We drove down to WDW so for our first day we had a room only ASMo. We arrived at 9:30 am but the room wasn't going to be ready until between 3-5 pm. DH wasn't happy about that but I told him it was to be expected and get over it. So we walked around the resort for a bit and explored. All three kids, DD7, DD4 and DS2 loved the playground and spent quite some time playing there. They had it all to themselves. To kill some time I drug everyone to DTD. When we got back our room was ready. We got put in the Herbie section. Very cute :) DS2 loved the water squirting floor near the Herbie car. We couldn't get him out of it. Anyway, the room was very clean and although there were 5 of us and 2 double beds, we had no problem fitting or sleeping. To be honest, after sleeping in that bed, I realized what a piece of crap my own bed is  We had girls from a dance squad in the other rooms on our floor but never heard a sound from them.

The rest of our stay was AKL concierge. I had concerns about staying concierge the whole week but DH thought it would be great. It was nice, but we've decided when we do go back, we'll only do concierge for a day or two for the sunrise safari. The breakfast offerings were good but the concierge staff just didnt' seem that friendly or anything. They never said anything to anyone unless they were at their desks. The bell men and housekeepers where much more helpful and friendly. The room was great. We had 5th floor, queen with bunks and daybed. We were on Zebra Trail and Arusha Savannah. It was nice because we had a water hole just off the balcony so you just had to wait for something to get thirsty. We saw giraffes, quite a few zebra and ankole cattle, an Eland loved to hang out in a small area near the watering hole and one day we even had a few wildebeasts. The room was clean. I didn't find it dark at all. The hotel has better lighting than our house. We never got towel animals but it was fun coming back in the evening to discover what the children's dolls had been up to while we were gone. Usually watching TV and hiding chocolates :teeth: The pool was awesome. I must appologize to all those people who have said things about their kids liking the pool more than the parks. I thought "gee, those kids are weird", but I must add my DD7 into that group. She begged to go swimming every day and would ask at the parks when we were leaving just so she could swim. The zero entry was great for DS2. He would just wade in until it was knee deep and just play. He made lots of little friends there. The food at Mara was pretty good and the room service pizza, while expensive was also tasty.
I think my biggest regret of the stay was not spending enough time at the hotel to really explore and take advantage of the activities they offered...but there's always next time, right? :earboy2:

Hi!
Sounds like you had a really nice stay. It's too bad you weren't blown away by the concierge experience. I have been - but I guess more for the pre-planning and I DO love the lounge. On my last stay there, in December, I too was disappointed with the CMs in the lounge (the Itinerary Planning Office CMs are separate from that and awesome. Of course - they have the luxury of not having to come face to face with nightmare guests ;) ) Anyway, while I don't expect them to cut cartwheels for me, a smile or "Good morning" would be nice - and it really wasn't happening. They always seem to be staring down at their computer monitors and I felt timid even asking for any help. Or I'd sit down in the chair and wait and wait while they worked on the computer - without even saying they'd be with me in a moment. I hesitate to complain but to be honest I find it pretty poor.
ANYWAY~
I'm headed back for a week in just over a month, so what am I complaining about?! :teeth:
I absolutely adore the AKL and I love the lounge and I LOVE the coffee machine and snacks; plus, it's a luxury to have the pre-planning for room requests, meal reservations, tour reservations, etc. I hope they'll inject some levity to the CMs who work in the lounge, though... I'm afraid they must have to deal with the occasional a**hole and it probably tends to turn them off to guests in general :sad2:

We just returned from AKL concierge - June 10-18. Our room on the 5th floor, room 5427, had the worst mildew smell. Don't stay in this room. The engineering staff tried to fix it by shampooing the carpet and deodorizing the air conditioning unit - to no avail. We could have changed rooms, but the view was not as good. We had the same view - Zebra trail Arusha savannah and really enjoyed the animals.
Maybe it is because I am older - 55, but I loved the concierge staff. Corey made it possible for my DH to be the "Veteran of the Day" for the flag retreat. Joey was able to show us the Presidential and Vice Presidential Suites. Joey call us, "his family", and was very accomodating. He made every attempt to make us feel that there was nothing he wouldn't do for us. The staff does not interact much, but they are polite and will get you anything you want. I liked the reserved atmosphere of the lounge and so did DH. Joey also left a gift for us. I was really surprised.
Got really tired of the evening African offerings. Loved breakfast. Loved the sunrise safari.
I would go again, but probably for only a few days. And I would never take a room that has a smell like that room did. All of our belongings have an odor. We really like POR for the lovely landscape and Piano Bob.

bsusanmb ~ I saw you and your DH in the lounge!!! I overheard you talking about the "Veteran of the Day" experience with one of the CM's. We had a great stay at AKL, most of the concierge staff was very friendly. We had a long chat with Aja, and Andy called one night just to see how things were going. This may be because it was our second stay there in less than a year. We plan to go back again next June.
impsmom ~ when were you there? We left there on Saturday. What room did you have? We were MILES away from the lounge in 5381!!!

We arrived Monday and checked out on Saturday. We had room 5521. That was a little bit of a trek to the lounge too but it wasn't too bad since there were several viewing spots on the way :)

I totally agree with what you said. The Itinerary Planners were great. They answered all my questions and got us all the PS/ADR (whatevers  ) we requested.
I didn't expect a lot from the lounge CMs but like you said a smile or greeting would be nice. It was almost intimidating having to walk up them at their desks to get information. That's why after the first time, I made DH handle it all :) Actually DH took the kids up our last night there to watch cartoons and to find out something and that was the first time anyone talked to them and then they gave each of the kids a safari Mickey beanie which was nice.
I'd still stay there again for the safari. That was awesome! but next time we'll just save the money and stay in a regular room for most of the stay.

Yes, that is what I will do also. A couple days is nice, but 8 days was a bit much. Besides, that room was BAD!!!! You must have been there the same time we were. My DH and I tried to sit at the table against the wall with 2 chairs. You might have seen us there EATING!!!

I met two nice ladies there, Pat and Carol, from Chicago. We had something in common - our children adopted babies from Russia!
