We just returned on Friday after a wonderful two week trip to California, one week of which was spent in Anaheim (we stayed at the Element by Westin--loved it). I just wanted to share our Disneyland dining experiences. We did character meals, the WOC dessert party, Fantasmic dining package (regular--RBT), lunch at BB, some CS and ended with a special meal at Napa Rose.

Character Meals
On our arrival night we had dinner at Goofy's Kitchen. The food was quite good for a buffet (though not worth the high price tag IMHO $50+ pp-- especially since our DD 10, who eats like a bird, is now a Disney adult--really wish that would start at 12, but I digress lol). The variety of food was decent though I do think they have scaled back since we last ate here (mind you that was many years ago so not surprised) and we did have great service. What the meal really lacked was the character interaction. I had read previous reviews so I was aware it wasn't like as before pre-pandemic, I just don't get why not as everywhere else --Storytellers and in the parks, characters would sign autographs, hug and pose for pictures. Other than the arrival interaction (he did sign, hug and pose) and picture with Goofy, all the other characters did was prance around every so often but didn't even stop to pose at tables so we were not able to get any decent pics (mind you dh and I are not the most skilled photographers lol). Overall, we still had a good time and it was a fun way to start off the Disney magic.

Storyteller's Brunch
We did this on the Sunday of our DCA day (08/14) and this for me, honestly was the most disappointing meal of our trip, food wise. I had read a number of positive reviews and had watched videos--but I found the food really underwhelming and limited (again especially for the price tag). There are no longer the served extras like crab cakes, avocado toast, truffle fries etc.. (which I was really looking forward to), not sure when they were taken off the menu but the served offerings according to our server (though he didn't seem to have any knowledge about the past offerings) now consisted of kid's options like chicken tenders, fries, grilled cheese, cheeseburger sliders, and beignet bites (which were more like little jam filled donut holes-- a little greasy but these were yummy). For a brunch there was mostly just breakfast food: sausages, bacon, scrambled eggs, omelettes, eggs benedict, breakfast potatoes, pancakes, Mickey Waffles etc. but there really wasn't much in terms of lunch fare (or dessert now that I think about it) : some carved meat, a nachos dish , a salmon dish and a few salads- these lunch items were often empty / near empty (and they were slow to replenish most items in the buffet). The layout of the buffet was also awkward and crowded with the line up for the omelette station spilling over into the other sections of the buffet. Food tasted fine just wasn't the high quality I'd been expecting and non breakfast items were harder to come by. The character interaction seemed disorganized, characters kept coming back to the same areas they'd already been and took FOREVER (over an 1 1/2 for 4 characters Chip & Dale, Mickey & Minnie) to get through all sections of the restaurant. However, once characters did arrive they spent some time interacting and did sign autographs and posed for pictures which we were happy about. Service was just ok.

Blue Bayou
We had lunch (not Fantasmic) here on our first DL day and this was the surprise hit of our trip. I was going more for ambiance and experience having never been (which definitely delivered) than food but was pleasantly surprised at the quality. I wasn't expecting much since the menu items didn't really excite me but everything was fresh and delicious. I had the gumbo and the heirloom tomato and watermelon salad (both very good) and also snagged a piece of my DD's Monte Cristo (YUM!). DH had the sustainable fish which was ahi tuna which he really enjoyed. We were stuffed from our meals so didn't have dessert. Service here was great.

WOC Dessert Party
We were booked for the 2nd show. Check in was pretty painless (checked in around 9) and we were brought to our table around 9:30. Seemed like tables were already assigned as we weren't asked about seating but were happy with our seats which was table 7, a low table right by the railing (we had a perfect view). Our server was prompt and super friendly taking our drink orders right away. DH got the sparkling wine, I got the tequila based drink (which a light weight like me found a bit strong lol so I diluted it a bit with the cherry fiz) and our DD was super excited to get her drink in the glowing ball cup. We also were give a bunch of mini water bottles. The desserts were meh but fine overall and I did enjoy the crackers and cheese and sweet crunchy grapes more (though additional crackers were needed for all the cheese). We had tons leftover and were given boxes to take it all back to our hotel. Prior to booking I found the $84 pp price tag a bit hard to swallow but after watching the parade and fireworks in DL a couple nights before in a sea of humanity (and the fun part of having someone try to squeeze their kiddo in and push my DD aside 2 min before start after we'd been there for over an hour--grr). After that experience I was more than happy to shell out the money for seats, desserts+ and alcohol to boot lol. In all we loved it!

