We're getting an Owners Locker on our trip in 2 weeks and I've been collecting stuff to put in it for a LONG time now. DH found me a box to use for shipping the stuff down that is 54.5 linear inches which is REALLY close to holding the same volume as the OL. I finally decided it was time to pack it up last night and weigh it and make sure everything fit. :scared1: I had been estimating 35 Lbs but it's really 44 Lbs and IT'S PACKED FULL!!! There isn't even room for a stick of gum left in it!! Even tho the dimensions on my shipping box are different the overall size should still work, right? (my Xerox box is 20x24x10.5 and the OL is 22x20x13.) Am I going to regret loading it up THIS FULL THIS QUICKLY? Gosh! I knew I had a big list of "stuff" but I really didn't expect to have to have someone sit on the top of it to hold it shut while I sealed it up!

I was also hoping to be able to store any leftover water / cans of beer / Capt. Morgan in it for our next trip in August....but that ain't lookin' like an option now with it being this full... Sigh. What should I take out? Paper plates? Extra utensils? Plastic cups (for cocktails at the pool)? The re-fillable water bottles? The extra flip flops? The unopened packages of snack crackers? Coffee? Sugar Canister? Hats & visors? I think I got carried away.:rotfl:

We don't have an Owners Locker yet, haven't given it much thought. However it sounds like you have quite a few items in yours and I guess it depends on what is most important to keep down there until your next trip back. For me, I would pull out the flip flops because they can be squeezed into a suitcase. Then decide how much room is needed for the beer and liquor for the next trip. Good luck!! ;)

Unless you are ready and willing to get a second locker (I know how hard you had to work to convince your husband about the first one!), then yeah, I think you might regret it. You WILL think of things when you are there that you didn't think of at home and you will have some leftovers you want to keep. I'd say have a good look at what you've packed...snack crackers are a lot cheaper and easier to replace than a partially full bottle of alcohol. Paper plates - what do you need those for since you have real plates in the villas and paper plates are already in the studios?

The other option is to ship it all down and if it doesn't fit, bring home what you can. Just be prepared with space in your luggage if it comes to that...or be prepared to ship some items home.

Also, calculating the volume disparity of your box versus the OL, I come up with a 680 cubic inch difference (OL being greater in volume). That's a little less than 2 average size womens' shoe boxes.

I stuffed it with so much stuff 'cuz I am trying to learn how to travel more in carry-ons and check less bags. We often use DME so I wanted to pack some stuff that would be expensive to buy on-site at Disney like full-size SPF's. We only use studios so we don't get any "real" plates or "real" knives or anything so I put in extras of that stuff.... We will likely just get cases of water delivered tho so I could probably remove the re-fillable water bottles. As much as I'd like to use nice re-fillables and cut down on the whole water bottle thing, Costco only delivers cases of individual bottled waters. I'd order the gallon sizes if they'd deliver them tho. But taking those out would give me room for my Captain!:rotfl2: Guess I gotta prioritize!:rolleyes1

We use a "volume/price/(ease of replacement)=OL value" formula to calculate what makes the cut and what does not.

For example, a large package of napkins would always be removed before our wireless router. The napkins cost substantialy less than our router and take up much more space while also being easier to replace than the router for each trip.
Expiration dates can come into play too if there is a close call.

If you figure out your own formula, you will realize that paper plates would score lower than some other things, such as a 3/4 full bottle of rum :)

I freely admit to being mathematically challenged....but how did you figure up the volume? I didn't even think I had THAT much extra room. I added all of the dimensions up L + W + H and came up to 54.5 linear inches for my box and 55 linear inches for the OL. I would be happy to know that I would really have that much extra space. I actually put some items into a plastic shoebox size storage box in there that I was debating about just sorting into baggies but I liked having the stuff organized together (like my wine glasses, coffee scoop, spare utensils, straws, chip clips, churchkey opener, bottle & can huggies etc.) I logged expiration dates on everything that has one on my list. Using DME puts you at a real disadvantage to buy replacement stuff sometimes...but it's FREE.

Oh, and I put in a couple doz. extra paper plates as Mousekeeping only gives you like 4 or 6 of them sometimes. I am SUCH a packrat... I also want to bring a "real" ice cube tray as I am a mixed drink drinker and hate having to run to the ice machine all the time....

On the water -- I have a Brita pitcher in my OL and a refillable Nalgene bottle for the parks. When it's in storage, the pitcher is filled with coffee and tea packets inside of ziplock bags. I have filled all available space I think -- kind of like filling Mr. Potato Head with small pieces to maximize what fits in the box at Once upon a Toy.

HTH
PS To calculate volume you multiply the numbers.

How do you calculate volume? Multiply length x height x width. So
20x24x10.5 = 5040 cubic inches
22x20x13 = 5720 cubic inches

However, you don't have 680 cu in all in one spot.

If you line up the dimensions like this:

20 x 24 x 10.5
20 x 22 x 13

you can see that the the container is a little bit taller and a little bit narrower on one side. So you have 2.5 inches in height and -2 inches along one side. Put a spacer in your box to account for the two inches you don't have in the OL. Then you can go up another 2.5 inches.

Doh! Thanks!! Trust me...this box is packed up tight like a game of Tetris!

That's exactly what we did, too - I can't remember what I put inside the pitcher now, but stuff is nestled, tucked away, and packed inside other stuff as much as possible! This will be our first trip with both lockers (I started a new one on a short 1-night trip in March) and I'll be kind of glad to move some stuff from my extremely full locker #1 into my loosely packed locker #2.

Pack what you can and drink the fun juice. If you are still short on space, get a second locker.

On second thought, maybe you should just get a second locker for the fun juice. :lmao:

:rotfl: Annie that is too funny!!

Welcome to the club!! :goodvibes

I can see poor John biting his lip:happytv: He is a wise man:goodvibes

Love my locker and everything in it. I emptied an entire 26" suitcase into it and never looked backed:wizard:

I separated all my items into groups and put those in Gallon Size Ziplocs. Makes it easy to pack and unpack. Each Ziploc has a place. Kitchen Ziploc, bathroom Ziploc, etc.

We use the empty locker for pool toys, goggles etc in our Villa while there.

I'm watching this but I ain't saying a thing.

Yup... he's just thinking how good that bottle of rum is going to taste if it doesn't fit and you leave it as a tip for him.

John,
Leave my icewine and G Marnier alone.<g>
65 hours to go. Single digits in days but still double in hours...

OL is the GREATEST !!!!!

:rotfl: And just wait for that 2nd OL :lmao:

Actually, I'm reading this with lots of interest. Still working on my DH convincing him that we would use it and only travel with our carryon. Might just do it, we have 2 trips planned while my DD is on the WDW CP this fall.

John,

Speaking of GM, do you worry all the time that the cork could have fallen out and everything will have a distinct orange essence when you next arrive? :)

We spent an hour or so the last evening of our first couple of OL trips sitting on the lid to get it closed before finally getting a second locker.

Now we only need to spend about 45 minutes each trip sitting on the lids of the two lockers to get them closed. :teeth: (Most of that time savings just comes from learning exactly where to sit on the lid to get it closed. :teeth: :teeth: )

It sounds like you may just want to order that 2nd locker so John can have it waiting for you at arrival! :)

Enjoy!

Let's have some fun, AA. How about a $25 Amex gift card for a video of your Locker loading?

Nope, OL is very careful AND there's NO room in that box for the cork to go even if it did want to come out. Ask John.. every time he hauls my box I think he spends a week at the chiropractor.

Come to think of it WCricket.. "distinct orange essence"? I'd have the only OL that smells like Soarin'. Now that's a good thing!
