Packing toiletries

I just wanted to get an idea of what people are doing. I have NO PROBLEM at all with this ban and don't really care if it lasts forever. We will all adjust. Anything that makes my family safe, I am all for it.

So here is what I was wondering. I will not pack my toiletries in my checked luggage because my stuff always leaks. No matter how many ziplocks I put it in, it leaks. I usually carry in on with me in a bag that stands up the entire time on the plane and it still leaks! :rotfl: So packing in the checked luggage is not an option. We are planning on sending a box down before us anyway so I was thinking about maybe packing my stuff in there. However, it will most likely leak in there as well since the box will be thrown around. So my other option and the one I am leaning towards is to just buy everything that I need down there. So what is everyone else doing?

I am not sure why your stuff always leaks, that makes no sense, but...

Are you taking the "whole" sizes from your bathroom or "rebottling" into some cheap bottles?

If so, find a camping supply store (REI is good) and buy some GOOD bottles, it makes a huge difference.

(As to shipping it, it could get flown so it still might leak)

I was amazed to see how many full size bottles they showed tossed at airports yesterday. My trips average 2 weeks and I don't go through the medium size containers of shampoo, conditioner, etc during that time.

If you are really concerned, you could use the USPS flat rate box ($8.35 for anything regardless of weight, so long as it fits in the box) and ship to your hotel. If you bring a box and preprint a label with postage, and arrange a pickup FROM your hotel before you return home, you could also ship the items home.

But then, I have never had any leakage either. I currently use a $1 toiletry kit from Ikea to pack my makeup and toiletries, plus a striped 'ziploc' lunch bag from Ikea for the overflow (I bought an expensive leather Dopp bag which never gets used due to weight)

Sorry, if this has been on a thread somewhere, and I may have missed it, but I was wondering if anyone besides me is picturing the Disney hotels with boxes from the floor to the ceiling with people sending stuff down instead of flying with it? I wonder if this could become a problem for the hotels. your thoughts?

Mary, convention hotels are used to tons of boxes being preshipped for meetings; most are much larger than a box of toiletries (We ship five large trunks for work every trip, for example)

I have worked with the convention staff at CSR before - they are very efficient. I suspect that there may be a 'package receiving fee' put in place for leisure travellers if the number of boxes gets to be too large, whcih would cover a storage space and servicing the space.

Last year I had to postpone and utlimately cancel my CSR stay; the convention staff even sent back my box for free, an unexpected service!

another suggestion i read somewhere on the DIS (won't help w/the leaking problem) is to put all toiletries in a small bag and check it without a DME tag... while one member of the traveling party goes to check in for DME, the other goes to the baggage carousel and retrieves just that one bag...

Thanks for the great info. It's funny that I feel like I am inconveniencing the resort by sending a box to them. It does seem so nice of them to hold people's personal stuff. I know, it's silly of me...

 Ok, so apparently I am the only freak that has problems with leaking. Yes, I do take full size bottles, I guess I should re think that and go get myself some good bottles. But what about things like my eye make-up remover (which is liquid) and things like that. Maybe I will just ship that. :confused3 I am staying at SSR so I am not to terribly worried about them having a problem with packages getting more and more. I would think that at this time they would understand it.

Kristine, why not look at alternatives? I was just unpacking a suitcase earlier today, and here are some 'solids' I already own

- nail polish remover clothes
- anti bacterial cloth wipes
- eye makeup remover wipes
- Olay face cleaning wipes
- Clinique Chubby stick (pencil lipstick/not lipliner)
- Basin solid shampoo cake

I even found a perfume sample from L'Occitaine which was sealed bwn two pieces of paper, which I doubt would be considered a gel or liquid.

There are lots of solid alternatives around if you are worried about leaks

I, too, am wondering why your stuff is leaking. We always check our bags with all our toiletries, etc. I never do a carry on, so this ban isn't going to affect me at all. However, I've never had anything leak in the suitcase. I do put the stuff in a ziplock bag, just in case, of course, but so far - no leaking.

I'm also curious to find out why you have the leaking problem. I never use a carryon always put toiletries in zip lock bags in my checked luggage no leaks ever.

I am not sure why I am having this problem either. But it is not my typical things that are leaking. My face wash, shampoo, things like that are not leaking. But my eye-make-up remover does and my roll on deodorant ALWAYS does. I cannot use an alternative for that though because I would be lost without my certain dri.

But I guess I am the only one with this problem so I need to figure out why that is. :teeth:

Connorlevismom,
You are not the only one with the "leaking" problem!!! After a few bad experiences, we now never check our toiletries either. The items we found to leak the most were my lotion and Dh's shaving cream..I too usually pack full size items so maybe that is the culprit. Oh well...I guess its time to find a solution to our leaking problem as it looks like checking toiletries is going to be the easiest solution to the new carry on restricitons....which by the way, I am OK with!!!!

Your DEODORANT leaks? that is a new one to me! no idea why. Have you considered those 'soft solid' ones which are sort of creamy consistency?

are you flying within the US? on a regional jet, or larger aircraft? Do you overstuff your luggage?

(Frankly, I don't know why I am asking; I fly all kinds of countries, all types of aircraft, and sometimes I overstuff my luggage, and still no leakage.... you just have me curious!)

I think that full-sized products are more likely to leak than travel-size, because the travel-size ones tend to be only partially-filled.

If you are filling your own containers, never fill them up completely, and always squeeze a little of the air out (but not all) before closing them. Snap-top containers are far more likely to leak than those that screw shut. (And that means a hard screw-top, not one that is soft enough to bend with your hand.) Nalgene bottles are the best for preventing leaks in rough conditions.

Anyone else buying stock in the makers of zipper plastic bags today? ;)

Can't help you with the deoderant leaking, but for the eye makeup remover this might work. Open the bottle, place a layer (or two, depending on how thick the plastic is) of plastic wrap or a plastic bag over the bottle opening, screw the lid back on tight! Looks a bit ugly, but helps to keep the lids from leaking.

Are you using Clinique Eye make-up remover? That's the only item I have ever owned that leaks in its own bottle... go figure!

I usually do pack my toiletries in my checked luggage. I have a toiletries bag that is plastic lined and nothing has ever leaked outside of my bag onto the other items in my suitcase. The only thing I have ever had leak was a small bottle of Bath & Body Works shower gel. Both times it happened it was my fault. I thought I had the pop up lid pushed all the way down but I didn't as it was opened just a little. It made the other bottles in my toiletries bag a little sticky but no biggie.

Oh thank god! There is someone as whacky as me out there! :rotfl: Seriously though, if you find something that works let me know! :thumbsup2

Certain Dri is a roll on which is liquid inside so it leaks out. I am not willing to budge on my deodorant choice. It is the only thing that works like a charm and does not leave any white spots! :thumbsup2
