I live about an hour southeast of Atlanta, so we always drive to Orlando (9 hour trip). I am in the beginning planning stages for a trip in December 2009. When it comes time to book would I be better off price wise to purchase a package without air or just purchase tickets and make hotel reservations separately? We don't know if we will do the DDP.

If you are not yet sure I would just book your room as a room only reservation. You can sort out whether or not you want to switch to a package with dining and whether to do the air fare with the package later. This way you have your room. You can convert to a package up until 5 days before your arrival day. (If you have AAA try to get that discount, also try watching to see if any other discounts become available. www.mousesavers.com is a good site to look for discounts. Don't forget to watch the WDW website they have an affordable vacation section as well.)

From the research I have done for our upcoming trip, it is cheaper if you do everything separately. You can find room-only discounts, purchase tickets from outside retailers, etc. These things WILL save you money.

However, if you want the dining plan, the only way to get it is by either purchasing room, tickets and meal plan as a package deal (of course if you plan on going during free dining, that IS a bargain!!) OR you can do what we are which is rent points from a DVC member, buy tickets outside of the park and you CAN get the dining plan without a package.

Doing everything separately does take quite a bit more research, planning, etc. but the deals are out there if you look for them. On the other hand, a package does simplify a lot and your time is valuable too.
