Well... here goes.
Most wedding videos (in my opinion) are very cheezy. A lot of companies shoot to shoot, they don't really understand compositing. Wedding videography is a lucrative business because most people just want to see themselves, hear some great music.. and they don't look into the details of the shots. Working in video, I pay attention to lighting, shadows, composition (that's a big one!). With composition, it's just like photography. Where's the depth in the picture? Where's the subject? How do you frame your shots?
Simply Cinematic gets it. Again, my opinion. You know they do more than wedding videos. They know and understand the camera and the lenses, and the angles... their cinematography is quite brilliant. They really are talented videographers. I just think they take their time and actually plan out their day (kind of like a storyboard artist would on a movie). Their edits are well thought out and are beautiful.
Also, when I called them for my wedding video (I just wanted them to shoot raw and I would edit it).. they were willing to talk to me about what kind of cameras they used, what kind of gear they had, what style they were shooting. I called a couple others that a lot of other brides talk about, and they were clueless when it came to what equipment they had. I mean, they knew what kind of cameras but that's about it. Sad
I remember Simply Cinematic being quite pricey.. but when it comes to your one day,.. I say splurge.
I also get annoyed with certain videographers that some people have named... because they do the add on packages with the "special effects". First of all, if you're going to do special effects, DO SPECIAL EFFECTS. Some of them... are well, not really special effects. They are one button on final cut (editing software) and then they charge you an extra $500 for it. Rip off.
Again, sorry.. this is all my opinion. I just really feel strongly about video.
I believe the people shooting your video should be professional videographers. Not just wedding videographers.
So to conclude my rant... just because you own high end video cameras and professional software, does not make you a great videographer. When you understand video and film and cinematography.. then that's when you should call yourself a great videographer.
My two cents. Off my soapbox now
