Packing Food in Luggage on Airplane

i haven't packed food for wdw but for hawaii several years ago when we went
had a condo and wanted to fix 2 meals a day. packed mac & cheese, frozen egg beaters, frozen bagels, canned chicken, powered milk, canned spaghetti sauce, frozen summer sausage, noodles, can't remember what else but had the makings for casseroles and breakfast. didn't worry about the refrigerator items because i had froze them.

We use to fly with an ice chest. Actually took Blue Bell to a friend in NYC many years ago. :teeth: Haven't used it since 9/11 because the straps DH secured it with prevented it from being searched. Now the hard-sided Samsonite gets all the snacks - cereal, snack bars, etc. I put everything in bags so the security guys can rummage around easily. I also pack 6 empty water bottles. We fill these at the hotel and reuse them during our stay, then put them in the recycle can before we head home.

Terry - We aren't too picky about water and will take anything except Dasani (yuck) so we usually just tell them to get the Wal-Mart brand of bottled water, because it's cheaper and tastes fine to us. We do have other things that we are picky about brands for (peanutbutter and yogurt, for example) and they are always good about getting us exactly what we want. The key is to give a detailed list with sizes, brands, quantities, etc.

As for the water, maybe you could email them and ask what brands of bottled water are available there. They've always reponsed to our email questions in a very prompt and friendly manner.

I don't think you'll be disappointed if you give them a try. We cant' say enough good things about his company, or about the couple that runs it in the Disney area. With a baby along for the trip, it's really a life saver!

I don't reccomend packing food in your checked luggage mostly because it WILL get searched

We always pack food, a separate suitcase just for food, and we never had a problem at the airport. I usually bring a 10 packs of Capris drinks, taken out of the cardboard box and scattered around the suitcase for weight distribution ;) , granola bars, Little Debbie snacks, CheezeIts, water, ...hmmm I can't remember what else. It's funny because we always take a grocery stop from the airport, but we still pack all the food. I guess it's part of the vacation ritual.

I packed all our cereal, snack, etc (no liquids!) in a standard "carry on"
size rolling case. I am planning to check it, not worried if they do search it
cuz I only packed food in that piece, if a mini bag of pretzels goes astray,
no biggie, and like the other posters have said, the empty case will be
perfect for bringing back prizes! :cool1: 2 weeks from this very moment
DH :smooth: and I will be leaving for the airport!!!!! :cheer2:

I always pack "snacky" stuff amongst the clothing in our luggage. I am just careful to put it all in ziplocs. Usually stuff like Goldfish, peanut butter crackers, fruit snacks, granola bars. I did pack Nutrigrains on our last trip and they got crushed. I guess I didn't pack them very well!

My questions is:

Doesn't packing bottled water and other heavy things make it weight too much? What's the suitcase weight limit (I'm on SW)??

SW allows each passenger up to 3 bags weighing up to 50 pounds each. For each bag over 50 pounds there is a $25 and up charge. It does not make much sense to me that they would charge extra for 1 55 pound bag versus 3 50 ponnd bags but that is what they do.

If you do curbside check-in, it is unlikely that they will actual weigh the bag and if they do, it would be done after you check it so they are not going to track you down for the money.

When we were returning from the Disney Wonder we checked our bags curbside at MCO. Our largest case was over 50 lbs so the skycap and DH stuffed a bunch of clothes into a trash bag type container. It survived the flight, but my brand new, purchased for the trip Disney Jammies were missing......

On our last trip my daughter bought one of those plastic tubes that you use the dispenser to fill with powdered candy. They have them at The Pop Century gift shop.

Don't take anything like this!!!!!

She put it in her carry on bag to have as a treat on the plane. We got through the airport alright but when she gave it to me throw out on the plane the airline stewardess's froze and gave each other one of those looks and I knew right away that something was wrong. They questioned me up about what it was why I had such a thing and told me to never, ever take anything like this on a plane again. :earseek: Boy did I feel stupid.
I was however thankful when I think of what could have happened at the airport if it had been mistaken as a "suspicious item"

Confused about this candy thing. Can you describe it a bit more? Why was it a problem? I'm probably just being dense, but I don't get it..

Thanks for this thread, it is very helpful! I am going back and forth about whether to bring our snacks in a suitcase and check it on the plane, or to ship a box down... We are going to use wegoshop in December for sure though since we'll need perishable stuff then.

B&B Mom-WOW, thanks for sharing! There's a chance we will be bringing that candy home, my boys were interested in it last trip. I guess it was an issue because of the shape of the tube...maybe they consider it to be something that can be used as a weapon?? I never would have thought that!

Just wanted to say that we've done curbside check in at many different airports around the country - and we've almost always had our bags weighed and we have been charged extra more often than not. Sometimes they have a scale to weight them right there at the curbside place, and sometimes they ask us to wait while they take them inside and weigh them if they think they are too heavy. They have gotten much more picky about this in the last year or so. So, please don't plan on packing a heavy suitcase and getting around the fee by doing curbside check in, beause it sure hasn't worked that way for us! I'd hate to see anyone get stuck paying money they hadn't budgeted for.

It's a slender plastic tube that comes in different lengths depending on how much candy you want. It's kind of like a big straw that you can fill yourself with the different flavours of powdered candy. I guess it looked like the kind of container one might use for....well...explosive stuff so i was told.
