We just got back from a 2 week trip to Orlando and Disney. My Dad was with us, and he has many, many food allergies. Basically, he cannot eat any seasonings whatsoever, with the exception of salt and a little ginger, though he can eat spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. At home his food is either cooked with salt and either a little butter, olive oil, lime or some kind of fruit juice (usually either apple or pineapple). So as you can imagine, restaurant eating can be a challenge!
Below is his experience with restaurants in Orlando and WDW (he was NOT on the DDP though):
Liberty Tree Tavern (lunch):
They made him the turkey, mashed potatoes and veg without seasonings, and it sounded so good my mother had it too! And it really was good - you don't need much seasoning on a meal like that.
Tonys
The chef cooked him a steak that was plain, and it was good. He served it up with buttered pasta and veg. It was a large amount, so DS helped him finish it.
Rose & Crown
The fish and chips are pretty plain no issues there.
Boma (Animal Kingdom Lodge):
This was an awesome meal! The chef came out and had a long talk with Dad. Due to his very restrictive allergies, there wasnt much on the buffet that was safe, except for some desserts. Well, the chef rose to the challenge, and off he went to create an entire special meal for Dad. He started by bringing a safe version of the amazing butternut squash soup (we all adored the regular one, and he really loved his too). Then he brought out a huge cast iron plate on a pedestal with Dads meal on it. It consisted of skewers of shrimp, steak and chicken leaning together in a pyramid shape. Beneath the pyramid was a heap of buttered noodles with a sprinkling of parmesan cheese and a heap of grilled veg. Filling up the rest of the space above the noodles and veg and below the top of the skewers was a nest of cellophane noodles. It was really, really impressive!!! It was very good, but HUGE! One thing we learned if the chef has to make a special meal for you, you can be guaranteed that it will be huge!
Dad and his special meal:
Tea at the Garden View Lounge, Grand Floridian Hotel:
The pastries, trifle, tarts etc. were fine, but the sandwiches were seasoned. So the chef made some special ones for Dad. He said they were just OK. But the rest of the tea was wonderful! Dad was there for the pastries, not the sandwiches, so he didnt care!
NY China Buffet Apopka-Vineland Rd (Lake Buena Vista, near Cypress Pointe):
Huge selection (about 10 long buffet units) of Chinese, very cheap, reasonable quality, no MSG. Dad was able to eat the sweet n sour chicken here.
Golden Corral:
My Dads favourite place to eat! It was cheap and had a huge selection, and he found many things there that he could eat. My mother loved the large salad selection she could live on salad. They must have eaten there about 6 times!
We stayed in a condo with full kitchen, so my parents ate breakfast at home, ate lots of fresh fruit in between, took coffee breaks (with pastries) etc., so they didnt always need a sit down restaurant. They also travelled with a bag of cashews to keep them going until meal time. Its always a good idea for people with food allergies to travel with safe snacks, just in case.
