Overbooking

Great stories. I have never been bumped anywhere before.

I know own DVC and I do not think that happens in the villas???

We booked a tower room at the Contemporary a year in advance for a very special birthday trip. Two weeks before arrival we were notified the resort was overbooked and that they were moving us over to the Polynesian and upgrading us to a Lagoon View Concierge room.

Not wanting to move nor knowing the significance of what they were offering (it was only our second trip ;) ), I begged every supervisor and manager I could think of all day long to "give it to someone else who would appreciate it". I was still unshowered and in my nightgown, phone in hand, at 3 in the afternoon but all my attempts at reasoning were futile: we had to move. I was not a happy camper and considered cancelling the whole trip.

Everyone I spoke with assured me we'd love it. (Some were nicer than others. I remember one CM telling me if we showed up at the CR and insisted on a room that we no longer had a reservation for they would be within their rights to call the police - that was when I'd had it and considered cancelling. Then I decided that nobody was going to ruin my trip :teeth: and at the urging of friends and family in the know finally relented). Needless to say, it turned out to be a very special trip indeed.

A funny twist to the story: several months before this happened a psychic I'd seen for fun (who talked a lot during the reading of my deceased father) kept telling me I was going to Hawaii. I kept saying, no, just Florida. She said "I know it's Hawaii because I see them putting leis around your neck".

It dawned on me what she'd said the weekend we were moved when I realized we would be in the Hawaii building. :scratchin Then, in researching the Polynesian , I read that "Disney does a wonderful job of transporting their guests to the South Seas of Hawaii". Hmmmm.

When we arrived at the Poly, we were driven in the golf cart to the Hawaii building . There to greet us were two concierge CMs who warmly welcomed us and yes, put leis around our necks! It was then that I cried a bit because it felt to me like somehow my father had managed to arrange a special birthday gift for me from heaven. :sunny: Leave it to him.

Being members of DVC I wonder what would happen we this happended to us. Would they put us in a non-DVC resort if the DVC resorts were all full and what about our points? Not that I can imagine this happening, I was just wondering..smjj

Now that's my kind of "room bump" :)

Of course, we go when it's not crowded, so we'll never get that lucky.
Or with my luck, they'll probably be totally full at the WL only, and will move us to the GF (sorry, just not my style) or Sports during a cheerleading convention (aka "bring in da noisenoisenoise").

Haven't ever been "bumped" in any hotel at WDW (or anywhere for that matter), but if it happens it happens, c'est la vie... as long as there's a WDW room somewhere-- wouldn't want to be bumped offsite, of course.
I wouldn't imagine they would bump you offsite...that would defeat a whole lot of their "captive audience" opportunities, as well as deny YOU benefits such as EMH..I'm no expert...but I would imagine they would figure out something Disney, what do you think? I never thought of it before tonight, but a bump
COULD happen, expecially since a lot of us are going in May, the beginning of the celebration, and it is not at all inconceivable! :confused3

Do you mean, they do this after you've actually paid for your rooms???

Happened to us once at YC. While checking in the CM says 'here is your key for concierge elevator' - I said we are not on concierge - we have a regular water view. He said none were available and hoped concierge would be alright. It was a nice surprise :flower:

What a special story...I teared up reading it. Thank you for sharing. :flower3:

That happened to us at the Hard Rock Hotel. We booked a pool view room and when we arrived they said there were none left and asked if it was o.k. to be moved to the club level. At first I didn't know what she meant, but as soon as she told us we'd have to use our key card on the elevator to get to the club level- then I knew she meant concierge! The room was very nice :)

this i can top.
last october for the second weekend of the month, i was booked 7 months in advance for the hrh standard room

i got there at 10 in the morning and was told they were overbooked for that night.

i was offered to be moved over to portofina bay concierge for the first night of my stay, then moved over by staff for the rest of my stay back at hrh the next afternoon.

and the best part, i was refunded my money.. free stay!!
woo hoo

We are booked at Sports for our honeymoon. I would rather stay there then be moved to another value but if we had to be bumped I wouldn't complain. If we got upgraded to a better resort, I certainly wouldn't complain. Although we are going at a busy time, checking in on July 3rd, I doubt this will happen seeing as we will be there early enough for pre-registration but you never know. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

My cousin and his wife had a ressie for Carribbean (I believe, 1 of the moderates) for their honeymoon. A couple of weeks before they left they got a call that there was a convention or a large group for something, they were moved to the Contemporary, they were pleasantly surprised.

All I can say is I really hope this DOESN'T happen to me! :rotfl2:

I'm not too worried about it though (I would imagine it does happen but is not an everyday occurance) but we have been planning for 2 years, went roundy roundy round with "which hotel" plus having a family of 6 also made it an interesting decision, etc...

Now, we are in the tower but not the 14th or 12th floor, so they could bump us up there I guess or the Grand Floridian but it would have to be a suite of some sort to make me happy. LOL! (And/or the freebie trip - in that case, I could probably deal with whatever! :rotfl: )

You guys are much better then I am. It would be our last WDW trip if it happened to us. Its hard enough to plan which hotel and then have it switched. There was a few years ago a HUGE thread on the universal boards. A family had booked PFB for one night just to get FOTL but they got walked to the Peabody!!

We were booked at the HRH in 2003, and had made arrangements for a King Club room.

Seven months we had the room paid for- and when we arrived, they were overbooked in Club.

We got a regular room, 2 breakfast vouchers and 2 cocktail vouchers- and my DH will never stay there again.

He loves PBH though....

Gosh! I didn't realized this ever happened at an expensive place like Disney World!!! Like the above post, we plan and dream for months about our resort. It would really be a bummer to get switched unless it was an upgrade! To me the reasort is a big part of the vacation!!! If you already had ressies made for eating at the restaurants at the resort you were staying at, that would be bad too!!! I don't see why they would ever need to overbook!! Especially when their guests pay an arm and a leg!!!

I received a free stay at the Beach club concierge after they booked us in a handicapped room at the Yacht club (unrequested). :jumping1:

It's like anything else that you make reservations for (airlines, restaurants, etc.). Sometimes overbooking happens when you have so many different agents taking reservations. But like the airline, they are able to legally "bump" you.

Shocking as it may seem, there are actually a lot of guests who (for whatever reason) just never show up. It's just like the airlines. Boggles my mind... but it happens all the time.

In my case the CR was overbooked due to the renovation of Shades of Green. All the SOG guests were moved to the CR. I guess that is why it wasn't optional not to move.

I agree at first we were extrememly disappointed to have to move (which was why I fought so hard to stay). But again, that was before we realized what a special treat the Poly LVC was. :cloud9:

Ironically enough, we were the most disappointed the following year when we had a plain old wing room at the CR - we'd truly been spoiled! :rotfl: (Only kidding, we love the CR).

In our experience if Disney does have to move you out of the resort you've booked they do take good care of you. ;)
