Our refrigerator died:(

It must be contagious! Our fridge died, too! And it was a GE! Unfortunately the new one is a GE as well! BUT we live in an apartment so appliance deaths don't cost us anything. We now have a brand spanking new fridge to match our brand new microwave they installed last November. Maybe the dishwasher is on it's last leg!

I have to say being without a fridge SUCKS. The old one wasn't keeping things cold, and of course when they brought us the new one it was nearly 100 degrees outside and the fridge had been sitting in a hot truck so everything pretty much melted before the new fridge got cold. Good thing we hadn't been to the grocery lately!

Now we are waiting for the maintenance guys to hook up the ice maker because the fittings on the new fridge are a different size than the old one and the appliance delivery guys couldn't make the modifications. Having no ice AND a hot fridge is not a good combination. Of course DH didn't empty the ice out of the old fridge into a cooler because he didn't think of that! GRR!

Anyway, my deepest sympathy on the loss of your fridge. :rotfl:
Hope you find a nice on at Sears!

Our fridge died two years ago before our last Disney trip. The new one was delivered the day before we travelled. The only good thing about it was i didn't have to worry about anything spoiling while we were away- 'cause we had nothing in it! :teeth:
I was so stressed/ ticked when the fridge died I don't think my DH was questionning our upcoming trip one bit! He knew I needed a bit of Pixie dust.

Just wanted to throw this out--if you can afford to pay cash, check and see if you have a Sears Outlet near you. They have scratch and dents, returns, etc. at discounted prices. We got a great Kenmore refrigerator there that had a couple small dents on the side (where you don't see it) and a couple cracked plastic pieces that cost $20 to replace. We saved over $500 and haven't had a single problem with it.

You know what...we are now entering the 17th year of using our GE side-by-side with ice/water dispensers and a (it was available then) milk/juice shelf accessible from the outside of the fridge without opening the whole refrigerator door (saved us a bundle over the years). Never had even one service call. Sometimes I think it is luck of the draw...because in that same timeframe we are now on our 3rd dishwasher, debating a fourth...and we are not that hard on dishwashers!!!

...sorry for the vent, not forseen :) ...and that being said, I agree with kfeur, "scratch and dent" appliances, providing that the dents are merely cosmetic and have not been caused by too traumatic an event...can be a great bargain. Sears is not the only store that offers this...you might even check out some local (ie not chain) appliance stores.

don't buy too much fridge, remember to buy what you need vs what you want and you won't pay much for a fridge. My DM has a beautiful HUGE stainless steel fridge that she spent so much for that she won't tell me. I bought a base model and I am more than happy with it, especially since we paid about $350 for it in cash! I just don't keep all of the junk in it anymore and it gets cleaned out more regularly now, 'cause I can't use it for storage (ie science experiments :rotfl2: )

Also, I agree with other posters about craigslist and scratch and dents too - great deals - it's just a fridge as long as it keep food at the appropriate temperature, who cares! It's about life not stuff!

I'll finish with this - ENJOY the trip! ;)

Do you have a Sears outlet near you? I've bought most of my major appliances at the our outlet store and they'll honor the 0% too! The warranties are honored also. My last dryer was noisy-they came out under warranty and replaced some parts, it works great, I saved $$, and the repair was free. Just a thought. Good luck.

I'm not sure, I've never heard of a sears outlet before???? Dh was talking last night...he wants the kind that has the freezer on the bottom and the double doors for the fridge on the top and get the extended warranty...anyone have one of these?

Extended Warranties are a HUGE moneymaker for the stores and a LOUSY deal for the customers. Don't do it. If an appliance is defective, you'll know soon enough while the original warranty is still valid. It is a waste of money to pay for an extended warranty. Better to keep that money in your savings account and use it in the event that a repair is needed.

If you insist on getting a warranty, don't by it from the retailer. Search on line and you can find outside companies that sell warranties for much better rates. Warrantybynet.com is a big one and there are others. That way the store doesn't get a cut so the rates are lower.
