Someone asked about the photo scavenger hunt I did with my boys this summer. Rather than post it in someone else's thread I thought I would start a new one. The post is to get the boys (17 years old) to notice the details around DLR, take pictures, be in pictures, and give them something to think about in lines. The ones that say "stand by..." means they have to be in the picture. If it just says "find a..." then they just need a picture of it.
I wasn't going to do one this year but the boys started asking if I was going to do it again so I did. Here is the link to last year's scavenger hunt if you are interested.

That is AWESOME!!! What a fantastic way to keep older kids wrapped up in the magic! and a sneaky way to get them in pictures that they would otherwise try to avoid! Hats off to you Mom!! I think I may have to "borrow" your idea! - not just for a Disney trip but for any family trip coming up! Thanks so much for sharing! And yes PinkBudgie, sadly we were just 2 LGMH passing in the night! :( too bad we didn't see each other! But, there's always next time!;)

Yep, you're right. It can be adapted for any vacation if you do a little research ahead of what to look for. ;)

They got up to 40 points this trip. A character pic is worth 10 point for them because they won't do it. They got up to 40 points but could have had a lot more if they posed with a character. Point values will probably need to be changed for kids who already like to do that. Snow White was even more because we've never seen her pose for pics and because DH had a crush on her when he was little. More of a family joke.

The boys didn't run into anyone they knew but I did.

Quick question about the prizes. Would they normally have to pay for their own drinks and snacks?

Good question. Normally, we ask for water with our meal. We don't usually get a drink. That's normal for our family any time we go out for a meal. They chose to have speckeled lemonade at Bubba Gumps for their drink.

As for snacks, they could earn an "extra" snack. If is was one we were all having as family, they didn't have to pay for it.

Actually what ended happening was we had one large meal a day. Breakfast was free at CCI so that didn't count. But lunch or dinner at Cafe Orlean's, Whitewater Snacks, Bubba Gumps, etc. Then the other meal was more of snack like a pretzel or ice cream or a chimichanga. Anything around $6 or less. They decided to use their free "snack" as extra money to go towards a second bigger meal one day.

Did that make sense?

:thumbsup2 I absolutely love this idea and am going to borrow it for our Hanukkah trip this year. That and a Hidden Mickey hunt should add an extra element of fun. :woohoo:

I love this. Wish my DD was old enough to do something like this but I may make this something for my mom and I to do while we're exploring the park. Great to know your kids enjoyed it so much that asked for it again. :thumbsup2

Wow, what a great idea! I am always so impressed with how clever some people are! I would never think of doing something like that but I know my kids would *love* it!!! We leave in 2 weeks and I'm planning on tweaking it a bit for my kids & we'll give it a try. THANKS!!!

That does make sense. Although now I want to know what speckled lemonade is. :lmao:

It was a lemonade with bits of strawberry in it. Pretty good. :thumbsup2

Glad I could be helpful. I put it here so people could take what they want from it and change it around for their own family.

To get ideas on what to look for I went to the Disneyland Photo of the Day thread and looked at all the pictures. They were a good reminder of what was there. So thanks to everyone who posted pictures over there. I'll have to post some too when I have time to get my photos out of my camera.

I love the scavenger hunt too! And I love that the boys actually requested to do it again this year! Maybe in a few years DS will be interested in doing a little scavenger hunt at DLR. He loved the Nemo subs because he thought it was a game where you are "finding Nemo", lol, so maybe he would like to look for other things too.

Yes, next time you go you can just pick one thing and ask him to look for it. Like "Let's look for elephants" and watch for them all day. Or you make a list of just simple things like

elephant
Mickey Mouse (Fab 5 characters, ect)
bird
28 ( You could come up with some numbers to watch for. I know he'd like that) :thumbsup2
spots, stripes, ect.

Then you can check them off the list as he finds them. He'd probably like a list to check off. Of course, he may not want to leave until he finds them all so you better make them easy. :rotfl:

Those are good ideas and yes, he probably would like a list to check off. Now, I just need to figure out how to get back to DLR, lol. Wish we could go now but guess we'll have to wait awhile.

Yeah, guess you are a little busy right now. Well, DLR will be there when you are ready.

I've always wanted to make a scavenger hunt for my kids to do. We would split up and do one kid with one parent and do our hunt and then meet back somewhere at a designated place and time.

With our new AP's I know that just doing our regular ride routine can get old and we need to mix it up a bit each trip to keep it fresh. This is a great way to do that!

I'm going to tweak some of these a bit and our prizes will maybe be -your choice of pin from pin store ( I never buy full price pins from DL so this would be a real treat!), your choice snack and the big prize could be your choice t-shirt. My kids don't get much as far as souvies so all of these would be great prizes!

Great ideas! :thumbsup2 Just so you know, our boys worked together to earn the points. As we went around the park one or the other would find something and take a picture. One of my boys likes pins but not the other so much. Otherwise neither really has any souveniers they like, but they both like to eat!

I love it! Great sneaky way to get them in some of the photographs, even if they aren't the standard in-front-of-castle pictures. I think it's nice on return visits to a familiar place to find what's new or interesting details, rather than "how many time in a row can we ride Space Mountain?"

What a great idea! I told my sons, ages 7 and 8 about it and they want to try this! We changed the prizes to make it more appropriate for them though.
