I love WDW transportation.
You don't have to worry about anything, other than when you bus is going to show up, and how long the line is.
You can basically sleep on the bus ride back, in public xD
Annnd, you feel like you're in a moving vehicle for weeks afterwards, from the bus stopping and starting.
Once, we were coming back from a late ADR at Ohana's, and Magic Kingdom was closed. So we had to wait for a DTD bus, then at DTD we had to wait for an AKL bus. The whole thing took about 2 hours.

The next week, we stayed at Disney for a few days, did the cruise, and did a few more days at Disney.
Personally, I could care less if we stayed onsite or not. As long as we're done there. Like you said, alls the hotel is good for is showering, dressing, and sleeping.
