after opening for about 2-3 hours and the last couple of hours in the evening-the later the better. Definitely stick around and check out World of Color. You can do Radiator Springs a few times early, then hit single rider, then get a FP for an evening ride-the best. Toy Story will build a line pretty early and stay at 30-50 minutes depending on the day, hit that early for a few rides. Grab a FP for Soarin. So much to do at CA. When it gets busy, go do Little Mermaid and Screamin. Last trip with my Son, we did Screamin 7 times in a row the first hour the park was open.
