No kidding about the parents. When DH and I volunteered at the park last week, kids got a free Tootsie Pop, and depending on the color at the end of the stick, they got stickers, a bookmark, or a book. It wasn't so bad when the mother of a toddler asked if her kid could have stickers instead of a bookmark (what's a 3 y.o. going to do with a bookmark?) but the parents of 7 and 8 y.o. who waited around for an hour, then put the kid back in line when we clearly said everyone got one chance, made me a little :furious: . These prizes were donated by teachers, and the parents are acting like the kid is entitled.
Also, I have a student who still can't write his name after a month in kinder (and his name is only 4 letters long). I get his homework, and his name is written pretty well (part of homework is practice writing your name 3 X a night until you master it). I asked him who did his name-writing homework. You guessed it. Mommy. That's really going to help the kid learn how to write his name.
O.K. that's my vent on parents. I admit, I used to do DS's word search homework every Wed. night when he was in 5th grade. What can I say? He's an automatic speller, and I like word searches. I just wonder if the teacher ever caught on :confused3

Dweatl I'm sure you have have horror stories out the patooty (not sure how you spell that).

Hey Everyone,

Just got home from work, and wanted to say HOWDY!! I'm trying to keep up :) They finally have a replacement for my Schwans Route. Tomorrow I get to start training them. So hopefully, I'll be off my truck by the end of the month, or maybe the first week of November. Not sure yet, maybe longer than that too. Just depends on how quick they pick up everything.

Hope everyone is having a good night...

   More dis time!!!!!!

Evening everyone. Dh just made his way home from hockey practice (youth). I knew something was up when we left but had no idea what it specifically it was.

There are days I just absolutely hate youth sports and really wished my kids wanted to join the cup stacking club or something like it.

So our season is up and running officially now. All three levels of teams are picked in our 8 and under program. On the most advanced level the were down to 3 players for 2 spots. My Dh and I made a case for the oldest kid since he was moving to squirts next year. So the coaches put him on the team. He played on a team with my youngest son last where all the new kids play. Mostly it is all skills development and they do some games and a couple of close tourneys but I affectionately call it "mob hockey" The puck goes followed by 8 kids. There is no positioning other than someone in the goal which changes with each shift. Basically no rules. Well this kid played most of last year on this team and then got moved up to the other 1/2 ice team towards the end of the year. Again 1/2 ice not really structured on positioning too much yet. So kid is on the team and the coaches put him on Cody's line in defense. CJ is an awesome defensemen and a good leader so it seemed like a natural fit to teach the kid defense. He was the last kid picked and we already have a goalie/couple of centers and some pretty good wingers. His dad comes up to the coach tonight and tells him that there is no way that his kid is going to play defense (in a tone that means business). My Dh the assistant coach is one of those kind of guys when he finds someones weakness really likes to push buttons. This is going to be a long sticken year.

My little guy team as previously discussed earlier (brody's team) I'm just getting to know the parents and introducing myself to them. I can already tell I have some doozies. Great. We had such a great year last year on both teams I really dread dealing with these losers. Sometimes I just want to scream when I'm down there about what the MISSION OF YOUTH SPORTS IS.

Thanks all for letting me vent. Ok where do I join the twisted limey club? Is there an initiation process?

That dad must be pretty stupid when it comes to hockey because everyone knows your best forwards are defensemen. DUH!! I feel for you! I am so glad I don't have to deal with the parents anymore. It seems the older the kids get the more you weed out the stupid parents and you get to the regular ones. LOL Good luck pixiedust: Vent anytime I am there for ya! BTW we won our opening game. 8 to 0. Yeah!!! Go sharks!!

Hey Teresa loved your website. I look at a lot of hockey websites and it looks good and is up to date which beats about 98% of them I surf onto.

Thanks. Still playing with it. I am a rookie to creating a web site.

LOL I let my kids write on their own. Nick is learning how to write his name (he is in 3 year old preschool) I got a paper with a lot of scribbles on it. He told me he wrote his name. :rotfl2: Looks like ds9's hand writing. LOL I have to confess I do the word searches too!!!!!

I've got to hit the hay. I'm only 5 away from 500, but I need to shower and get to bed. I guess I'll hit it tomorrow. Finally!
I was so desperate, I posted a know-it-all, snarky comment on the CB (what else would one post there?) I saw a certain lime-haired fellow of Celtic descent over there, but he was way too mellow for the CB. DU, you should stay over here!

Is that program easy to work with? Have you taken any webmaster classes or anything. Our board really struggles with our web site. Never up to date. Not at all informative. We bought into another program which seems to have gone defunct.

Hey Michele I know exactly what you are talking about. This sport just sucks everything out of you if you aren't careful. Right now I'm the head referee, I help out other coaches when they're short, I'm on the league board, and I'm on the Hockey Foundatio board. At every level there is someone that wants something from me. Maybe a parent wants me to watch a kid that plays a little rougher so he doesn't hit their kid, or they want to know why their kid is on one team and not another, or some sponser want to know why they aren't shown as prominently at some fundraiser. It's just the nature of this beast. One day it bites you (parent or coach blows up at you); the next day it's making you feel great ( a kid gets their first goal or learns how to hockey stop cause you helped them). In your case you have the bonus of watching your sons accomplish things.
In any case; we're very good for taking vents. It's cause so many of us are in the same boats. :)
Oh, I think you are a shoe in for the warped limey club :teeth: In fact I can't think of anyone that posts on here that wouldn't be. :confused3 Even bears that think they aren't that warped. :rolleyes1

Yeah I've been working on weeding and we actually did a pretty good job. We still got the skateboard lady (Maybe you have all seen her on Discovery Health Channel) They are filming again which I have incredible problems with but that is another matter. This family won't last long. I've seen lots of these come and go in my 4 years of doing this. This kid won't make the top team next year and they'll be ticked and off they'll go. Apparently they were going to be really upset if he didn't make the D team this year. And to think my DH and I really made a case for them. The kid who didn't make the team is a great kid and is from a good family just was a year younger so has next year to transition.

With the little guys that is why when I retired from my board position I decided I would continue on with the first and second year program because as well as educating the kids on the game of hockey I really feel strongly about educating the families on what hockey involves and behavior issues and all that. Just got my zero tolerance speech prepared for the team meeting next week.

Yeah Ref issues are a way bigger beast than a few parents. The ground rules will be laid here shortly and this Dad continues he'll not get to watch his kid play. That will nip it pretty quickly. This family probably won't stick with this sport. Sadly I kind of like the kid and my son likes him and was really looking forward to him playing on his line. Funny thing is our first scrimmage may be without a goalie and I told my husband maybe this kid should get to try that since he doesn't play "defense". Now that would be funny. The guy would probably go balistic. Someones got to do it and I don't want it to to be my son. My youngest looks like he's going to be a goalie: my oldest not. He's got this fear of the puck kind of thing. I won't be able to watch it will stress me out that badly even if it is just a period. My little one is a different matter. He looks like he'll probably be a good goalie if his dad lets him.
