FYI....I just read this on another site:

Effective yesterday, September 22, 2003, Pal Mickey costs a little bit more! The new price to purchase the talking plush tour guide is $56.33 plus tax ($60.00 TOTAL). The rental deposit also increased to $60.00. The daily rental fee remains $8.00 plus tax; the $32 plus tax price for a 4-6 day rental also remains the same.

I can't believe it's already going up before I can get one!

All you DVCers who got the coupon to buy him were very lucky indeed!

I'm pretty ticked off about this. I was going to buy two at $50 each, now I may not even buy one. Might rent for a day or two, but WDW will lose money from me due to the price hike.

Does anyone know if there is a Disney Club discount when buying a Pal Mickey? That's the only way we'll get him now - $50 was expensive to me!

And I thought that $50 was too much for Pal Mickey. Not sure that many of them are going to sell at a higher price. Maybe they got too excited with people rushing to get the first ones?

No Disney Club discount on Pal Mickey that I could find. I was down there a couple of weeks ago, and pretty much the only place that allows the Disney Club discount is World of Disney. Of course, they don't have Pal Mickey...

The different Cast Member reactions to my Pal were very interesting. Some loved playing with him, and I was frequently asked what I thought of him. With other cast members, I was surprised at how much they seemed to dislike him. One of the photographers at the entrance to Disney-MGM actually said, "Pal Mickey, huh? I'm so sorry."

As for me, I really enjoyed him, although my wife got to the point where she just couldn't take another corny joke! :D

Sounds like typical Disney to me. I absolutely can believe that they hiked the price up on Pal Mickey. It was obviously very popular and the Disney head honchos decided to try to get an extra 10$ of pure profit on every single one.

I was already budgeting $50 on my next WDW to buy my child a Pal Mickey. You can bet the farm that I have changed my mind and will not be bowing down once again to the typical Disney greed. This is wrong wrong wrong for Disney to up the price on this item when it was already pricey to begin with. I'm so ******I'm thinking about canceling my whole trip!

Nice talk. Cannot imagine what you will do when the ticket prices increase, or the cost of a hamburger.

Costs go up to make items, they are passed on to you. I doubt Disney will go into a downward financial decline because you don't purchase Pal Mickey.

I had been debating myself for weeks about whether or not to buy one in December. I was NOT wanting to spend ANOTHER $50.00 (just watch my trip costs go up, up up!!!) Yet, it seemed like it might be fun. No matter, now Disney made my mind up for me ;) No WAY would I even consider cancelling my trip over it though  What would there be to gain by that, silly?! Go and have fun *sans* Pal Mickey!

I am sure the technology that goes into Pal Mickey isn't cheap. Infrared sensors (and senders), updatable memory, sound box, etc etc etc. Also they have to maintain hundreds of PocketPC programming stations at every kiosk that sells them (for unlocking/programming them). So PM isn't an inexpensive proposition for WDW.

When we were down there over the summer they certainly were not flying off the shelves - we explained what it was to more CMs than fellow guests. So part of me is wondering if the price hike is just because they aren't selling enough to be able to hit a certain price point.

People need to remember that while Disney is in the magic business - it is still a business. If they didn't make money do you think we would have the parks to go to in the first place?

If you think Pal Mickey is expensive - they have a rental program in place for that exact reason. Honestly that is probably the better option all around especially if you don't get to WDW that often.

Don't patronize me. And who are you to comment with "nice talk"? The fact is if Michael Eisner walked up to me to shake my hand I'd probably knock him out. Eisner has ruined more than a little of the Disney magic with his greedy ways. And I doubt there are few that would disagree with me.

As for the cost of materials increasing, they have not increased enough, if any, in the short amount of time Pal Mickey has been on the market to justify a $10 or 20% increase. And your comment about hamburgers was unwarranted, unwanted, and unjustified.

Disney may not go into a downward spiral financially if I don't buy a Pal Mickey, but I guarantee they will not make near the amount of money at $60 a pop as they would at a barely tolerable $50.

A quick reminder that the DIS is a family site and the language should be appropriate. While I'm at it, arguing is against the DIS posting guidelines, so please refrain from arguing so that this post doesn't get closed.

I'm sorry. I certainly didn't post this info to start a fight! I just thought people who had trips coming up soon might want to know the scoop on Pal Mickey.;)

It is great information to have, Beattyfamily.

It most definitely is. Now I can mark Pal Mickey off my list of things to buy. Thanks for making my decision easier!

Ug.
My next trip is going to be TIGHT, and I was hoping to get $50 set aside for a pal mickey. But well, now I won't.
This just stinks. It was too expensive already.

As for me and my group, we will be buying 3 of them (at least :) ) in December and my mom already has one. I got her's from an "unofficial" reseller of Disney themepark merchandise on-line when they first came out and gave it to her as a gift. Funny... looking back, I didn't get such a bad deal after all! I think it was $66 with the shipping. Of course, now that same site is selling them for $100!! So since I've already paid more than $60... I guess it won't bother me at all. He is absolutely adorable :earsboy: I would probably pay alot more... haha

While the material costs may not have increased $10 --- they may have underpriced him in the first place.

$60.00 for something you can use every trip isn't much in the long run...it is a lot the first time, but then again, so is an annual pass.

Maybe the $50 was just an introductory price ... just to get some Mickey's out there ... and now comes the price Disney needs to support the product in the long term.

I'm wondering if these current ones that are selling for $60 are in any way better than the ones they sold for $50. Could it be that they upgraded the electronics inside or something?