River Belle Terrace Fantasmic (Regular) Package
We had lunch here on our 2nd DL day and opted for seats to the first showing. The portions were large and plentiful, 3 courses was a lot and I felt like we wasted a lot of food here as quality was just ok. DH and I had the salad which was barely dressed (mmm leaves lol) and DD had the red beans and rice appetizer which she had only a few bites of (she's quite picky--though I had a bite and it was tasty). For our mains, DH had the burnt ends grilled cheese, I had the brisket mac and cheese and DD had the fried chicken sandwich--everything was fine but nothing to write home about. We had the chocolate dome dessert which looked better than it tasted lol. We had a few different servers here but service was great overall. People started lining up for Fantasmic an hour and 1/2 before the show which was kind of a pain but we were tired so just bought some cotton candy and a Mickey ice cream sandwich and joined the line. We were let into our section a little after 8 pm and we got a spot right up by the railing. It was a little uncomfortable sitting so long (we brought a towel) but we had an amazing view of the show so I'd say it was worth it.

Counter Service
Most of our dinners in the parks were CS: Pizza Planet, Bengal BBQ (which I remember being better) and Flo's V8 Cafe which were more convenience of where we were in the park at the time rather than planning. Nothing was terrible but not memorable either-- but hey it's theme park food. Some notable snacks--we did enjoy-- one of the new Dole Whip flavours watermelon / mango swirl --very refreshing (along with original pineapple). And the Jack, Jack Giant Chocolate Chip cookie Num Num was delish too!

Napa Rose
This was our last meal of our trip and a birthday celebration for DH. Food and service were exceptional. I had the Vintner's 4 course tasting menu which consisted of sea breem with aromatics, roasted duck breast with champagne grapes, shrimp in a butter sauce with asparagus and a fig tart with goat cheese ice cream for dessert. Each course was scrumptious and exquisitely presented. I didn't do the wine flight pairing as I mentioned before I am more of a lightweight though I did enjoy the Napa Passion Cocktail and a glass of wine. DH opted for the a la carte menu and chose the diver scallop appetizer, salmon main course with strawberries and pistachios and the peach celebration for dessert. Though he found the food excellent he did find that the portions were not enough for him, for me it was satisfying but I had an extra course. They allowed our DD to order off kid's menu even though she was 10, our server joked with her that she was magically nine for the evening. She chose the petite fillet which arrived perfectly cooked and she ate every bite which is a feat for her. This was definitely a splurge especially for us once converted into Canadian dollars but a lovely experience-- no regrets here and perfect way to end the last evening of our trip.

I know this a long post but I just wanted to share and detail our Disneyland dining experiences as I appreciated reading others. Hopefully I can help others with their planning and I'd be happy to answer any questions.

Edited to add we used mobile order for CS which worked great except for Flo's which for some reason was super slow and was ready well past our window. For our ADR's we checked into all a little early and were seated promptly (except Napa Rose where we had to wait for valet parking and were 5 minutes late but again were seated immediately).

Thank you for the report! I love hearing about people's experiences. I was planning on the Storytellers brunch but will hold off on that if they aren't offering the extras like crab cakes. I'm so glad you guys had a great time!

I so appreciate this. We have goofy kitchen, storytellers brunch, blue bayou.. all booked as well. They haven’t released the blue bayou fantastic for our dates yet so I’m also holding a River bell lunch reservation just in case.

I agree about goofy’s kitchen in that I’m still so disappointed that the characters dont stop.

Oh man. When did they stop serving the truffle fries? I know I saw them on the menu pretty recently. We have reservations the beginning of October and that is a little disappointing.

What is your recommendation on WOC Dessert Party? We have a second showing and people on the board are saying to check in at 7:00 PM.

I also swear I saw them on the menu just before we went and had watched recent videos about the other served items so I was really bummed when I found out all the exciting served menu options were gone.

