Over 14 means a 14yo *can* dress up, right?

Safety first and besides so what she can't wear a costume, look on the bright side... your daughter will be in Disney, a privilege denied to many children!

Hence, Give Kids The World.

Also, Make a Wish Foundation's largest request from terminally ill kids is to go to Walt Disney World.

I have kids... trust me, your daughter will get over the "not being able to wear a costume" tantrum the minute she sets foot in Magic Kingdom.

I don't recall the OP mentioning a tantrum.

I'm not sure why you would choose to characterize it that way without knowing her.

Um, sanctimonious much? You don't know my kid, and the assumption that she would throw a tantrum is super offensive. She would be disappointed. We are deeply aware of our privilege and so is she, and your post is super, super rude.

@Violet Parr Perhaps your daughter would have fun at a runDisney event? Looks like you did Everest last year. The Star Wars races are in April at WDW and she could go a Rae there?

It was not my intention to be rude. It is simply my opinion that there are far more sadder things in life than not being able to wear a costume. My daughter was a cast member for 4 years and she's briefed me on how some guests complain about everything. It's not Disney's fault your daughter will be disappointed, it's the fault of evil people in this world trying to instill fear in all of us, and Disney is simply taking the appropriate safety measures.

Go on Etsy... there are shirts and Mickey ears that reference favorite Disney characters. Whereas she may not be able to wear a costume, she can come pretty close to resembling her favorite character.

(Below is blouse and ears my daughter recently wore to Disney)

I never even blamed Disney or said it was their fault my daughter will be bummed about not getting to dress up. I am not sure where you get the idea that I am complaining! We hate complaining and never do, even when warranted. I was simply asking for clarification on the rules, which we will follow to the letter. That is ALL.

Yes! Actually, she just started running and this is a GREAT idea. I was a little lonely running Everest solo. She will LOVE the races. Thanks!

She looks 21! She kept getting offered alcohol at a wedding a few weeks ago. She's just a total big little kid when it comes to dressing up, though, and hasn't had a non-Disney Halloween in over 4 years. She is already dead-set on being Rey from Force Awakens this year. But another part of the disappointment would come from not seeing all of the other adults dressed up. There are always some amazing cosplay/costumes from some of the young adults that go to the party!

Yeah, unfortunately it's not looking good. Disney may change the rules by October but it's probably best to adjust to the disappointment now and maybe be pleasantly surprised. The runDisney suggestion sounds like a good compromise- lots of costumes there!

Are you projecting? The OP didn't say anything about her kid throwing a tantrum.

And I swear, y'all Think of The Wish Kids ought to have its own Disboard version of Godwin's Law.

Yeah, we mentioned the new rules in the car tonight and she said, "What??? That's lame!" and then she moved on to something else. That was it. Kids are funny. :) She will absolutely love the idea of doing a runDisney event. I'm tempted to register for the Dark Side half marathon as one of her Christmas gifts.

Do it! It will be a fun weekend and a way for you guys to bond. (only if you think she can do it of course ;) )

I had a feeling you were more disappointed about her being too old than she was.... My baby is only 2 and I can already relate a bit.

I probably won't be able to keep up with her! She's sporty.

Oh, totally. She says she'll be perfectly happy dressing up Halloween night at Fort Wilderness (can't imagine them changing the rules there) and Disneybounding for the party a few nights before that.

I have to believe if you're creative you could still put together an outfit that's not costume, so to speak, but still identifiable. For instance, my costume is a pair of lederhosen and an alpine hat, DW wears a poodle skirt and saddle shoes. Are they actually going to stop you for wearing that? :confused3

THIS is exactly why Disney is going to need to have a serious discussion among themselves to determine "what is a costume?" and make it very clear in writing to avoid issues at the gate.

What you describe as what you are wearing, absolutely in my mind is a costume. We wear shorts and tshirts that have been painted and decorated, so I consider it a costume.

To me - if you, an adult, would not wear it in everyday life (USA since that is where WDW is located) aka work, school, shopping, church, out to dinner and even just hanging around the house ............. then it's a costume. If it's a prom dress, it's a costume. Most photos that people have posted saying they don't consider it a costume, I would.

So now that the general public does not have a uniform view of costume, Disney will have to be very clear as to what they view as a costume.

Perfect example below. Poster feels this is just a style choice. Maybe in another location, but here in the USA that to me is clearly costumes/cosplay. Cosplay = costumes. WAY more costume than my outfit. If costumes are banned on adults, these should be banned.

She may look older then she is (Sorry mommy/daddy, but your baby girl is growing up!) but if anyone asks she can just say she is 13. No one is going to press the issue.

I get your point - having lost two dear children (niece and a daughter's schoolfriend) at ages 3 and 12, respectively, I've learned not to fuss or pout about the small stuff that may disappoint others. But no one stated anything about the daughter throwing a tantrum, so not sure where you got that. Also, MAW doesn't just cater to the terminally ill anymore. Blessedly, the numbers for that were down, and they were able to expand to 'life threatening conditions'.

Disagree - I think you jumped too quickly on that.

I can imagine them changing the rules for onsite resorts, so don't build her up too much for dressing up in costume at all, IMO.

Disney is all bottom line oriented.
MNSSHP is a cash cow, which would lose attendance with a no costume policy.
I bet those rules stay during park hours, but are relaxed for the Halloween Party. The fake weapon portion will likely stay in place.
