It TRULY breaks my heart. I worked there for 2 years, one as the train driver, and it was one of the BEST times of my life. Hurricane Ivan and Dennis really messed things up, but honestly there were two people high up on the chain that started the trouble and unfortunately the hurricanes ended it. Money was being spent before they could make it and when the AZA pulled out, I knew that would be trouble. Here's a couple articles you can read if interested. All those animals, all those babies, I hope they can be placed soon. :sad1:

I'm going to email the director of a much smaller zoo up here where I live in Crestview to see if she has any room for maybe some of the smaller animals.

Hopefully they will place the animals in a better environment. I have to agree that after the storms the zoo really went down hill. I also thought it was very expensive. I hope it all works out for the animals.

FYI: I live in Niceville. Small world on the DIS.

That it is.

Yeah, the Zoo closing really sucks. That was one of the things that we could do for pretty cheap on a family day. We always took something up with us to donate for the animals. We always had a good time going. However, I was always told, "No, you can't have a giraffe", and "No, you can't have a tiger", and "No, you can't have a (any animal at the zoo)".

Oh, I hate to hear that. We have taken the children there several times(although we live in Atlanta,we have family in Pensacola and Niceville.) I always loved the howler monkeys. I wonder where they will send the animals?

This is completely sad. I can't believe we are going to spend millions on a park that only the downtown crowd will use, but we are going to let our zoo close. Our local government needs to be replaced and fast!

I live 2 minutes from the zoo :lmao: small world !

I'm sad that it is closed right now and it said "come say goodbye to the zoo!" on the sign then it said "temporarily closed"
I'm gonna miss zoo lights :sad1:

I'm sorry about your zoo closing.

Small world is right. My dad's family is from Destin. I spent my summers there as a child.

Anyone from my area where the zoo is closing....do you know what park gottaluvPluto referred to in regards to the gov't backing that instead of our zoo?

The park in question is in Pensacola. Right before you get to downtown. The problem with the money is that the Zoo and Pensacola are in different counties, Santa Rosa and Escambia, respectively.