We checked in before the first show started just before 9 (8:55 pm) and there were just a few people wearing wristbands at that point milling around the check in station. We were given our wristbands and told to come back to the podium at 9:15. We found a bench not too far away and sat down and waited until 9:15 when we saw that a huge line had formed so we got in line, at that point I was a little worried we were not going to have good seats because of how far down the line we were. I guess the seats are assigned at check in and even though it was a fairly busy Sunday in Aug (14th) we still got good seats right by the railing. To me it doesn't seem like there are any "bad" seats but others may be able to chime in here, also not sure how busy October is but checking in during the first show seems like overkill but again others may know better as this was our first time doing the WOC party.

That is really disappointing to hear about Storyteller's. Is it really worth going for Brunch if it's pretty much breakfast items now? I had a really fun experience a few months ago, and was planning a return trip, guess I won't be returning.
I recently tried dinner at Storyteller's and it was very mediocre and the food wasn't impressive, so thanks for the update on Brunch, how sad.

What I think Goofy's Kitchen is trying to do with this new image of character interactions now is that they are experimenting with something new and fresh to keep the fun going. Because when I first ate at Goofy's Kitchen when my family went to Disneyland at Christmas 1998 it was a wholesome experience and we kept going there as a tradition during Disneyland trips from 2001-2004. Because it was the best place to see familiar characters and the Fab Five in one chance and having the kids dance the Macarena along with the characters was so much fun. But if I ran Goofy's Kitchen I would return it to the way it always had been because having the characters sign autographs pose for a hug or two a picture and interaction were such a treat. But I do agree that Goofy's Kitchen is very overpriced for what little you get now and for $50 you should get characters to interact with you and sign autographs and give a hug and picture not just have the characters walk from table to table and wave to you instead of stopping by each table for interactions and hugs. And Goofy's Kitchen should've let all the characters hug and sign autographs and pose for pictures instead of Goofy the only character there for posing for pictures and autographs and a hug or two. And they should at least have a variety of characters appear at Goofy's Kitchen as well not just The Fab Five. Because Goofy's Kitchen used to focus on a variety of characters that would appear at breakfast and dinner such as Snow White Aladdin and Jasmine Baloo Alice In Wonderland and The Mad Hatter and other characters but since those characters stopped appearing at Goofy's Kitchen the restaurant started to go downhill. Storyteller's Grill I always thought was the best restaurant of Disneyland but I always wished they added more characters to see there because it's always focused on Chip And Dale and Mickey And Minnie and they should add more characters besides those four. But I think what you might've experienced there was probably due to character actor shortages which is probably why Storyteller's Grill had the same four characters during your dining experience there but at least character interaction and autographs hasn't disappeared from there unlike Goofy's Kitchen has done now
Great input on your dining experience Shaycamp21,

What a wonderful write up! That's disappointing about Goofy's, and even more so about Storytellers. I had thought about both of these for either this upcoming October trip or our New Year's trip. If they're not great, I'm glad to know because I would rather go elsewhere that we do enjoy.

Yay for Blue Bayou! We always have such a wonderful time there. I'm excited for the filet mignon!

And also yay for WOC dessert party! This is something I think we want to do. We weren't that impressed with WOC when we went many years ago (it's not Fantasmic level), but maybe we'll give it another shot. By the way - I feel you on the people pushing 2 minutes before. That literally just happened at fireworks the weekend prior to last. We had waited for so long and two different sets of families shoved their way into the front. One of them put their kid under the rope and said he would come back for him at the end of the show...what looked to be about a 5 year old... People, I tell you!

Since you mentioned you didn't love WOC the first time and have both October and New Years trips, I'd suggest doing the WOC dessert party on your NY trip. The holiday version of WOC, Season of Light, (which they did announce will be back this holiday season) is my absolute favorite and the dessert party would make it even better :)

SOLD! We wouldn't have been able to make it work for October because that trip is pretty packed, but sounds like a must-do for December. :)

I'm surprised to read that Bengal BBQ wasn't good for you. It has been consistently great for us and very recently too. (I could literally eat that pork belly skewer for 3 meals a day.) Maybe you were there on an off day or we just have different tastes.

I think at this point Brunch is not worth it if all they are serving are mostly breakfast options (breakfast is a little less expensive though I wouldn't waste precious park time doing breakfast-- since the characters take so long to greet everyone, it would be better on a non park day. It seems as though they just implemented these changes so maybe they will re-introduce more lunch options into the buffet-- I would wait and see before booking again.

