Owning at more than one place?

I am totally new to DVC, so please bear with me and forgive if this is a dumb question.

We recently purchased 180 AKV points. For now, that is a good number of points for us, but I can see wanting to add on down the road.

I see on the boards that many many members are owners at more than one resort. I understand that owning at more than one will give you the option to book at 11 months out at more than one resort. What I don't understand, is how many points you need to have at a resort to book at 11 months? Also, can you use all your points at either resort?

So if I own 180 of AKV and then someday bought 100 points at BWV (just for argument's sake), could we spend 280 points on a stay at either place and book at 11 months out at either place?

No, the AKV points could only be used to book at AKV 11 months out. You could not use the BWV points at AKV until 7 months out. Obviously the same would go for the BWV points. They could only be used at BW 11 months out anywhere at 7 months out.Hope this helps.

What some people do is to alternate stays at each place they own. They then bank or borrow points to have the length of stay they want and it gives them the 11 month windows.

What many people do is banking and borrowing on some of their contracts and alternating which one they book each year. For example, bank 100 BWV points in the 2010 use year, then book at 11 months out at BWV during their 2011 UY with up to 300 points (100 banked from 2010, 100 natively in 2011, and borrow 100 from 2012). You could do similar things with your other contract(s) and stagger where you use your 11 month window.

And at 7 months or less you can use any mix of your points you wish to book anywhere; a great way to eat up "leftover" points to make sure they don't expire!

I own 160 @ BLT, 50 @ VGC, 75 @ AKV, and 36 at VWL, for a grand total of 321 points, and plan to play exactly those types of "games" to stay at different places with my 11 month window! (We usually do studios and I like one 3 night trip + one 5 or 6 night trip each year, plus my parents plan to use 100 points annually (they chipped in $$$) for at least two 3 nights stays each year). At 7 months I plan to try switching off to try some of the other resorts I don't own at, and if I can't at least I have my home resort ressie and can still take my trip!!!

You can only use home resort points at their home resort at 11 months. You can combine them and use them anywhere at 7 months.
