Packing food in your checked luggage or mailing it to resort?

Has anyone done this successfully recently?
I just read on another site, that it makes the bomb detectors go off???
We are only bringing little cereals and gummy things for the parks for a sweet tooth.
Should I mail them to the resort instead?
Is there a problem doing this?

I "ALWAYS" pack breakfast and snack items......ie...small boxes of cereal, muffins, fruit snacks, crackers and cheese, granola bars and pop tarts.

Why not just pick them up as you go. Mailing is very expensive and I doubt if you will save any money by mailing. Adding the extra weight to your luggage, could put you over the 50 pound limit per bag and you could have an added fee making your gummy bears very expensive.

We don't rent a car and whenever we have used Mears or this time using ME there is no grocery stop. We have never gone over the 50 pound mark.

That was my plan for this time also. We are on the dining plan, but wanted to have things for in between meals and breakfast foods. I was going to pack cereal (buy milk there), granola bars, pop-tarts, snacks. Then, I figured I could use the extra space in the luggage for souvenirs on the way home. We are renting a car a few days later to go to Sarasota, but I don't want to waste prime Disney time trying to make a grocery run. Did it work for others to pack snacks?

We allocated one of our checked pieces of luggage just for snacks and drinks and made sure that it was under 50-lbs. The snacks and drinks came in handy late at night in the hotel or early in the morning when there was a snack craving.

At the end of the trip, we had an empty piece of luggage to use for souveniers and other things that we bought during the trip.

We had no problems at the airport.

That is what I do..... This way your not craming at the end of your trip or buying an extra bag.....

We have packed food in the past. If you have the luggage space, do it.

It is a HUGE money saver.

It would be cheaper to ship most things (probably not water though) than it would be to buy it in the resorts, or have it shipped.

We have actually checked a rolling plastic cooler with a strap to keep it closed as one of our airline bags in the past. It worked well.

If you are renting a car you can buy food once you get there, but if you are taking ME and won't stop outside the resort on the way in, bring it with you.

It seems to me that having food in the luggage has triggered an inspection of the contents. We always take boy scout popcorn to gramdmas, and sometimes candy, and that suitcase is the one that gets opened.

Food often triggers the detectors, so I pack it all in a separate small suitcase that folds flat, so when they open it that is all that is in there. When returning I either place the bag into one of my other suitcases or have a bag for all the things I'm purchasing there. We are a family of four, we get to check 8-12 bags depending upon the airline--we take three plus the "snacky case" so we are well under the limit.

I am mailing a pkg of food down on Monday. It will be about 7-10lbs through fed-ex and only cost about $8.00. It will take 4 days to get there via fed-ex ground. You can get a quote on their website.

Well that has helped. Thanks everyone.
I was going to mix the food into each luggage, but it does make more sense to do a seperate one.
Perfect!
I love you guys! :flower:

I believe we are going to ship a box of dry goods for our trip. DS snack packs and cereals will be light enough and will save us lots of money.

We always pack food. My son is hungry the minute his eyes are open and is a grump until he's fed! We pack cereal, snackbars and a case of bottled water spread out in our three suitcases. We are water drinkers and it's $2.50 a bottle in the park. It doesn't usually last the whole trip but it helps!

This also forces us to save packing room for all the souveniers we have to bring home!!

We just got back and did the following: packed a large suitcase full of cereal, granola bars and such. For the perishables such as milk, juice, yogurt and bottled water we put in an order with WeGoShop. They were prompt in delivering it (even before the hurricane hit). Bell services will even deliver it to your room if you want. It's pretty convenient.

Hope you have a great time ....

Is it better to bring a couple large boxes of cereal or a bunch of mini-boxes?
Won't items like cereal get crushed?
If we get the mugs at our resort can we just get milk for cereal in our mug each day?
Is there a way to get plastic silverware, mainly spoons, at the Pop Cen. for free, can you just grab them in the cafeteria? How about plastic bowls and cups?
Is carrying food in luggage legal? (stupid question I know but was wondering)
It is my wife and I and we are getting the dining plan and just want to bring like cereal and muffins for breakfast, any other suggestions?

i have never sent food in my checked lugguage but i have brought food in my carryon and shipped food to the resort. my fear with the checked lugguage is that the bag would be squished or the water would open and ruin my lugguage or worse..someone elses. last year we put the food in our carryon that had wheels and we took a case of mini waters, juice boxes, donuts, poptarts, and other snacks. it was great as another poster said to have the empty bag for souvenirs and it save us so much money.

the times i shipped the box, i used UPS and the box was around 23 lbs and cost only $14 to send. i had my niece and nephew with me and wasn't getting a rental car so i sent everything from peanut butter & jelly, to juice boxes, to cookies, to potato chips. shipping also allowed me to take a large box of cereal, styrofoam bowls, napkins, spoons, etc. the only cost at the resort was for milk everyday. it not only saved money, it also saved time and a huge headache over trying to please 2 very picky eaters.

Yes, you can get plastic utensils at the food court. I have never seen any bowls out to grab though. You might want to pack some. That's what I have done in the past. No milk in the mugs though. You can buy a carton of milk there....big enough for several bowls of cereal. I always pack one big box of cereal....then pack clothes around it. The only thing I won't pack is bread. No possible way to keep that safe..outside of putting it in a Tupperware container!!!

Do you get a fridge in your room or just buy milk everyday?
I'm suprised you can't get milk in the mugs, what if someone wants to drink milk? What if someone wants milk in their coffee?
