Packing cubes

I have packing cubes and packing folders in all sizes and actually prefer the packing folders to the cubes, but use both every single trip. I can put 9 days worth of shorts and tshirts into an 18" packing folder that fits perfectly into one side of my Heys spinner carry on. My husband wears alot of thicker cargo shorts, so I can't get quite 9 days worth of his clothes into an 18" packing folder, but can usually get 7 days worth. I use a slim cube for his underwear and then another slim cube or small packing cube for my underwear and bras. I then use an Eagle quarter cube for small miscellaneous items. All of this will fit easily into two carry ons. If we are checking a bag, I may pack his clothes into a 20" packing folder.

I just got back this past weekend from WDW. In my carryon I had eight pairs of shorts and eight tshirts in a 18" packing folder, two pairs of flip flops, a white noise machine, a small cube with 7 prs panties and 7 bras, and an Eagle Creek half cube with chargers and a few miscellaneous items in it.

Hi, guys! For those that have used packing cubes/folders, will you tell me more about them? Are they simply for organizing your clothes (i.e. putting all your t-shirts together), or do they truly save space in your suitcase?

I've always been a "roller" when it comes to packing. I find that you can fit in more clothes if you roll them rather than folding them. I've tried Travel Space Bags in the past, but found they don't seem to save me any room compared to rolling my clothes (plus the clothes seemed to get wrinkles in space bags). I actually did a "test pack" with space bags versus rolling (with the exact same clothes) and ended up with my tried-and-true rolling method.

So, please sell me on the benefits of using packing cubes/folders!! Thanks for the info!!

See my above quote. I love my 18" packing folders (and 20" packing folders if checking a bag)--don't use the 15" ones much though. I have a 21" Heys Exotic spinner that I frequently use for a carry on (this one: http://www.overstock.com/Luggage-Ba...side-Spinner-Luggage-Set/3444035/product.html). This is a different picture that shows the inside of the carry on: http://www.ebags.com/product/heys-u...inner-luggage-set/211716?sourceid=ONLTELLPT2: ) An 18" packing folder fits perfectly in the area on top (behind the middle zippered divider part that snaps in place). I can put 9 days worth of shorts and t shirts in that 18" packing folder, clip it into the upper half of the carry on and still have the entire bottom half of the carry on empty to put other stuff in (the half that has the x shaped security straps showing in the picture). A small cube or slim cube holds underwear and bras and a quarter cube holds miscellaneous stuff. Flip flops slide into the ends, next to the packing folder or into the lower half of the carry on. I even have room for my white noise machine and a small makeup bag, with a little room left over. In the past I've tried zip locks, compression bags (where you squeeze the air out), rolling, and the bundle method of packing. No way I've ever tried packing was as easy as using my packing folders and cubes. Those cubes and folders look small when you get them, but believe me they hold alot. I always overstuff them. As long as you can get the velcro to catch on the packing folders they will hold, nor have I ever broken a zipper on a packing cube and I use them 4-6 times a year. Between my 21" Heys carry on and a personal item (usually a soft, small Vera Bradley duffel or a large Vera Bradley backpack, I can pack for a nine day trip without having to check a bag and still have a little room left over in my carry on (and I am definitey pooh size:rotfl:).

When I start packing, I match all my shorts and tees into outfits, then use the guide that comes with the packing folder to fold them neatly into the packing folder in the opposite order that I will be wearing them, so the oufit for day 1 winds up on top, with the outfit for day 2 next, day 3 next, and so on. When I get to the room, I just slide the clothes out of the packing folder onto the shelf in the closet and the outfits will be folded neatly, in the order that I'll be wearing them, so I just have to grab the top outfit every morning. The packing cubes that have bras and panties in them, I just place in the drawers. I always carry a couple of extra packing cubes with me. Every night when I get in from the park I use the packing guide and pack the dirty clothes back into the packing folder and roll up the dirty underclothes and put them in a packing cube. By the end of the week, just about everything is repacked and squished flat--makes repacking that last day a breeze. Just drop the folders and cubes back into the carry on and repack the toiletries out of the bathroom. I can be packed and out of the room in about five minutes and don't have to worry about leaving anything down there. Packing folders and cubes save me space, organize my bag, and make packing, unpacking, and repacking so easy. I'll never go on a trip without them.