I am not sure it's really a new concept per se as at Chef Mickey's in WDW the characters would also dance around every so often and everyone would join in and wave their napkins. However the characters would still stop by each table to sign autographs and for photo ops. Though I haven't been since before covid so not sure what it's like now. Also when we were at Aulani (again pre-covid) at the character meal there they had the all kids join the characters and dance around the room with them and still do the table meet and greets.
They did say that they would be bringing this back at Goofy's but not sure why they haven't as other places in DL are functioning normally.

I agree there should be more variety of characters. The last time we went to Goofy's Kitchen with our older daughters in 2008 the characters were more plentiful and varied: Goofy, Pluto, Fairy Godmother, Baloo, Pinocchio, Gideon and Jasmine were there. I know we are just coming off a pandemic but I don't get why all of the character meals are limited to the fab 5 (if lucky) and Chip and Dale.

Yes unfortunately it was disappointing. We had the beef skewers which though tasty, were tough and chewy (& full of gristle) also the portions were a lot smaller than before. Don't know if it was an off day or because it was later in the evening (we had them after the fireworks).

We avoided table service on our last trip because all of our usual locations (Blue Bayou, River Belle, Carnation) have been underwhelming lately and overpriced. On our last trip, we had our traditional Storyteller's dinner. It was good. Last week we ate mostly at quick service for four days and were quite happy with the trip. it was nice not having a tied down schedule to a restaurant reservation. Half of the time we are not hungry yet.

So bummed about your Storytellers experience. They seemingly JUST changed the menu. We literally ate here July 31 and ordered the crab cakes, Avocado toast, and chicken and biscuits extras. The Avocado toast was pathetic, but the others were great. I also mostly ate NON breakfast items. I had a lot of the carved beef, the green bean salad, the potatoes, etc. I did enjoy the French toast and sausage and fresh fruit as well. But the spread of breakfast to lunch food was about 50/50. That's too bad they have changed it.

Glad you enjoyed Napa Rose! It's always top notch over there.

That is really too bad about Storytellers. We really enjoyed the small plates at brunch. Pretty lame and now "brunch" sounds like mostly like breakfast really.

Thanks for the detailed review! I loved WOC dessert party and will do it again for sure. I'm surprised the Storytellers brunch wasn't better. I've always wanted to try that.

I was disappointed by Storytellers on our last trip too. We only had dinner but the items offered were not great. Plus they had no offerings for kids. None. We asked the waiter and he gave us the menu we could order from but it was just the regular items like burgers, tenders, fries, and pasta. It is stuff she likes but she had to wait for it to be served while we already had our plates. We have eaten at Storytellers for dinner a few times and had brunch there a couple of times too, but this time just was not like the others. We had always liked brunch there because DD wanted bacon and waffles and DH wanted actual food. I think we will stick with Goofys next time.

As a local, Storytellers dinner buffet is a go to of mine. Food is excellent, price is lower due to no characters. Not a ton of selections but everything is quality and you can also order burgers, chicken tenders, fries , soup, grilled cheese with the server thats not on the buffet line, all included.
On a side note, I never understood people that said Disneyland food is better then Disneyworld. Disneyworld has so many more options and amazing choices, its on a whole other level.

The *quality* of food is better at Disneyland and the quick service places have WAY more variety and better options than WDW. It's like pulling teeth at WDW to get a decent salad with FRESH produce from a QS place or just some quality fresh fruit. The sit down options in Disneyland Park are sub par for sure, but they are better over at DCA and at Downtown Disney/Grand Californian.

I will take DL quick service any day over WDW. Everything at WDW feels overly processed and low quality.

The quick service at Epcot alone beats Disneyland resorts. Yorkshire county fish and chips are amazing. The best I’ve had ANYWHERE, not just in a theme park. The skewers in Morocco. The pastries in France. The Connections cafe in future world makes EVERYTHING from scratch. sunshine Seasons salmon in out of this world.
The beignets at port Orleans put Disneyland’s flat beignets to shame. Primo Piatto at the Riviera is unbelievably authentic and fresh compared to most things in all of Disneyland resort. I could go on and on.

Disneyland has soup bread bowls going for it’s quick service though. They also used to have Amazing baked potatoes in Trabadour Tavern but changed it to disgusting sweet potatoes. Disneyland has alot of gimmicky social media attention seeker desserts.
