Packing baby food

We are taking a week's worth of baby food for my son with us on our cruise next week. I vaguely remember reading somewhere that food items must be carried on. It would really help us (with space, weight, etc.) if we could put his 35 jars of baby food into a checked bag. Does anyone know the policy on this? We would obviously pack it carefully either way, in order to assure it arrive unbroken.

Are you flying or driving? I think that the airlines want you to carryon food b/c it confounds the security systems which means your bags are likely to be searched. I don't think it matters as much for DCL, though I think they screen your bags also. Call them & ask. There are a few grocery stores on the way to the port (in Orlando & Cocoa) so you bring just a little & could buy the rest of the baby food in town & not have to carry it. Dave's web site www.dcltribute.com says there is a Publix off I-95 on the way to the port. (see the page on details of the Pt. Canaveral area)

On the contrary, the airline has no problem with us checking it.
Since posting this thread, I have contacted DCL by phone, and they are requiring us to carry it on. This truly stinks, since we will have the baby, the stroller, and only 4 hands. The food will take up more than half of the 1 carry on bag we planned to take. We will now have to have another carry on, which will prevent us from being able to bring on beer and pop, as we had planned, because we simply can't carry it all. Oh well.

We will further try to limit what we are carrying now by not packing dinner clothes in our carryons. In the event our luggage is not delivered in time for us to dress for dinner (which has happened before), we will just skip it.

According to Disney, the food needs to be x-rayed, which is why it has to be in the carryon. I don't understand why x-raying the food would be more important than anything else that is being brought on board in checked luggage.

We cruised twice in my youngest son's first year of life. And it took me 34 years to cruise....

It is my understanding that the waitstaff will bring you what you request for your baby. For instance if you want some steamed carrots or mashed potatoes, etc. they will try to get you what you need. Maybe you could get by with not taking so much baby food. It really is a dream to have someone cook for you for days so take advantage of the convenience and request what you want for your baby.

Anyway...have lots of fun. I swear my little guy recognizes Mickey because of his trips on DCL and WDW when he was 12 weeks and 8 months!!!

Just a suggestion, but you could pick up one of those luggage totes for about $10 at Penney's or Rich's... put your soda and beer on the bottom (to create a "base" of sorts), then strap on the carry-on bag with the food. It might make it easier to manage...and you'd still get to take your beer and soda.

Also, like the other posters stated...if your son can eat "big people food" that has been prepared for him (i.e. the mashed or steamed carrots, peas, mac and cheese, etc)...why not take some food as a back-up and let DCL do the cooking. :)

Good luck!!
