Hello, I am JUST back from 13 nights at Disney, 6 off-site followed by 7 at the GF. On 6/25 my DH and I had dinner at Boma. It was our BEST dining experience of the trip (followed closely by Citrico's)! We stayed at AKL last summer and fell in love with Boma and Jiko. DS spent a few hours at Simba’s Cub House (as he had requested) while DH and I had a leisurely dinner. After our waiter allowed us to try several wines we chose a wonderful South African wine. My favorite part of the buffet last time was the soups. I was disappointed to see that the Ginger Carrot soup was not on the menu but I tried the Coconut Curried Chicken soup. I am usually not a big curry fan, but this soup was unbelievably delicious! The curry taste was subtle and blended with the other ingredients perfectly. I mentioned to the waiter how much I enjoyed the soup and how much I had also enjoyed the Ginger Carrot Soup and Butternut Squash soup on my previous trip. He gave me a recipe request card, which I immediately filled out and requested the 3 soup recipes. There was an e-mail dated 6/26 waiting for me in my inbox when I got home with all of the recipes!!! There were also delicious ribs, chicken and a watermelon rind salad on the buffet. Just as I was getting ready to go and get my Zebra Domes (which are smaller in size now) for dessert, the waiter told me that he had told the chef how much I enjoyed the Ginger Carrot Soup – and the chef made a small batch which he personally delivered! It was better than I remembered. Most of the people in our small section of tables got a taste of the soup too! :D

What a great experience! Thank you for sharing.

I've never eaten at either Jiko's or Boma's. I was thinking about getting a PS for my and DH for Jiko's because I hear wonderful things about it...a few weeks ago I read an entire thread about how good Boma's is. Talk about decisions! I'm not crazy about buffets, but being vegetarian, I get more choices. I like the ambiance of Jiko (from what I hear). So I'm not sure anymore. Especially after reading your review.

Should I stick with Jiko's?

You can't go wrong with either restaurant. No help, I know. Both are very accomodating. I am allergic to nuts. At Jiko the chef came out to our table, sat down and went through the entire menu with me, circling what I could have and crossing out what was no good for me. At Boma the chef also came out and walked through the buffet with me pointing out the foods I could and couldn't have. In both instances they offered to make variations of certain dishes without nuts just for me. I believe the menus are available at http://www.wdwig.com/dining.htm
I know you will enjoy whichever you choose.:D

Actually, that is very helpful. Since you recommend both so highly, I would probably lean toward Jiko for ambiance.

Thank you for the menu link. I love WDWIG...lots of great info there. ;)

I clicked on your link to check out the menus. Bad Wendy! BAD! Now I'm hungry and I want to go NOW.

That veggie entree at Jiko's sounds WONDERFUL. Even the buffet menu at Boma's looked amazing. Mmmm...food....

Jo-Jo21,

dizneykid,

Here is the recipe for the Carrot Ginger Soup. I haven't made it yet but it sounds easy enough. Enjoy!

CARROT GINGER SOUP
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
Boma

Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients:

2 cups Carrots, chunky cut
2 cups Water
1 cup Heavy Cream
1 cup Milk
2 cups American Cheese, sliced or shredded
1 ½ tablespoons Ground Ginger
½ cup Sugar, adjust as needed
Roux (¼ cup butter and ¼ - ½ cups flour)

Method:

To make a roux, melt the butter in a small sauce pot, slowly add the flour to make a paste. Cook until incorporated. Remove from heat and set aside.

In pot cook carrots in water, sugar, and ginger. Let simmer until carrots are soft. Using a food processor or blender, puree until smooth.

Add heavy cream, milk, and roux. Cook until soup is hot and slightly thick.

Add American cheese and let simmer until cheese melts.

Adjust seasoning.

What a lovely experience - we shall be there ourselves on Saturday night. MY DD is also going to Simbas, what did your DS think of it?

pigby,

When we stayed at AKL last August we left my DS in SCH while we dined at Jiko. I am so glad we did this at the beginning of our trip because he literally begged to go back! We let him go back on 2 other days, for 2 hours each and DH and I got to eat at Boma one day and lounge in the hot tub the other. The CMs there are wonderful. I always saw at least 3 there. It's a fairly large area and nicely decorated. There is a locked door so that kids can not leave on their own and they give you a pager in case they need to reach you. Each time he was there he colored and made a craft. He also watched Disney movies, played video games and ate dinner. When he heard we were going to AKL for dinner on this trip, he pleaded to go back the SCH and again he had a wonderful time. I am sure you and your DD will enjoy the experience. :D
