padlocking suitcases

just returned today, we bought our samsonite locks from premium outlets in florida, these are combination locks, with the added feature that if anyone has access, the green light turns to red.
We bought these as our cases have been opened in the past, and we were checking our luggage in at DTD, early in the morning. As our airline carrier were taking our luggage to the airport for us. Just added security on my behalf

Hot tip: if you can check in at DTD early then your cases will be the last to get on the plane, and first off! We checked in about 9.30 am and there were only about a dozen cases off before ours. :cool1:

My padlocks arrived yesterday, they had run out of the combination locks and weren't restocking them before our holiday. I was unsure about the padlocks but they are sturdier than I thought they would be, just have to try and keep the key safe ...... :flower:

Thanks for that Piglet, I've just ordered some but just to point out to anyone else who got confused, the web address above was mis-spelled. The correct address is:

http://www.outdooraccessories.co.uk/

I meant to post back earlier in the week that speed of delivery was excellent and the padlocks arrived a couple of days later.

I know padlocks are only a minor thing but it's just one less thing to worry about now knowing that if my bags are searched they'll be securely locked up again.

To lock or not to lock this is the question.

I am concerned about something being put in to my case or things being pinched out of it. Cable ties are not an option because we have those hard bodied cases with locks and there isn't anywhere to use padlocks on them.

I cannot believe that they search through every single bag. Those of you who have had bags searched did you have mechanical objects in the bag as opposed to just clothes?

Thanks. :)

They don't search through every bag - at least that's not our experience. We normally have two suitcases, plus a golf bag. It's normally at least one that has been searched, but it hasn't ever been all. However, the golf bag has been subject to search, and although it sometimes has some extra clothes stuffed in, it hasn't had any mechanical item.

My last trip was 7 bags for the three of us and 4 were searched. Two of these were just clothes - nothing mechanical or electrical.

Also HM Customs were being very vigilant - but this may have been because it was a MIA flight and they were looking for drugs.

When we returned from Orlando Int'l in January, we checked in and were asked to deposit our luggage with the customs officials (off to one side of the check-in desk area).

We asked if we should remove our padlocks before leaving them and a very nice guy told us that leaving any padlocks on was fine - he then handed us one of our padlocks, with a smile - which he had removed without us noticing at all while chatting! He put the lock back on and informed us that if they needed to check our cases, they would just help themselves! Our cases were then given their "seal of approval" and sent through the back. Once arriving home, we realised that out of 12+ cases in our party, none of them had been opened. :goodvibes

Thanks for the replies. I think I have resigned myself to leaving them unlocked.

Or get some TSA approved locks and if they open them (as they have done with ours) they re lock them up.
No biggy

Suitcases cannot take padlocks no where to fasten them.

How about a lockable luggage strap?

We have two Samsonite cases (one purchased to take our new clothes in Orlando :guilty: ) which have combination locks as well as keys, plus two with just combination locks.

On the way out there was nothing valuable so no biggy. On the way back we put all the older dirty washing in the combination cases and newer stuff, souvenirs etc in the Samsonite cases. We used keys only (no combinations) as TAA can open locks but not combinations. Ours weren't searched as far as we know but we felt happier knowing anyone trying to knick stuff would find our dirty undies - and serve them right :rotfl:

Thanks Mazda, have you seen any about? I have only seen clip types. :wave2:

Wicket2005, try googling for Samsonite suppliers. We got one in a luggage shop in Bluewater and one at a Samsonite outlet in Orlando - I think there's one at Festival Mall. (Like I said, we took slightly past-it stuff to Orlando - its going to get covered in icecream and ketchup anyway if you're travelling with kids, and hopefully you're not going to flash your undies  - and ditched it as we wore it - save washing and make room for new stuff :Pinkbounc )

Thanks Mazda. I read on another forum that someone had chocolates taken from their case and someone else's dirty underwear added. How yuck is that?
