Owning Points at Multiple Resorts

I notice that many that post on these boards own points at multiple resorts. I am wondering what additional benefits this buys you? I understand that you can only make reservations 11 months in advance up to the amount of points you have in your home resort. Thus, why own at multiple resorts? Thanks. Your insight is appreciated.

I own at HH and BCV for exactly the reason you described. I want to be able to have an 11 month reservation window in order to make sure I get those resorts at the specific times I want them. It's very hard to get HH in the summer without the 11 month advantage. And I like to own a WDW location as well. Oh, I just added 100 points at AKV - again, in order to have the 11 month advantage.

So you can get difficult ressies at more than one resort. Many do it as part of a plan to increase the number of points they own anyway. May as well have more than one option rather than just one option with more points.

It really depends on what you own and what you're trying to get. Ideally you'd like to own at resorts you want to reserve to use or rent and use those points to reserve at 11 months out. There are several strategies for handling more than one home resort when you don't have enough in one resort for a given stay. These options include booking a split stay a 11 month out at the resorts you own at then trying to change over as desired at 7 months. If you don't get it, you still have a trip but you might have to change resorts mid stay. And you can ride the wait list until the last minute. The other main approach is to bank and borrow for the points at a given resort so you can book everything at 11 months out. The strategy for owning one resort and wanting another is very similar in principle.

Our situation is/was this.

We bought OKW when it was the only DVC property and usually stay there during the Spring or Summer.

We then wanted additional points so we bought VLW for the ability to book it during the Holidays, and AKV because we love the resort.

If DPVillas ever materialize, we may have to double our points!

You're assuming I would always want to have a full reservation at just one resort, but that's not the way we like to use our DVC points. We actually LIKE several different resorts and we PLAN to move throughout our stay, so not being able to book a full seven days or whatever at one resort doesn't bother us. In fact, it fits nicely with our particular preference.

If you go for xxx days and only want to stay at one resort, then your point about the waitlist is a good one, and the answer to your question is yes - you will have to waitlist if you don't have enough points for a full stay at your home resort.

People want to be able to secure a reservation at a particular resort and in order to do so they must have the 11-month home resort booking window.

I want a better chance of getting VWL at Christmas, BCV and/or BWV during the F&W festival. Thus, I purchased points at those resorts. This won't guarantee me a reserrvation, but it does guarantee that when I do try to book at the 11-month window, I am only competing with other owners and not every single DVC member to get a prime reservation.

I believe the 11 month booking window has become very important, particularily because of the rapid increase in the size of DVC membership.

We have 200 points at wlv and 150 at bcv, and now 150 at akv. So if we bank all of the bcv ones this year, we have 300 bcv points for next year. And we borrow 150 akv points from next year and we have 300 akv this year. So we go to WLV and AKV this year and WLV and BCV next year. It never really works out that way for us, though, but the idea is there.

Slightly off topic but I didn't want to start a new thread as I'm sure this question has been asked a million times.

I know when you buy DVC you have a home location for your purchase. What is involved in using your points at another location? Is it basically that you don't have as much of an advance window to book the other locations?

I'm kinda thrown that the points are for a particular property, but they are transferrable? Penalty? Just booking window?

Yes, it's just the advance window issue. For your home resort, you can use those points to book 11 months in advance. If you want to book a stay somewhere other than your home resort, you have to wait until the 7 month point. Then you can use the points wherever you want - depending on availability, of course!!
